Hey guys quick question: Why are seasons 1-4 of the modern Dr.Who not available in HD?
Hey guys quick question: Why are seasons 1-4 of the modern Dr.Who not available in HD?
Doctor Who began filming / broadcasting in HD for the 2009 specials (Planet of The Dead), onwards :) Series 5 was the first series.
I understand that, but why? The technology was clearly there for them to record in HD.
I'd assume the budget. But I have no idea.
HD television wasn't in as high demand when the show was revived (which affected the decision, financially) - as did the upgrades to the sets and special effects. For 2009, they didn't have to film as much, the demand was much greater, and it had worked well for Torchwood - so they made the switch. Which all came together with a nice budget which made Series 5 look very pretty. ...and then the budget was slashed. *** The Telegraph Preview
This series, it’s widely agreed, has been patchy. However, it’s come good at the right time and returned to form over the past fortnight with Mark Gatiss’s The Crimson Horror and Neil Gaiman’s Nightmare In Silver. Written by Moffat himself, this finale tops the lot. It’s momentous, emotional, funny in flashes and packed full of ideas.
Link
I understand that, but why? The technology was clearly there for them to record in HD.
I guess it's like how they kept the original series in black and white until 1970. Yes, colour television existed and they could have filmed it in colour, but people who actually owned colour TVs were few and far between so they decided there wasn't much point. [editline]17th May 2013[/editline]
packed full of ideas.
This doesn't exactly sound good. I really, really hope they've not tried to cram too much into the 45 minutes they have. At least with the Series 6 finale, all the setup was done at the end of the previous episode (The Doctor going to Lake Silencio, River being put in the spacesuit, etc.). With this one there's no prior buildup to the episode so imo it's going to be pretty busy.
The irony, though, is that The Name Of The Doctor has a lot of story to tell, with a lot of characters, and yet it all seems to fit (at least so far). Steven Moffat's writing, when firing on all cylinders, juggles an ensemble particularly well (just go and take a look back at Coupling for plenty of evidence of that), and that's certainly the case here. Perhaps the most interesting thing we found about the 40 minutes of The Name Of The Doctor that we saw was its willingness to answer questions. Furthermore, its willingness to answer questions without over confusing things. There had been criticisms in particular of last series' finale, The Wedding Of River Song, that it had been tricky to follow. The Name Of The Doctor, structurally, is more straightforward in that regard, although no less ambitious. It feels - again appreciating that we've not seen every minute of it - a more rounded, more satisfying and strong series finale. Crucially, it also feels like a more accessible one. Well, tomorrow's the day, guys. Are you ready? [editline]17th May 2013[/editline] [t]http://25.media.tumblr.com/88c995976bf3609d8fc08eff3343e657/tumblr_mmwwnozDi51rf8lpbo1_500.png[/t]
RE:
Daily Mail is out with another Who scare piece.
Live viewers are down for a few weeks - oh dear. What will we do? I know! Sack the showrunner who can't run the show. Sack the writers who can't write. Sack the cast who can't act! Destroy the sets for not being fan-pleasing enough. Cancel all 50th celebrations for not being as spectacular as they should be. Take iPlayer offline because it's not accurate enough. End all VoD services because if you're not watching live, you're not a true fan. Have all modern Who DVDs destroyed because their content doesn't live up with what was delivered back in't day. Protest outside BBC offices and studios across the country for conspiring to mislead viewers of the broadcasting schedule. Cease broadcasts around the world for daring to broadcast a television show that was made in the UK - because only we're allowed to watch it and get any and all exclusive content! Take down all discussion boards because there's no longer anything to discuss other than how terrible everything is. Hijack the DWO twitter feed to prevent further massive bouts of unacceptable hype for embargoed material. Stop all production of promotional material and merchandise so that potential new viewers aren't drawn in and forced to sit through such drivel. Erase the last eight years from our memories. Then, and only then, will the Daily fucking Mail be satisfied by the level of Who content available in the world. Off the air. A fading relic. Non-existent in civilisation today and freed from the PC lefty-propaganda agenda established by Russell T. Davies and Steven Moffat. Or we could all just get on with it and enjoy the ever-increasing convenience of iPlayer and VoD to watch one the BBC's most popular shows around the world without sending the Doctor Who world in to a blind panic for the sake of Internet traffic. It's not like Series 7 was the second most watched series of Modern Who up until two episodes ago! So Daily Mail is basically the UK equivilant of Fox News I guess? I don't know much about them I just know from word of mouth and the pilot of Sherlock that they're obviously no good.
I'm going to go collapse somewhere.
Yeah I think you need to lie down

Us Aussies didn't get it until 1975.
So Daily Mail is basically the UK equivilant of Fox News I guess? I don't know much about them I just know from word of mouth and the pilot of Sherlock that they're obviously no good.
Daily Mail is racist, xenophobic, sexist, right wing, arrogant, and sensationalist headlines wrapped around what is essentially an opinion piece. Nobody takes it seriously or ever will. For that reason Grizz, I really wouldn't worry. The Daily Mail is one of the papers caught in this horrible scandal where the journalists were sifting through peoples rubbish, and hacking their emails, and tapping there phones. There's no real law against it. It wasn't just celebrities but other people in the public eye, such as government ministers, and the parents of dead and missing children. The Daily Mail journalists explained on TV they have done nothing wrong to the face of the victims. That all this information was in "public interest". Bullshit. Who Steve Coogan is dating is hardly in the public interest.
The Sun, having confirmed 100% absolutely definitely that Matt Smith won't be back next year - have chosen to report the opposite now.
“I’m on a break for a couple of months while I’m in Detroit making How To Catch A Monster,” explains Matt. “We come back and shoot the Christmas special over the summer, then we go on to the next series, which will either start filming at the end of this year or at the start of 2014.”
Didn't Matt confirm he was doing series 8 in the Radio Times in March? The Radio Times is pretty closely linked with the BBC, I don't think they'd get it wrong.
The Daily Mail The Sun The Daily Star [editline]17th May 2013[/editline]
Didn't Matt confirm he was doing series 8 in the Radio Times in March? Radio Times published it later, it was picked up on the web even later.
I'm kind of indifferent as to when Matt leaves. If he goes at the end of this year I'll be happy as he'll have quit at the top of his game so it won't feel like he left because his portrayal stagnated. On the other hand, if he leaves at the end of next year I'll be happy as he's a good actor who plays the role very well.
The Moment of Moments 100% Confirmed.
Read the last two minutes and what happens. Amazing. I'm not going to post it. You guys will have to wait and you'll only moan I spoiled it ;) A lot of people didn't like the rumour and speculation when it first hit (me included). But from what I've read, you'll soon change your minds. It's well written. Well executed. And is a MASSIVE teaser for what is to come. It also solves a lot of plot holes this leak originally implied. Moffat is a genius writer, when he hits the mark he really hits it. [editline]17th May 2013[/editline] Haha, just read from a good leaker that the Zygons were written into the 50th just to make David Tennant super happy and so they knew he wouldn't be able to possibly resist (David's favourite enemy from his childhood is the Zygons). Ohhh David.
most excited I have been about an episode of Who since The Sound of Drums!
Well, now I'm excited.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J-G7XG2l6C4 me waiting for tomorrow
But is it The Moment of Moments, Dan? Anything less and I'll start writing for DM.
It's all about occupying your time with the things that matter, like watching an LP or seeing the Mythbusters devise a meal for astronauts or ganking Drow before she can get farmed.
The Moment?!
The one true Moment of Moments!
The Doctor is going to use the moment and erase the entire Doctor Who canon, as well as himself from living memory allowing River, Clara, Jenny, Vastra and Strax to save the world together in the new series: "The Impossible Girl and The Veiled Detective in the Thrilling Tale of Steven Moffat's Wet-dream"
