The Stolen Earth :v:
If I had to guess the reason why Mathieson's episodes were so good it's because he actually let Moffat help him. Obviously not all the credit can go to Moffat but iirc Mathieson even said it himself on his blog that the episodes wouldn't have been nearly as good as they were if Moffat hadn't have helped.
I'd suspect that's why this episode's writing wasn't as good as the others. I'd make a guess that Boyce really didn't want Moffat helping him (as some writers do) as he probably considers himself a great writer - which he is, but writing for Doctor Who is unlike the majority of other writing.
You either accept the show runner's help and produce a great episode or fight them and have a higher chance at a worse one.
Here's some real speculation: I believe that Moffat probably helped Gaiman quite a lot on the Doctor's Wife. In fact I think he basically wrote the episode (with Gaiman not even saying thank you like Mathieson) and yet got little credit for it. I think that when Gaiman came back to do Nightmare in Silver there was a small part of Moffat that didn't want to help him as much because otherwise there was a chance the same thing would happen again.
Obviously this is just speculation but I wouldn't be surprised if this is actually how it happened.
EDIT: This is also why I don't think Mathieson is a suitable show runner (yet). When Moffat was praised for his scripts they were ALL his. RTD said it himself that the only scripts he didn't have to edit were Moffat's. With Mathieson Moffat is still editing the scripts.
Well Danny just flashed a torch in a tiger's eyes. Surprisingly effective and totally not something that'd probably cause you to lose an arm.

My cat gets pissed off at me even if I turn on my night light. Danny would be dead.
No he wouldn't. Haven't you seen him backflip? Tiger wouldn't have a chance.
If the forest wasn't there Danny would've just backflipped over the solar flare.

If the forest wasn't there Danny would've just backflipped over the solar flare.
Now I'm just imagining a tiger running at Danny - Danny backflipping over the tiger - then the tiger just keeps running and eats all of the children that Danny just backflipped away from.
Danny then turns round and says 'that's what u get 4 not bein' a soldier' then backflips away.
Never seen again.
All whilst the "DUN DUN DUNDUN DUN DUN DUHDUH!" music is playing
It does concern me that nobody seems up for the challenge of Moffat's role. I honestly believe that more than one person will be at the helm for the next 'era.'
I've said it before and I'll say it again. I believe that there's a real chance RTD comes back.
Moffat has really redeemed himself with s8. Everything has been pretty quality, best series since 5.

The only thing saving it is Capaldi, I wouldn't bother watching it otherwise.
I'm probably late to the party here, but it's some form of irony that John Hurt was cast as the regeneration the proceeding Doctors declared an Unperson.
We often have wild thoughts of fantasy on what things would've been like if 9 was in Hurt's place in the 50th. How much cooler it would've been.
But let's for a minute imagine Eccleston was never cast and Hurt was the Series 1 Doctor.
Hurt would've stayed for more than one series probably, possibly meaning David Tennant would never have been cast and then we are just lead to a completely different reality where almost anything could have happened.
Imagine the kissing scene between Hurt and Rose.
Hurt and Jack.

I remember getting one of these capatchas on tinypic saying "river song" :v:
what if right
claras line "i dont want to be the last of my species" or w/e
the finale, where something happens with the timelines via missy or something, the doctor isnt there to stop the cybermen
the human race have become cybermen except clara
boom.
& except Osgood, of course - for when she takes over as companion. Because asthmatic geeks can fight monsters, too.

It's a shame UNIT are gonna fuck the Doctor over in the next ep.
I'm 2 minutes into the new episode and I'm not sure what to think... The directing feels... very weird. And the dialogue is even stranger. It feels like every line is taken out of an 18th century novel.
Not sure what to think.

you can't have an opinion after two minutes, why are you posting when you haven't even seen the whole thing yet

Eh, it was just the way it felt very different just from the get-go, it's evening out but still feels odd even 15 minutes in.

come back in half an hour and then you can tell me what you think
again, 15 minutes is not the whole episode

I really liked the long following shot around the Tardis. Feels like ages since some original way of shooting in Doctor Who.

The TARDIS scenes have all been superb all series. Every director has tried something new in there. Loved the pan from the console to the spinning things in Ep3 :v:
Truth be told, I miss the style of shooting they had for series 1 through 5. It had a better feel to it. Nowadays the directors are constantly trying to get as arty a shot as possible - which is fantastic from a directorial standpoint, but it distracts me too much from the story sometimes.
[sp]Except Freeze Sr who is awesome don't kill me please[/sp]
Alright, finished the episode. Still think it had some very weird directing choices. There was an extreme overuse of wide-angle lenses. Dialogue still felt very off and the child actors didn't help. Not too entertained by the story either. Definetely one of the weaker episodes of this series.
But hey, at least the finale looks promising!
the only thing i noticed was off with the direction was when red girls mum went into the living room, the way that was filmed was reaaaaaally off. The complete lack of music was weird too, cause im used to the soundmixing on Doctor Who shoving the soundtrack down my throat (from s6 onwards anyway)
