How is an agile and durable alien mech that shoots laser beams not threatening? Because they look like a bunch of trashcans with plungers? Yeah, actually, that could be it. But that doesn't change the fact that they shoot laser beams.
They've been made much more menacing since the revival but in the classic series they were a joke, usually being defeated by being spun around and pushed down holes and until Remembrance of the Daleks, stairs.
True; I would indeed like to see the dark age of eldritch sorcery that preceded the Doctor's universe. Perhaps the origins of the Weeping Angels is like (WMG, YMMV, but still probably SP) [sp]their minds survived the death of the pre-verse and birth of the Whoniverse, and incarnated as beings of living stone in said Whoniverse. The sorceries wielded by the Weeping Angels included the power of time displacement, and gathering the chaotic energies of "lives never lived" when their victims died in their new timestream, with said energies allowing the Weeping Angels to perform the powerful reality-warping sorceries that they brought over from the pre-verse.[/sp] [sp]However when the laws of science were underpinned by the Time Lords, a "curse" of quantum-locking befell the Weeping Angels, causing them to be immobile when observed, and the chaotic energies that once allowed them to perform powerful feats of sorcery were now the only thing that would prevent them from falling into permanent dormancy; thus rather than remain as stone sorcerers,[/sp] they had to become lonely assassins, and in many ways loneliness shattered much of their social structure and sanity. Imagine your gaze forcing your friends to turn to stone, imagine never being able to look your wife in the eyes without both of you being frozen as fossils in time; imagine if whenever you are observed, you completely black out, only to be jolted back to consciousness when they look away. Imagine how frustrating, horrifying and disorientating that would be to experience on a daily basis. Imagine how you would HATE people for doing that to you, and the general contempt for life that would fill your every waking moment. Imagine how sad you'd feel when you acknowledge the fact that there is no way for you to escape this horrific fate, one you have been assigned for all of eternity. Imagine how you would want to scream, but cannot because your face and vocal chords are frozen solid due to some ginger ape gawping in terror at your twisted beauty. Maybe that's why the Angels weep? Also, on a tangentially-related note, maybe that's why SCP-173 wants to kill everybody?
Oooh it's so wonderful speculating on that part of Who. The pre-verse is an arc I want to see more than anything else. The Doctor exploring ancient mysteries from before the dawn of time itself. Something he knows nothing about.
How do you even get to the pre-verse?
Explosive time travel. Maybe modifications to the TARDIS.
Tube from King's Cross St. Pancras
um, what?
The same way pre-verse sentients got to the Whoniverse. Only backwards.
That was indeed the moment of moments. What a lovely woman. Still looked super fresh after God knows how many people and taking time to compliment all the cosplayers. Very smiley & friendly.
I recently found a Doctor Who Survival Guide in my house, it is about the daleks and ways to survive when they invade and it shows all the different types. I think I am ready to survive a Dalek Invasion.

Anybody who didn't come is missing out. Downside of the day: jeans ripped and had to buy new ones. They had a massive hole and that would be inappropriate for a photo shot. Also it's impossible to move. Simply too busy. Gonna visit the stalls round 3ish. After my Jenna shoot, hopefully it'll be calmer and easier to navigate.
I've just found something on Reddit that not only makes the Cybermen 100x scarier, but actually kinda makes me sympathize with them this is from /r/gallifrey, which is actually better than /r/doctorwho because a lot of the conversation centers around Classic Who as well as NewWho
For me, it has nothing to do with the singsong (or the mono-tonal) voices. It's not that the old ones didn't walk around saying "Delete, Delete" either, though I know that grates on some. It's the way that the original Cybermen - as a whole culture - replaced their body parts bit by bit. It wasn't one psychopath deciding to convert everyone like it was it is in the reboot; it was everyone willingly converting themselves, piecemeal fashion over an extended period, to extend their lives. It's quite chilling and it's easy to see the same happening to us. Imagine this. You are getting old, but medical technology is advancing at an incredible rate. First your hip fails, but that is easily replaced. Then your knees, and then your elbows. All simple body parts - you are still most definitely "you". A little while later, you replace a few more parts - a bionic ear, new lenses for your eyes and new teeth. But really, it's all just bits and bobs. It probably disturbs you a little that these parts are all that will remain in your coffin after your body rots away, but "Wow!"- you can see, hear and chew properly again. Then a big one. You get a synthetic heart. It's a little sobering, but in the end, it's just a muscle isnt it? No emotions are held in your heart. Not really. Okay, your blood doesn't pump faster in quite the same way when you get excited, but you are still "You". You still think the way you did, and for the most part still 'feel' the same. That's all that matters. This process goes on, bit by bit, and the years of extra life turn to decades. Organs are replaced, one by one, until there are only a few left in your body. If you are honest to yourself, emotions are odd now. It's surprising how much of how you feel things is actually tied into your organs, nerves and endocrine system. And skin, too (replacing that was very odd). But your brain is intact. You are still "you". And so are your friends and family, even if they look a little different now. Then you have a stroke. It destroys part of your brain, and it's very close to 'all over red rover'. Luckily, though, nanotechnology has advanced so far now that the function of the part of the brain you have lost can be replicated by micro-machinery and circuitry. A bit of your brain is replaced, but you are still "you". You haven't died yet. You are still alive. Over the next few years, more and more of your brain dies and is replaced. Each time you check to see if you still "feel the same". Are you the same person? Or did you die somewhere along they way? And each time you think - I am pretty much the same as I was before. Hardly changed at all, really. The day comes when a century has passed since that first hip replacement. Almost all of you has been replaced. You are 5% organic, 95% machine. Your remaining brain is closer to the size of a cat's than a human's but the important stuff is still there. It must be - you still feel like "you". Admittedly, it's hard to compare the current "you" to you as you were when you were still a full human, but you have no doubt that version 78.0 feels almost exactly the same as 77.88. And the bits that do feel different are frankly an improvement: OS 77 wasted a lot of process time "feeling" things that didn't really matter to you any more. If one thing still makes you feel excited though, it's OS 80.0. It's going to be so much more efficient. You will even be able to dual boot when the organic matter isn't operating fast enough... TL:DR Becoming a cyberman is a slippery slope into dehumanization. People aren't brainwashed to go to conversion chambers. They go of their own free will. Anything to stay alive. And that is what makes it scary.
Oh that's pretty dark.
um, what?
Congratulations on being the 1963rd post! If that's not a milestone in a Doctor Who thread, it should be, same with the 2005th
Oh yeah I totally forgot that the post limit was raised again

Wait what is this, is Jenna doing autographs somewhere or something?
Had to get her for 11 for John-Rhys Davies later :v: Wonderful man, tickles all round.
He tickled me and started laughing when I laughed. He said I had nice hair. He was lovely. If Jenna wasn't tired earlier she was by now. She looks really forced in the pictures and didn't speak much. I asked her of we could do scared poses and she said yeah but then didn't do one while I did. Result: the most awkward picture I've seen in my life. Ohh wel still got to meet her. But Larem was way more fun and energetic.
I found this article rather interesting. It's some behind the scenes stuff from Stargate Studios (the fx studio that does some of Doctor Who's special effects).
I meant Karen btw. Typing on a phone is hard.
Wish I went now, but I didn't want to hang around Milton Keynes by myself all day. EDIT: ok I will go to whatever convention is next with anyone doctor who related, I need to start doing that shit. It sounds fun.

Mission accomplished. Sounds like getting the photo at 11 was the right decision :v: I actually enjoyed the infinite queue around the stadium. In between the cosplayers, the dealers and the DW soundtrack on the speakers - it was a pretty cool atmosphere.

Another culture might do what you suggested.

How was she at the autograph later on? Karen was quite chatty when she did it and stayed till late to fit everybody in. I think at least 30 minutes after closing time. That's when I saw her and she was buried under gifts and beaming away. I guess it's not entirely Jenna's thing really. She's not a bad guest by any stretch, I guess coming from John Rhys to Jenna was a slight anti climax :p The atmosphere was great. The Star Trek Voyager theme came on a few times made things seem rather epic. I accidently walked into Frank Bruno, saw Malcom McDowell walking around with a little boy collecting autographs, and saw John Rhys Davies at a photoshoot with the guy from Game of Thrones. They were chatting for ages and taking pictures with all the crew, laughing about. Thinking of doing the Doctor Who convention this year...

I imagine it was quite the thing, from soap star to this, plus we can add that she had just been hanging out in the US. The crew were joking while I was in the queue that her pen was practically on fire and people were still grabbing tickets. Torri Higginson was lovely, too, having a few words with everyone before the photo. Grabbed a signed book from Robert Llewellyn not long before leaving. My taxi ride over was a Toyota Prius - this went down well.
I imagine that if she makes it longer, she'll be a bit more comfortable and loosen up at these kind of events
Oh yeah. I don't want to make it sound like she's awful. She's not a bad guest. Just slightly underwhelming and she'll probably get better. Grizz had fun so it must've been an off moment. You can't be giving 100% every second of the day, it will hurt. Somebody is bound to get a slightly disappointing experience at some point.

*looks at avatar* Well, Grizz, can't say you're biased in the slightest
