From what I'm hearing- the Matt news was not supposed to be public ever.
Blame the email leak for yesterdays reveal.
Apparently the crew are deeply unhappy and lost faith in the show due to backstage happenings. Hence the leaks.
I still don't and won't believe that though.

I suppose one benefit of this regeneration is that if it's true the Hurt incarnation is part of the Doctor's 13 possible body list, the next Doctor would be his last incarnation, and we'd have the drama of how the Doctor is going to come to terms with potentially being near death.
And we could have more Valeyard, if any of the writers have the good ideas to sustain bringing him back.

Until New Who Tom Baker was to me the definitive Doctor. I didn't really like Peter Davison, he always seems to play weak characters and I was a bit busy with other things by the time he got the part so didn't watch again until Eccleston. I've still never seen the McGann episode.
Really if the Doctor is going to be old I'd like a dignified yet irascible old man like the first Doctor, not a middle aged man in his late forties. If the Ben Daniels thing really is a fait accompli I guess it will just have to be a case of hoping the show can surprise us all again.

If that is true, that's a real shame. I think a shock regeneration would have been brilliant.
