As for Daniels. He'll only be 6 years younger than Hartnell when he took the role. If he stays for 6 years (which I doubt, he wasn't in Law and Order that long) he'll be on equal ground.
Plus Hartnell's age was a slight problem. His memory was fading to the point he couldn't remember scripts, his temper became incredibly short, and eventually he became simply too ill to continue playing the role. If the David Threlfall rumour is true then he'll actually be [I]older[/I] than Hartnell.
Not that it matters anymore. John Hurt is the oldest Doctor.

I wouldn't be surprised if Mangan reached the Paterson Joseph stage and then they chose Daniels, so now he's just fucking around
Ben Daniels is going to appear in the new series of The Paradise this year as a regular character. Has it ever been the case in the past that an actor playing the Doctor was also starring in another BBC series at the same time?
Daniels will only be doing one episode of Who this year, if he is cast. If the S8 starting in August 2014 rumours are true, he'll be filming that in the first few months of next year.
So he'll easily be able to fit the christmas special in with his shooting schedule for The Paradise.

Matt was in a show that went out a month after his casting was announced.
The filming for The Paradise takes place at a different time of the year. Plus it's a lot shorter schedule than Who. Plus filming for Series 8 isn't really expected take place till "winter" which will probably be January.
I can't see it being a problem unless he does more than one series. He's never stuck on a project more than 3 years. Actually I think Law and Order is the only series he's done more than one.
With Matt there was really no indication he had the part until the day before he announced. Suddenly papers were doing run downs of who was likely to be the next Doctor and the BBC news page had a bunch of well known names and some bloke called Matt Smith, I remember seeing that and thinking "where did this come from? I bet it's him".
Poor Matt was never once rumoured or speculated in the run up to his reveal. I guess that was to get some last minute profile raising. Wouldn't be surprised if Daniels being cast in Paradise is more profile raising from aunty beeb.

Once I held it in high regard. But this week after they published that John Simm interview which he claims never happened I lost faith.
On the internet Doctor Who fans are calling Matt Smith a liar and they're glad he's going because he "lied" about not being in Series 8. They think that because Radio Times published an interview where he said "I'm attached for the next year" Matt is a liar. No. Radio Times (like the Simm interview) conducted the interview in January then published it out of context 5 months later. As a result people think Matt lied when in reality he's essentially been misquoted.
Was a "we sat down With Matt in January" too hard to add to the start? Uh. Journalism.

The only thing we know for certain is Matt is leaving and until marketing for Series 8 starts that's all we'll know I'm afraid.

The Doctor and companion for series 8 will be Alex Kingston and Alex Kingston
