you wouldn't be consciously aware of it.
This is why I think something happens. It's just... when you're unconscious the only two things you can remember are: What happened before you were unconscious, and when you wake up. And I can't imagine how it's possible to not wake up you know ? Because if you don't, what fills the space in between ?
It is impossible to comprehend not existing, and the truth is there is nothing like it. All predictions are either not true, or impossible to prove.
Post-death nothingness isn't sitting in some black void where you get to meditate all day. You're dead. No going back, nothing left of you, you're gone. That's why people are sad when others die, the person has disappeared forever. They haven't gone to a better place, they're not still existent in some infinite plane thinking 'wow this is jolly nice peace and quiet', they're gone.
No. when someone dies people are sad because that person is gone from their lives forever.
Remember what happened before you were born? Same idea with death.
In the end, nothing really matters. You won't even be around to know you're dead. You won't care, and you won't won't care, because you won't even be able to think. It's just like before you were born, except you will never come to life again. [editline]06:18PM[/editline]
This is why I think something happens. i plan on living forever so i won't have to worry about this
How the fuck would you know?
When you die, your brain shuts down. Pretty obvious actually. :downs:
FUCK YOU GUYS stop talking about this you're making me sad... ;_;
If you die you turn into a ghost and you can watch movies for free. That'd be cool.
Hey man I have the same feeling. The peace of the grave awaits me, though I'm not rushing to get there. I'm not sure what exactly happens, and there's no way of finding out, so why worry? Just smoke some more weed and carry on with LIFE!
I always wonder what happens at death. Its not like you think in nothingness for eternity, because your brain is dead, so what the fuck does happen? Think about that for a second.
Atheists say "absolutely nothing." That's it. It's game over and there's nothingness after death.
I stopped right here. Atheism is not what you think. Atheism is simply the mis belief in Dieties, or Gods. We can believe in life after death and the sort. I for one don't believe in God or Satan, but I do believe that death isn't the end.
I'm strangely complacent with the thought that I as a person will cease to exist after I die. I just live my life. Well, I'll only fear my death if it's drawn-out and painful. Also OP, not all atheists expect oblivion after death (although I do).
It's not rest. It's the total void of existence. You can't have thoughts, memories, anything. You are simply dead and no longer do you exist.
I read a book about a girl who remembers before she was born.
That makes no sense. At all.
People just have religion to comfort themselves from death, to know that there is something else after life to do once they are gone, and to not be so sad about it, it gives them something to look forward to. But, most of the people in this thread are right, it is a black void because you would not be able to comprehend a 'heaven'. After you die, the energy of your body leaves and you go power wind or something. If there is a soul, it might go to someone else or even die with you. It wouldn't even matter because you wouldn't know. I just hope that when i'm old I get more comfortable with death, when my Grandma died a few years ago, she had an outfit picked out, a wig picked out, and her will all written and said she was ready to go, I sure hope i'm that confident. I think people just live to find happiness, go through school, make friends, get married, and then die happy. Sometimes death isn't happy but there is no factor/variable controlling that. Even if there is no heaven or anything to do, you won't have to worry about it because you just stop existing.
I saw a commercial on Hulu that talked about life extension specialists, they compared them to people like Einstein [editline]10:49PM[/editline]
I stopped right here. The man in the sky differs with op. Read the pizza boxes.
We can't imagine the pure nothingness that is death and so we invented religion to take its place.
Death is a fact of life. I've come to terms with it. I used to be afraid but I just thought about it and realized that if/when that happens then thats nothing I can help nor stop. No one should be afraid of dieing. Thats like being afraid of the Sun setting (disregard the fact that the sun will cease to exist in a billion years or so). If you've never done anything bad like kill someone, then, regardless of religion, what do you have to worry about?
smoke a blunt everyday don't worry at all
I have made my peace with either of those answers. I say this because either way you're free from this world. No responsibilities, no worries, no getting sick, dealing with sick, stupid or moronic people, etc. It's just nothing. There is nothing. Very peaceful.
What is peaceful for you is not peaceful for me. Being an Atheist, imagine that when you die, you lose everything. There's no one to talk to. There's nothing to do, you lose everything you ever learned. You just descend into a black abyss. You stop existing. Makes you want to live life to it's fullest. Scientists are already working on extending our life time. (keep in mind that we can already live twice as long as people did several centuries ago.) With our sudden interest in science, our lifetimes are exponentially increasing. Who knows if we'll be able to live forever?
Actually there are a couple of scientific theories that could mean live after "death"
I assume death is more or less the same as what it was like before we were born. IE, it doesn't matter
I'm going for round 2 once I go.
You're on the road to agnosticism, son. Also you have pretty much the same belief I do, you're one of the few i've ran into that does.
Making peace with death is embodied in the five-stages of grief, which has been applied to those who are dying. 1. Denial 2. Anger 3. Depression 4. Bargaining 5. Acceptance Not necessarily in that order, nor are they experienced by all, but the basic concept remains the same.
I do actually. I thought about death being like before birth: Not a thought or a care in the world.
you don't remember before your birth ffs
I personally don't believe in gods or deities, but I think that reincarnation would be what I want to happen after death.
