sunno isn't really noise or experimental either, it's drone metal FYI
It's still experimental, imo.
I don't think Animal Collective is the kind of experimental we're talking about here

It's still experimental. Nobody was working with extreme drone until they came into the picture, and they took their sound and it's being constantly explored.

You do know they formed as a result of earth right
You do know they formed as a result of earth right
They formed as a tribute to Earth yes, but their sound is very much their own.
how can you say they are extreme drone and earth are not
actually lets just forget it, this isn't what music is about
This thread makes no sense. But let me clear something up here: Animal Collective is to Experimental Music as Benny Benassi is to Electronic Music.

Uh, because they are, and earth are not.
Earth is drone, but it's not NEARLY as extreme as Sunn O))).
Compare
Earth:

Sunn O))):

Tell me Sunn O))) isn't a more extreme version of Earth.
I love them both don't get me wrong. Just saying.
In other news I know Animal Collective isn't as experimental as a lot of stuff but I love them in their own merit.

Earth 2 is one of my favorites. But I love the new direction they're going after Hex.

I'm pretty sure that Stars of the Lid was doing drones before Animal Collective came along
I think he was talking about Sunn O))) Not many were doing such extreme drones as Sunn O))). Not till they did their first album at least.
SONIC MAYHEM.
Good, old noize. Probably a very early example (mid-90s) of this kind of sound. Did the Quake 3 soundtrack, which I recommend getting a hold of. Also did the theme to Tommorow Never Dies (Confrontation), which is fucking ace.
I'm pretty sure that Stars of the Lid was doing drones before Animal Collective came along
I'm pretty sure La Monte Young were doing drones before Stars of the Lid were out of preschool.
I'm pretty sure Morton Subotnick was creating electronic music before any of these guys were born.
I saw Sutcliffe Jugend and merzbow live it was raw.
Oh, lucky! I'd eat baby to see either of them live.
Here's the video from my live:

Listening to some CoLD SToRAGE and Photek. Fucking ace stuff.
Buying some 12" singles from CoLD SToRAGE as soon as I get me some monies in - although 20 odd quid is expensive for two tracks D:
Photek is not noise or experimental, but still very good
Depends on what of his stuff you listen to; his pre-drum and bass era stuff is fairly ambient and experimental :)

I thought he only released drum n bass. Then again, I only own Form & Function and Modus Operandi

What experimental stuff has he released?
I once out of curiosity put Merzbow into a Pandora radio, I liked what I heard, but the rest of the stuff that came up was really spotty- I mean, the stuff by Merzbow was fairly solid and consistently good, but the rest was really... Iffy, IMO that is.

If you can get hold of some of his first EPs / demos (such as the one on Metalheadz or better, before that), they are considerably more ambient and a little experimental. Arguably, it's still fairly drum n bass mind - but considering it's early 1990's, it's more of a precursor.
I really like Philip Glass, I cannot find much of his music on youtube, but i can find covers,
this is called 'Music in Fifths', it's very repititious, you have been warned

Been listening to Pulse Demon a lot lately, for better or worse
It is beyond my understanding what there is to like about pure noise.
Masonna and Merzbow are a pain in the ass to listen to.
Only thing I've really gotten into is Aube.
It is beyond my understanding what there is to like about pure noise.
It's still music so it's subject to scrutiny just like any other genre. If you really want to argue "why is this even music," read about danger music.
Edit: I've only listened to two of Merzbow's earlier albums so I can't really say anything about him.
Rolling and Scratching by Daft Punk?

Art and experimental are kickass but I don't see how people can call a nearly unchanging pitch of white noise "music".
