So here's the real issue, why does it occur? People didn't come to a consensus that they would collectively harass women and it's not going to be fixed by changing that consensus. It occurs because women are new to the scene, because the culture maintains a lot of adolescent immaturity, and of course because any minority will be harassed. Women being new is obviously going to change, the immaturity is avoidable and despised regardless of this issue, and harassment of minorities gets better as soon as they find someone else to hate on, or they get sufficient numbers.
But here's the problem, treating women like they can't handle this shit, that they need to be protected from the big bad meanies and just generally white knighting is just as counter-productive. When every teenager on Xbox live was screaming nigger or faggot, did people get mad and make a big issue of how racist and homophobic they were? It doesn't matter if they can hide it better than women can, making a big deal of it is only going to create a reactionary culture.
