That's sad. I think Jontron would really like Tim Schafer's games.
You can like what someone's made (or even like that person) while disagreeing with them.
I love Tarantino movies, but I think the man himself is a bit of a prick.
"Are they mormon or somethin'?"
jontron 2014 on sams family liking monopoly :v:
Could be worse, coulda called em jews :v:
This is a really good discussion on the problems with weird feminist stuff.
@TimOfLegend Also that's very classy of you to mob your entire fanbase on me because I have an opinion. Stay classy, Tim.

He's right though, the video game industry is far from having good writers, most characters in recent games are either male power fantasies or female sexual fantasies, there isn't one side that's more badly treated than the other and there isn't any visible effort to make this worse.
That's mostly true, but Telltale and a few other studios focused on story telling have made good strides in representation of different groups. Unfortunately, most of the games are more interactive stories, but at least it's a start

I hate the concept that a lot of studios/people have that if video games want to have 'better' storytelling or more mature stories they have to turn into long series of cutscenes with little to no interactivity or be a series of menu-based decisions strung together. Obviously it depends on what type of story you're telling but that shouldn't be considered the method of storytelling, to make your game more like a movie just because movies are the big boys. I'm tired of the cinematic experience.
I mean, it's been happening for a long time with JRPGs, a genre I do love, so it really comes down to execution and it's not like Telltale's games are bad for taking this method. But there are better ways to tell a story than taking control away from the player and telling them to sit back and watch.

ideally the mechanics and the story should be intertwined in such a way that you can't have one without the other. papers please is a good example of this. the story and dialogue informs your actions and you make real decisions based on it. without the story you'd just have a boring paperwork sim
I don't know if this is what Reds is talking about but games always feel less enjoyable when you are fighting someone and it cuts to a scene where you can't have any choice on what happens even though you just spent 30 minutes in an intense fighting sequence deciding what the protagonist does.
Why can't I be influential in both the gameplay and the cutscenes?
Edit: sorry hydra
contrast this with a game such as hotline miami, where you could easily just have the individual levels without any narrative tying them together. the mechanics are in some way disconnected from the plot they're set in

FUCKING automerge
I missed the podcast and can't seem to watch it on Twitch, when are they usually uploaded on youtube?

some games and some stories can only be told in certain contexts, and in some of those situations we exercise suspension of disbelief.
suspension of disbelief only covers key points though, it doesn't make an inconsistent world make sense.

Thursday.
What was that western-y whistle-y song on the stream during intermission? It was fucking insane.
oh no #IStandWithJontron is now a trending subject on twitter. thanks internet.
This is really getting out of hand, honestly. I'm not on the side of Jontron on a lot of things, but it's gotten far enough to be really petty about the shit he's doing.
Thankfully the friend I have that's closest to the SJW side is making fun of the situation rather than protesting against him, otherwise I'd have lost a friend over internet shit.
I find it scary that people get so pumped up over one person's opinion on Twitter. Especially when that person is just stating what he thinks, he isn't trying to change the world with it or something, the US really needs to cool down with these social network dramas, it's pathetic.
I shit on any human that doesn't look nice when they have no other redeeming qualities.
well your posts make you come off a person with no other redeeming qualities so you better show us a pic real quick or i'm gonna have to take a shit on you
don't make an internet issue an attack on a nationality, that shit's stupid
especially since your post was perfectly fine until you decided to make it about Americans and nobody else as if internet drama is our fault or even more frequent with Americans. Which it isn't, and you know that.
Sorry if you feel offended or something but most of the times twitter drama happens, it's all Americans involved. Call xenophobic if you want, it's as simple as checking who's tweeting what. I'm not derailing the thread with nationality shit, so there's that.

also it's really sad that tim schafer has that opinion. jons on point as usual, both sexes are portrayed as extremes and neither is better or worse than the other.

dammit, you caught us
we're a secret ops group working with the CIA on a big plan for big guys where we stir shit up on twitter in order to instigate international relations
Also maybe America being the most populous English-speaking country in the world.

isn't that kind of missing the point? Like yeah, always being a shallow power fantasy affects men negatively, but it fits the patriarchal narrative, which is why it's worth deconstructing from a feminist perspective.
Why does it have to be deconstructed from a feminist perspective for it to be valid? A neutral deconstruction sounds a lot better.

because that doesn't account for the system of oppression that we're dealing with. Shouting at the skies for things to be equal without having a basis for criticism accomplishes nothing.

That sounds weirdly hostile on Jon's end. Doesn't he love Tim Schafer? He depicted the dude going up to Valhalla after all.
he doesnt seem hostile hes just voicing his disagreement?
Tim Schafer then insults Jon for being sad and having lots of viewers???
Tim is too much of a dick to state an opinion and debate?
I sent Jon an email. That's the closet thing to a celebrity fan mail I've ever sent.
I just felt like I had to send along my good wishes with everyone else who presumably has had the same idea. He's too good a guy not to.

If you're backing up the existence of that system of oppression with things taken from a feminist perspective, we've completed the circular logic.
Just as pretending everything is equal won't make it equal, looking at everything as oppression won't make it oppression
