I can't blame him for saying the "retarded" thing in the first place because it happens to everyone, and it was an honest mistake. I think his handling of the situation afterwards was immature and poor and I commend him on not bringing it up anymore but it keeps on being brought up by every e-celeb on the planet trying to latch on like leeches to the drama.
And, in my opinion, the whole "men are objectified just the same as women are because muscles" is unrealistic. Video game males are male power fantasies and I don't think anyone had ever brought up the supposed male objectification until the whole feminism in video games trend. People saw their hobby threatened and defended it, which I have no problem with as long as it's accurate and doesn't detract from another groups well being. Then it becomes selfish.
All in all, has this situation escalated past where it had any right to? Yes. But is Jon immune from criticism on his handling of the situation in being mature, tactful, and professional? Not in the slightest. I hope he has learned something from the ordeal, because the mob defending him have not.
If he had apologized instead of calling the man a retard himself none of this would have happened. It's not an issue of political correctness, it's an issue of professionalism.

I don't hate the guy, not in the slightest. But this certainly isn't a molehill. He has a huge following of dedicated and loving fans that WILL be influenced by his opinions. He has an enormous platform and needs to handle it in a dignified manner.

When people bring up the 'men with muscles, bad attitudes, and concrete for brains' thing they're usually not trying to say the 'women in chainmail bikinis' thing is unimportant, or even that they're on the same level. Often they're trying to point out that people have been complaining about this shit for at least a decade at this point, and singling out one problem isn't going to fix anything. A lot of the time when I see people talking about bad female characters it reads like "Hey, did you guys know that the girls in this are poorly written. That's bad!" We know, it's been an issue for years.
The problem with sexy two dimensional women in games is the exact same problem as muscular two dimensional men in games. It's all just bad writing. It isn't a fucking coincidence that games that have well written male characters, more often than not, also have well written female characters.
You shouldn't be campaigning for "Better female characters in game" because it's a distraction from the real issue. Characters in the vast majority of games are made in a template. Generic white protagonist, generic female sidekick who is somehow quirky so you don't hate her, comic relief male sidekick who'll be plot relevant once and either die or do something unlikely but very helpful, old dude who's kind of part of the group but isn't really any more, mentor man who dies part way through the game to give you motivation, and annoying rival who antagonises you (the player) until some kind of show down or stand off can happen.
I've been pointing this shit out for years, and it used to be I only pointed it out in JRPG threads but it's getting fucking worse. Companies are terrified of taking any risks, so they reuse the same characters over and over and everyone's so obsessed with stupid business shit and 'better female characters' that they're ignoring the root problem for most of these games.
The solution is simple, you just higher better writers. You higher people to write a story for a game, and not to patch together a story from a set of pre-defined archetypes. Do that and bam, better male characters, better female characters, better stories over all, more attention to detail. And we can all stop complaining about pointless shit in games and continue complaining about the stupid shit publishers do.

Most of the video game industry's like a massive clusterfuck of circlejerking. There is a very apparent faction of people who somehow have an important say and what games is good and what isn't, who's worthy of staying in the industry and who isn't, and if you don't suck up to them big time, you're outed as a pariah and making games because increasingly difficult because a pretty big portion of websites and important people will treat you like shit or refuse to deal with your games objectively.
The only reason the whole zoe quinn business hasn't been taken to court is because people are afraid they'll lose their job and be excluded from the one place they can actually use their skill in.

I like how everyone points only to women as being objectified. if you've noticed its society as a whole that's a problem and not just videogames. Seriously pick up a magazine and all you see is the "ideal image" for both men and women. Self-esteem has been an all time low for teens/young adults coming out of highschool/college due to the media slamming in whats perfect and that you are disgusting.
Seriously the only protagonist I can think of at the top of my head that isn't like that is the protagonists in silent hill 1-4 and Siren blood curse's characters. And the only reason why is because it doesn't want you to be a hero and more of an survivor. No one wants to take any kind of risks with character development of a zero becoming a hero unless its horror.

Also, there are a lot of other things people should be supporting worldwide, people get so obessesed about certain things that happen in NA and Europe, not sayin its not important, but you have to fix the big issues before you can work on the little things. These are such trivial issues to get THIS upset about.
I try and talk about the women to drive movement whenever possible because its a great campaign for a TON of reasons. Its an effort to get rid of the mass sexism prevalant in those countries, and ultimately it definitely does affect americans.
Dont waste effort curing the cold when cancer and AIDS are uncured.

Its more that not ENOUGH effort is being directed at those really really important issues. Im NOT saying that women should be silent and sit down about issues which DIRECTLY affect their wellbeing such as fear of rape, and stuff like that, but putting this much effort into talking about one guy who maybe said something that he shouldnt is futile in fighting sexism compared to campaigning against baby infants being killed because of their gender, or women stoned to death because of rape.
And when you fix problems like that quicker, welfare for women will DRASTICALLY increase worldwide.
