It wouldn't hurt to use some capitalisation or even punctuation either. It makes you appear lesser than you actually are, which is not something a person ever really wants to do. I don't think the word's the core of the issue here anyway. Jon could have nipped all of this anger in the bud if he just said sorry to the person who originally got offended by his use of the word, but instead he decided to just fuel the flames by pulling the "I don't care what you think, I say what I want." card.
