I actually think having a final season is a good idea for Dexter. That way they can actually write towards a satisfying conclusion, and have more daring events take place (like killing off major characters), instead of trying to write in such a way so that the show can keep going forever.
Just as long as the ending isn't Dexter driving off into the sunset with inspirational music playing, "to kill another day".
I have to imagine it either ends with him dying or him swearing off killing.

The only positive I can see from this is the writers won't make side plots that end up having no purpose. Eh, who am I kidding, that's not going to happen.
I hope the series ends with Dexter's death, any other ending would probably be a bit of a cop out.
Debra kills Dexter in a kill room.

No, that's too obvious, it needs to be more unpredictable.
He'll trip and fall on his knife while preparing breakfast.
His son kills him.
"Statement: Surprise Motherfucker"
I'm surprised there's no gif of Dexter removing the knife from one of his victims and as he does they do a "surprise motherfucker" alien-esque scene.
I'd apng-avatar it.
I think that the only good ending of the series would be Dexter suicide, as an only option that's left.
I could definitely see that. But what would push him to suicide? His kid doing something?
It would be all symbolic of him killing criminals.
He can rationalize not dying because he has to live for his son. The only way he'd rationalize suicide would be if he couldn't kill anymore, and if he couldn't, then he couldn't kill himself.
The thing with his son is good, but maybe doing something totally wrong with The Code. Doing something that horrible, that he would be much worse than people he puts on table, doing something that he could not live with this.
Being forced to kill his own son because his son broke the code and mindlessly killed someone. Like his sister.
I bet the end is Dexter waking up from a coma because Doakes punched him into one at one point thus revealing that all the bad writing was bullshit which follows with the final words ''Surprise, mothafucka.'' and after that a black screen.
I really hope Dexter hallucinates Doakes at one point, telling him not to kill.
And it opens with him jumping out from behind something with "Surprise, mothafucka."

It was the best episode of last season. I wish they would expand [sp]whole thing with his evil brother returning as a ghost[/sp] to an entire season.
If their writers could handle a complicated storyline I'd say yes, but that episode was the poster boy for "good idea, bad execution" so much that I was banging my head to a wall in shame.

I can't hit the agree button strong enough. Ever since they completely messed up Dexter dealing with **HUGE SPOILER AHEAD** [sp]Rita's death[/sp] and the Nebraska episode I have no hope for these writers.
I still like the show, but the more outside the box they try and write, the sloppier it gets. If they play it safe and stick to the basics, it'll be kind of bland and average, but at least acceptable. If they try and write more interesting shit, it's really hit and miss.
Which is why I'm worried about the next season: They're going to pretty much go all in with what we've been waiting for for a long, long time and it's either going to be atrocious or great. There's not really a middle ground with this.
[sp]The Season 7 Finale of Dexter will be called "Surprise, Motherfucker!"

Tonight's the night, and it's going to happen again and again. I can't believe I am still watching this show after the last two disappointing seasons. I have a slither of hope that it will get better, however I am doubtful. No other TV show has kept my interest for so long with such poor quality, I usually drop them the second they go bad, like the last season of Scrubs, or countless other shows.
