It's debated often whether or not "Mona Lisa" was actually a woman. Speculated to even have been a self-portrait of the artist cross-dressing.
The main problem with women from past ages (despite beauty standards) is that they had really bad teeth.

Mona Lisa has breasts, I'm pretty sure that makes her a female.
I've never heard of Leonardo da Vinci crossdressing, but I'm pretty sure he had a huge beard so that would be hard to pull off.

If not cross dressing, himself as a woman. It's hard to know, I didn't come up with the theory.
But if you think about it, "she" isn't all to feminine other than the breasts; which aren't all too prominent. Compare the "Mona Lisa" (painting had no given name) to Leonardo's self portrait.

One also has to consider the validity of artistic depictions of women from those times. Look at how we treat our models; we airbrush them and smother them in makeup so they look "presentable"! Who's to say that an artist from earlier on said to himself <<Oh hell, I might as well make this one a bit smaller and have a more attractive brow.>> As a result of the opinions of people of their time, and how they perceive beauty, is an artist more likely to receive a larger payment for a painting that was commissioned of a king's wife, or one that had the same woman but modified so she looked "presentable".

None of you were alive back then, none of you. So don't assume they were, because you don't know. And not even history books are all that accurate about what people may have been like(why would they focus on particular personalities?), so I think it's best you don't even ponder this. You're not going to get anywhere and are most likely going to be disappointed if you did. lol.
