stuff like being ripped off would be clever; your end goal is to make a profit so it should be possible to cut stuff or otherwise lie, like selling shit weed "yea man this is some killer skunk no doubt pay a bit extra". at the start of the game any means of making money would suffice, so the player should be give creative options to make easy dolla, like full on ripping people off by selling crushed up generic painkillers as speed or something, which should only be done when desperate for money and only to people who repercussions are not likely with (although there's always the possibility that you'll piss off the wrong person) [editline]5th October 2014[/editline] our game will teach kids how to become cheap drug dealers [editline]5th October 2014[/editline] i love it [editline]5th October 2014[/editline] we could include a pisstake of silk road ("the velvet trail") which allows you to huuugely increase your profits by shipping in stuff from other countries, this can boost your profits massively but puts you at risk of getting busted (multiple shipments will make it more and more likely for customs to catch on, or maybe the vendor turns out to be unreliable, or maybe your delivery simply goes missing resulting in nothing but loss of money) [editline]5th October 2014[/editline] there could be various ways throughout the world to progress with your endeavor, such as sticking up and robbing ambulances and those big vans that carry medical supplies (steal all the morphine and sell it), or on a smaller scale simply stealing from a pharmacy. petty crime could also be a side feature out in the world, allowing you to attempt to rob potentially any intractable character in order to gain some quick money or possibly useful equipment or drugs (mugging people would lead to increased police attention, potentially unwanted gang feuds and loss of business should you rob someone unaware that they want to make a deal with you or something) i love thinking of stuff for this game
Or if the player chooses, he can be a really chill, laid back, honest drug dealer, who still makes decent money. First thing I'll contribute is the variables for the drugs. Something like this, if anybody feels like contributing I can make this a shared Google Drive document [t]http://i.imgur.com/Jd2JVN6.png[/t] [editline]5th October 2014[/editline] Updated: [t]http://i.imgur.com/uWrEdkT.png[/t]
exactly! it's all about the player's schemes and plans. do they want to make it to the top and become a kingpin so they can sit back and watch money automatically pour in, or are they more interested in selling drugs to fund their personal substance research project in which they produce a wide variety of drugs with the goal to try everything out (meaning the game would have to have some fun reasons to actually take the drugs) [editline]5th October 2014[/editline] i think other than growing stuff there should also be just about everything like cocaine, amphetamine, methamphetamine, crack, opiates, just about [I]everything[/I] that can be traded, for the players that want to "get big" for those less interested in the business side of things, there's also the whole agricultural aspect to be found within the growing and harvesting of drugs, as well as synthesis and extraction for those who like chemistry and sciencey stuff
And the player can take different routes to the same drug, like I've shown, he can either wait a helluva long time for his peyote to grow (which is illegal) or he can buy a legal mescaline containing cactus and wait way less but have a much lower/less potent yield. [editline]5th October 2014[/editline] You're right, these variables should include things like economic values such as the current price of drugs, etc.
yep! you can be either a smooth ass hustler and [I]trade[/I] or you can be a humble stoner and [I]grow[/I], or you can do a mix of both, whatever you have to do, whatever opportunities appear. this game will be cool as fuuuuuck. [editline]5th October 2014[/editline] with this could be skill points, for those who want to do business primarily by trading there would be a talking perk which increases your ability to sweet talk people into deals (reduced prices, increased sale likelihood, avoid trouble by talking your way out of it) and for those who would rather produce the product themselves they can hone their skills in their preferred field, whether it be growing herbal things or working in a lab to create chemicals
Perhaps we should start with the underlying code now that we have a good idea of what the game could be about. I think LOVE2D was the most popular option, and probably the easiest to code in. So.. Shall we set up a git repo?
would that engine work? i think the world will have to be big, at least a small section of a city. a good setting would be city blocks and street corners with various apartments, garages and other properties that you can rent and purchase.
Yeah I think it would make it a lot more interesting if this all took place in 1 city. Perhaps after we get single player down we could start considering networking, since that's a lot of work. I wonder how easy networking is in Lua.
if the game's multiplayer, it could be like with servers. so, either you can work on your enterprise in your singleplayer world or you could join your favourite server and compete against other players or join forces and form gangs in order to take control of the drug scene of that server's city this game has a lot of potential replayability
Let's focus on single player for now. What kinds of buildings do we need in our world? CVS/Walgreens pharmacies obviously, for buying precursors or robbing the pharmacists/people who buy pharmaceuticals. Apartments and small houses for rent or lease Police stations to avoid [editline]5th October 2014[/editline] Lowes/Home Depot or other stores for supplies
I leave for 20 minutes and shit gets ironed out a ton, love it.
crack houses, garages, maybe some creative stuff like big labs (to rob synthesis shit breaking bad style) as well as your own big-ass labs like the underground brba one, with this could be the money laundering schemes which could be anything from restaurants to record labels to any other type of business (we can just come up with a bunch of ideas for money laundering opportunities rather than create every single business ever of course)
So we doing it in love? [editline]5th October 2014[/editline] [QUOTE=TCB;46159058]crack houses, garages, maybe some creative stuff like big labs (to rob synthesis shit breaking bad style) as well as your own big-ass labs like the underground brba one, with this could be the money laundering schemes which could be anything from restaurants to record labels to any other type of business (we can just come up with a bunch of ideas for money laundering opportunities rather than create every single business ever of course)[/QUOTE] So if it's gonna be a gta like top down game we need to figure out how we are going to do buildings. We could potentially do 2d sprites and have 3d buildings or something?
i suggest there's one large world for the outside (so that's the roads, street corners, alleys and parks) and then you enter doors to load a new interior level. kind of like how it's done in games like gta, but top down (so like how it's done in pokemon) [editline]5th October 2014[/editline] i still think the best possible fuckin name for this shit is [I][B]HUSTLE[/B][/I]
That's not what I mean, I mean the actual buildings in the world. If the games 2d and top down you can't have just 2d buildings because they would look flat and goofy you know what I'm saying? If we did 2d sprites and 3d buildings we could have some form of depth and also the ease of content creation that comes with 2d stuff. More people can work on it as well if we have 2d sprites.
Yeah Pokemon style seems to be the easiest
for exterior levels, doors warp you to interior levels. for interior levels, doors simply open and close and you can enter different rooms without loading a new level (although different floors to a building would most likely require a new game level). just like pokemon.
like an earthbound/nuclear throne perspective where everything's 2d [IMG]http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-j35zMDMkyM8/Tbz9QGj2pwI/AAAAAAAAADI/MDb2SDL8vqM/s1600/Week+4+-+Mother+3+%25282%2529.jpg[/IMG] OR [IMG]http://img1.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20100923232758/gtawiki/images/a/a3/GTA_1_psone.png[/IMG]
if we wanted to be reaaally lazy we could probably create this in rpg maker :v: [img]http://s3-ap-northeast-1.amazonaws.com/bc2prod/rpgmaker-20130522223546811/files/FeatureXP4.jpg[/img] [I]buuuut[/I] that sucks and it's for babies.
we aren't using rpg maker
i prefer the second one, something like stick rpg [img]http://html5games.de/sites/default/files/styles/image_detail/public/stick.png[/img] but more stylized hopefully [editline]5th October 2014[/editline] yea ik rpg maker fuckin sucks, that perspective just reminded me of that style
I guess the perspective is really up to programmers [editline]5th October 2014[/editline] we gotta do straight top down if we wanna have cars and shit though
Yeah cars would be nice, police and shiet.
cars would be a big bonus, would make deals easier as well as allow you to transport (and therefore purchase) more supplies during any given trip, you could kit your car out with practical stuff like stashes to hide your drugs as well as cosmetic stuff like sexy sound systems (which would add to your image, so those who wish to make their money by being str8 up tru hustlaz would be able to make deals easier with their gangsta street cred :v:)
alright we need cars. So any ideas what the games gonna be programmed in? If anyone has any preferences just say so because it's up in the air right now.
maybe reputation should be a force in this game, the more notorious you are the more influence you have (meaning you could muscle people into paying more, intimidate people, rob people easily as well as decreasing chances of petty opposition [but potentially increasing chances of large blows to your business should someone wish to crush your empire]), being careless with your reputation would result in getting caught or even ruined by someone who simply got jealous of your big shot persona fuck knows, i'm really baked and i'm just thinking of things that could flesh the game out (though i imagine something like reputation would have to be implemented fairly soon in development, after all the core essentials are in place of course)
I can do some 3D modeling if you guys need help It'd be a pretty good way to create sprites
love2d looks good, from what i've seen. that said, i'm not a programmer so i don't have much say, from my view it seems like it can get the job done, not sure if it can have big enough worlds though
[QUOTE=Garb;46159353]alright we need cars. So any ideas what the games gonna be programmed in? If anyone has any preferences just say so because it's up in the air right now.[/QUOTE] C# with appropriate libraries because it's easy and fast (runtime wise and programming wise).
Alright everybody, if you want to work on the game add me on skype: Higuything21 (my picture is a banana) OR send me a message on FP of what you can do. I want to get a list together of people so it's easier to decide on languages and so on, I'll get a group Skype thing going. [editline]5th October 2014[/editline] still obviously going to use this thread I just want to compose a list of people with skills willing to work
