It's the thing controlled by your f-number. If the number is big, then your aperture is smaller or narrower. If the number is small, then your aperture is larger or wider. It's backwards because the f-number is actually a ratio or a fraction. If you have f/5.6, the fraction is really 1/5.6, which is bigger than, say, 1/22. (I'm not sure that 1 is the top number, but it works for explaining it.)
Your aperture is one of the three elements that controls how much light gets into your lens. It is actually an iris that opens and closes to be wider or narrower, like the iris in your eye. The main effect it has is this: If the aperture is wide open (low number), you get a thin or shallow depth of field. If the aperture is narrow (high number), you get a long or deep depth of field. It's easiest to see the difference simply by going to Google Image Search and searching for "Long Depth of Field" and "Shallow Depth of Field."
Aperture also has a secondary, more subtle effect on your image that is a result of lens construction. Your f-stop (f-number) will affect how sharp your image is. Typically, most lenses are sharpest around f/8. If you shoot wide open (the lowest number your lens will go to), you may notice a small drop in sharpness. If you shoot very narrow (about f/16 or higher) you may also notice a drop in sharpness. Landscape photographers have to be careful about balancing depth of field against sharpness, since a very narrow aperture will get the longest depth of field but will also lose sharpness.
A third effect aperture has on your image is specific to flash photography, though it is really more dependent on shutter speed. The balance between aperture and shutter speed will affect the balance between light from the flash versus ambient light in your photo. If you use a wider aperture with a shorter shutter speed, you will get more flash light and less ambient light. If you use a narrower aperture with a longer shutter speed, you will get less flash light and more ambient light. This is because the flash only lights up the area for a tiny amount of time. Since aperture affects how much light gets into the camera in any given instant, the wider the aperture, the more light you will get from the flash.
I tried to keep the language simple but I might have gotten carried away. If you need more explanation for anything, let me know
iris was the key-word, cheers mate. (I work years with video cameras, IRIS is my bro)
So is a Canon EOS Rebel xs film camera (not digital) with manual, a caring case and two lenses( 35-105mm and 28-200mm) for $75 a decent deal?
No.
But 75$ is like nothing at all.
But I don't know shit about photography anyway :v:

For a film rebel XS with those shitty lenses it is a lot. Get an Olympus OM-10 or Pentax ME Super with a good 50mm prime.
preferably join the me super club
ME Super club woo.
That thing is brilliant.
Okay thanks. So which one would you recommend? Are they very similar to each other?

Going to Whipsnade Zoo on Sunday, I think it'll be a good challenge for me to try and get some natural/emotive shots rather than "this is an animal, it is in a zoo" shots.
You can tell me how much I missed the target sometime next week. :)
Just played 8ball with the fellas, took camera with me.
Lousy shots, like seriously bad.

Hey man, some photo opportunities just don't turn out like you hope. I'm pretty sure everyone on this forum knows that feeling.

Just stoped by to blurp something out to people that actually understand.
I Just got my first Degree in photography... Master's Degree I'm on my way... maybe...
I'm a bit in panic... I got to take care of my portfolios in the next few months. And try and see if i'm able to land a exposition gig, or anything related to geting my work out there...
Any more ideas on how could I do this?

a tactic I'm trying is to print off a few mini photos that I like, with info that I'd usually have on a business card nicely watermarked in, and leaving them at the counter of local places. I know a lot of mom-and-pop kind of shops in my area have a little rack people leave their business cards on, that's always helpful.

Cool, did it already work for you?
I still have the prints on my desk, was going to go plant stuff monday, heh. A business card-sized shiny photo print instead of just any old business card is a bit eye catching. I'm leaving 4x6 cards for the car nuts in my area, they're REALLY proud of their work and love showing it off, so a crisp shot of a car that's bigger than 3 business cards stacked together is a bit hard to ignore, heh.

I'm also giving the owner of this car a whole stack of photos of it like this to hand out. 27 different shots, probably gonna make an album to stick them in and print off a few duplicates of the favorites so he can use those as contact cards for me.
Two rolls down, 3 more to go.

Thanks guys, appreciated.
Just came back from my 1st movie's premiere (a social event with like 40 friends which we invited to show our film), I'm so drunk right now I think I'll just sleep a few days and then upload photos...
god man, put pegs on the bottom of that shit
I was going to but I couldn't find them.
Well tits, accidentally shot in Tv when I meant to shoot in Av, causing me to needlessly have 2000+ ISO on some shots.
Fuck, 200 photos of yesterday's social event and nothing post-worthy, god damn it Daniel.
By the way,
someone in this subforum made a post about Pixelpost and I just tried it out. I like it, gonna use it from now on. Just set up the basic things right now and uploaded some pictures I did a while ago. (these are not very good but oh well)
If you guys want to check it out, just click the Homepage button under my Avatar.
Also thanks to whoever made a post about Pixelpost! :)
