in other news, was watching some digital rev and spied Kai and a camera man. Do they use DSLRs to film their stuff? I can't see it all that well but it kinda looks like it.

The camera mans name is lok, he uses a variety of cameras to film. For sure I've seen him use a 600D and a 60D and a 5D MKII.
Here's a video of him telling how to do good video on a DSLR

That's really good!
My point and shoot is pretty good for macros and pretty good under certain lighting conditions when I fiddle with the ISO and white balance, but otherwise it's not great

Macro doesn't work well with big objects with this point and shoot, so the background in the sign picture was still pretty much sharp - just not detailed.
I had to "fake" the depth of field.

Here's the original unedited photo.

Looks like it could use some contrast and maybe a bit more exposure while you're at it. Looks very bland and gray right now. Still, not at all bad for a point and shoot.

Actually it's meant to have low contrast. I always liked this eerie idea of a child-friendly location gone hostile/abandoned.
The low contrast is supposed to give that feeling by not making the picture seem alive enough.
I suppose it comes from playing S.T.A.L.K.E.R. too much.
Guys. Guys, guys, guys. Ok.
I just discovered, deep within the "Shooting" menu of my D3100, a setting for "On-Camera Flash". I'd seen this before and thought nothing of it. But guys. Get this. I attached my SB-400 (which has no controls on it other than On/Off) and guess what happened? The menu item changed from "On-Camera Flash" to "Optional Flash". And guess what settings were in there? TTL and, you guessed it, manual control all the way down to 1/128.
Here I was thinking I'd have to pay lodes of emone for manual off-camera lighting. All I need is a TTL sync cord (TTL so it'll send the manual control through, hopefully) and if I want extra range I can grow some balls and do this DIY! Hell, it's not a whole lot of power, but I could use this with umbrellas if I wanted to, I imagine.
[editline]edit[/editline]
Also, I think I just fired that thing off at full power for the first time (thanks to manual control). In relative darkness. HOLY SHIT THAT'S BRIGHT.
Seeing as I've never used flash in my life, that post went right over my head.
I used to hate flash. With a passion. Then I discovered fill flash and bounce flash. Then I discovered strobist.com. I still don't use on-camera flash very often, but off-camera flash is where I'm gonna make my next camera-related purchase(s), I think.
Is there much use for flash in outdoor stuff?
I'd link you up to an article but Google's not returning anything useful. Look up "fill flash".

Ah okay, thanks :)
Back to the worst accident I've had with a camera...
Some friends and I decided to sit out on a path in the student village at Uni one day. Beers were consumed and live music was played for a few hours.
I drunkenly (and stupidly) decided to try and do a handstand.
I slipped and fell forwards in a forward flip and landed with my back straight on top of my D80 with an old external flash on top.
Completely snapped my external flash in half and broke the pop-up flash on my D80, exposing all the internal wiring that connects the top of the camera to the flash. I never took it out in bad weather again after that for the fear of damaging any more electricals. The camera still worked fine, but it's just not the same having a camera without a working flash and half its innards exposed to the elements.
That was a bad day.
Is there much use for flash in outdoor stuff?
fill flash (whoops I'm late). Basically, using it to light up the shadows on your subject just a little more, so you don't have super harsh contrast on people. It's done best with a proper cinegel filter on your flash so that it produces the same temperature color as the sunlight.
Speaking of, the strobist color gel set came in my mail today, yayyy. Now I just need a gel mounting sleeve so it sits securely on the camera.
The worst accident I've had with any of my cameras was when the strap of my Olympus OM-1N got caught on my clothes which caused it to fall off the desk and hit the floor. I didn't think anything happened to it until I saw this

The top plate now has a big dent in the upper left corner. Thankfully everything still works. I hope one day to come across a stupid cheap broken OM-1N so that I can swap out the top plates.
We had a Leica camera back when I was born
My dad broke it
so my brother got arrested and his truck with all his photography and video equipment was impounded
i hope they didn't steal his shit man

damn :(
what did he do?
DWI, his first and only one. That was a pretty stupid move, but everyone makes mistakes. My parents went out of town to go pick him up.

Ah, that's not too bad
best of luck
I haven't shot anything in a really long time and I feel bad about it
I'm going to go and shoot for the rest of the day!

First day in the institute, lots of Canon-lads here with their fancy cameras, cool chicks and fun enviroment.
I'm going to enjoy these 2 years.
I once had my Sigma 50mm f1.4 lens on the table, and my Canon 7D with some crap lens on it on my lap, and I managed to hit the Sigma lens so it started falling, so I reach out grabbing it, forgetting about the camera on my lap, which almost falls but I manage to catch it with my legs.
I don't think my heart stopped beating faster than it should that day.
DAYUM, something similar happened to me one day. I was at disney with my bud, and well, I was trying to tie my shoes, and I had my 7D on my shoulder, so I knelled down to tie my shoe, then suddenly the camera came flying down my shoulder and well hit the ground. 7D 501.4 too. It survived the crime scene, luckily, but after that one day, I've never been more careful. OH YEAH This one time, I was swapping out lenses, and then some chick came to hug me so I did, and well, while doing so, I whipped my pretty much new 100 macro IS onto the ground, the lens hood absorbed nearly 100% of the grunt and well lens hood cracked, and lens is still as sharp as ever. My heart stopped for nearly a second, almost died too. :(
I barely shot :(
I NEED HELP
SEROUSLY

its not out of focus it just is all soft an un-crisp
That's odd, is it not focusing at infinity or something?
maybe it's just low quality glass?

Finally, I guess I'll have to find another scanner to buy then.
By the time I get a new one I will have ~250 negatives to scan.
