I haven't used my digital Canon EOS in a while ever and started using a film Minolta with a Sigma lens a few weeks ago, and today I used my friends EOS500D and I was suprised at how cheap the "cheap" Canon lenses feel. He had two lenses, the kit and a zoom lens and both felt like cheap plastic. It was also kind of "hard" to zoom but that might be a good thing, focusing however felt bad. Now I'm not as excited about getting a new EOS as I was before. :( (simply because I cannot afford Sigma lenses)

Uh, Sigma lenses tend to be cheaper than Canon ones.

I just noticed that yeah, sometimes they can be cheaper, you are right but for example I can't find a 55-250mm Sigma lens for Canon, I can only find a 50-200mm, which costs as much as the 55-250mm canon lens.
The Sigma has better build quality and comes with a lens hood, if that's your thing. It really depends on whether you need that extra 50mm.

The Sigma is also apparently softer than the Canon, but my copy seems pretty sharp with a bit of post processing.
what lens is it?

maybe it's just low quality glass?
Wow the London riots spread to Ealing last night, I can't believe I missed one that was literally 5-10 minutes by bus from me!
Really tempted to go out tonight.

I'd suggest getting the AE-1 Program version because of the aperture priority but that's just my personal preference
whoops. it doesn't have aperture priority

god damn, I can't tell if it's the software I'm using or just the shitty computer, but it's taking forever to edit and convert these images.
anyway I did shoot last night but there were a lot of bright lights around so it looks like something out of a jj abrams movie.
Not sure if you guys already know about this, but if you want a quick and easy lens hood but don't want to buy an expensive canon/nikon/whatever official one, http://www.lenshoods.co.uk/. Bam.

Sorry to hear that :(
Went to another photocall today. Alexander McCall Smith was doing stuff with some actors. Never has my SLR penis felt so small. Around 15 other photographers there, don't know anything about the Nikon side, but the Canon Crew all had 70-200's, 24-70's - external flashes, 1D's - it was camera sex. I was stood there with my 18-55, 1000D and a rubber lens hood. FML.
