I personally have not shot with either but I would think the Canon would be sharper just because it's more name brand, but it's perfectly plausible that the Sigma is sharper.
And what kind of lenses are they? It mostly depends on the adapter you use, as the ones with glass elements heavily degrade image quality.
Tricked into going to an "advanced" talk on photo editing, BUT IT WAS FOR BEGINNERS. I was told it would pick up near the end.
Made mulled wine to sooth my anger. :v:

I used shitty wine but I fixed it.
Thanks for the tip!
I read around a bit and I heard that the Sigma is the preferred one due to it being more sharp as well. Is that true?
[editline]8th October 2011[/editline]
I have an additional question: I have quite a few analog lenses laying around that are not compatible with my 550D, but could you perhaps convert them somehow so they fit, should I just sell them?
I have the sigma 30mm f1.4 and it is a good lens. At f1.4 wide-open it's decently sharp and from f2 and up it's greaaaaaaat. I really like mine so I suggest you get it instead of the canon 50mm f1.4
At crop 1.6 30 mm looks much more natural than 50mm if you ask me. So for portrait and wide angle I would totally go for the 30 mm if you ask me.
Thanks guys, I really appreciate your input. I will most definitely purchase the Sigma 30mm instead of the Canon 50mm. I won't be getting a new house, or a full-frame house in a long time anyway, so.

Oh and if anyone could answer this it would be great:

Full frame, not full crop, ;).
And I dunno about the analog lenses.

what lenses are they? what do they say on the front?

I'll write them up in a while

I believe you would need an adapter for that. I assume you have some old FD lenses? There are some adapters so you can use your fd lenses on a digital ef-mount body but they come with several disadvantages: No focus to infinity, closed-aperture metering, no autofocus. So possible, but not something you would use a lot.
Okay. Three Konica lenses.

I'd just keep them honestly. You aren't going to get a lot if you sell them (probably like 30 each if they are in mint quality). Plus you might get into film photography, and they would be fun to use for that. You would need a converter with a glass element to adapt them to your camera, which would degrade image quality significantly.
Alright, but I probably will sell them if I do get a nice price, you never know.
If someone gives you a good offer then yeah I'd say sell them if you never plan to use them.
First proper camera, a NIKON D3100 is coming tomorrow :D Won't have much of a chance to use it after 6th form tomorrow, but should be able to have a good go at getting round it Tuesday, provided I get this geology essay done today....
I'm going to read over the advice threads here tonight, any other general advice for someone practically completely new to DSLRs? It will only have a kit lense and stuff atm, as it was a gift from my mum's company, but if I get into it enough I'll probably get some better ones with any money I get for my birthday.
just got back from walpole, where I went for the weekend, they had trees like this

I should have some shots to upload tomorrow or Tuesday.
Spent £39 on a polariser from Jessops. Jessops are expensive.
I spent £8.99 on a torch from maplin, be proud bengley
Spent £39 on a polariser from Jessops. Jessops are expensive.
from what I hear polarizers are worth their money, cheaper ones often cause haze, vignette, or discoloration
I've got a handful of old and cheap ones that came attached to bargain lenses, it's pretty noticeable looking at them that some give a weird lime green tint, others purple, one sky blue. It's faint, but held next to each other it's pretty obvious

So how do i develop this? I only need to take the film out of the canister right?
well, it looks pretty flimsy, and looks like the stuff inside a floppy disk, so maybe put it in your floppy drive??
Just had a serious jack off session with a friend, about the D800 rumours.

No way? I've been jerking myself endlessly in a corner ever since you brought up the rumors in the other thread.
That new Sony A77 looks brilliant as well but I don't get what Sony's problem is with optical viewfinders
I hope you're trying to be funny.
I think I noticed him talking in chat about the leader getting lost inside the roll and couldn't recover it, so it was counted as a loss and therefore taken apart as a learning experience

But leaders can easily be recovered :v:
That new Sony A77 looks brilliant as well but I don't get what Sony's problem is with optical viewfinders
Sony uses a translucent mirror technology which means they don't need a flipping mirror, but it would make an optical viewfinder realllllllllly dark.
Also I looked at DigitalRev's A77 video, and noticed something awful:

That looks absolutely horrendous.
But leaders can easily be recovered :v:
also heard mention of the store having tools to recover it but couldn't for some reason
it's just a roll of fujicolor from the looks of it, dime-a-dozen junk. I wouldn't mind ripping one apart just to play with it, heh
