Once I start talking to someone, we normally get to be good friends and whatnot, but it's that first dive in that gets me. I guess it's just a matter of "hold your breath and go for it"

And I'm sure a random guy saying "hey you're cute" wouldn't end very well.

exactly how i fucking feel, i wish i had the charisma just to ask "hey what's up? we should totally talk more" or some shit like that. There's some cute senior in a play that I'm doing technical shit for that I need an excuse to talk to. I guess my excuse is that my friend placed a bet to see if i could get with her, but that's definitely not how you start a conversation with someone lol.

I tried to talk to a totally random girl for no reason and with no excuse as to why I'm talking to her but it just went awkward really fast. So clearly you do need a reason to talk to them or else it won't go anywhere.

Not having a chance at that point in time does not equate you never having a chance ever. You're limiting yourself. You abandon those self degrading "hurr im gun act autism :c' thoughts, and everything just kind of comes together. The common area might be a good place to actually introduce ourself to people and make friends. It won't be too hard considering how people go there to socialize because if they just wanted to be alone, they'd lock themselves in their dorm. Just smile as you pass people in the hall or wave or acknowledge them. Putting out a friendly image does wonders too. It's what I do. I smile at anyone I make eye contact with and for the most part, receive one back.
