It's not a very American thing to think about, but friends can do what you described too. It's just easier with a girl, doubled by the fact it's more socially acceptable here to be closer to your girlfriend than your friends. I don't really know how to articulate this, but a friendgirl doesn't need to turn into a girlfriend for it to suddenly become special.

I went as 75th rangers and I got asked by 34 people (our town is super busy on hallows'een) if I was "Army" or "soldier", two people asked if I was from Black Ops II, then just the normal Black Ops, and another asked if I was from Desert Storm (closest, gave him a satisfactory nod), and a guy I know dressed up as a school girl and had fake boobs that felt real weird.
