I crossed the south pacific in a 45ft sailboat. Ask me anything.

Do your parents speak any other languages, or did all the places you dock/land have people who spoke English?
Also a question I'm surprised that hasn't been asking.
What's the name of the boat? Not the model, the name.
I want to do this so goddamn badly. So badly.
How'd you plan the route? Where'd you get access to a sailboat? Did you buy it, rent it, borrow it, inherit it? How much did the trip cost, as far as supplies, planning, and lodging go? Did you have any supply issues with fresh water and food? How much was needed to keep a family alive for 23 days at sea, or did you just resupply at ports along the way?
Jeez, just tell me everything I need to know to plan this sort of adventure myself, please. This is, like, a dream of mine. A dream.
I'm looking up sailboat prices, and the average for ships around this size appear to be about fifty grand. If people can dump that much into a car, I can definitely drop it on a sailboat. Because, dude, it's a sailboat. How badass is that? Eventually, man. Wasn't there some dude on YouTube who kept releasing videos asking for a million dollars, and in the end he finally got it? Maybe I could do something like that, only instead of asking for a million bucks, I just ask for a sailboat and some travelin' funds. I don't know how many YouTubers have sailboats, though.

Well it's about fucking time they made you mod.

When did that happen?
So does somebody always have to be at the controls, or do you anchor at night for sleep? This is probably a dumb question, but I've never been on a boat! I don't know proper boat customs.
Yes. There is someone at the controls at all times. We have an auto pilot, so we don't really have to do anything. Someone just needs to be there to adjust the sails or take action if something goes wrong with the autopilot, or if we run into a squall. It would be kind of hard to anchor in 2 miles of water, don't you think? :P
During the day, usually everyone is awake, but at night everyone but one person sleeps. We take shifts at night.
My mom does 6-9pm, I do 9-midnight, my dad does midnight-3, and our friend John does 3-6am.

If you end up getting your sailboat and money from a random investor, take me with you. I'm totally useless and everything I know about sailing was learned from playing Wind Waker but at the very least an extra person will make your voyage look more professional.

My mom is full-blown french, my dad is american bute speaks fluent french. They speak some spanish too. I speak semi-fluent french and some spanish.
As for the name of the boat, I'm sorry, but I'd rather not say.
What did you do on the sailboat to help its course, if you did anything at all :O ?
What did you eat?
and
When you do eat, sit down and what not. Is it shaky and annoying and stuff? I imagine the sailboat always rocking back and forth.
ninja edit:
do you have power on the sailboat and how is it provided?
Is it such a name that you got a greater discount, including the fact that it was used?
was it scary?

All this info is already written above, but I'll be nice and write it again.
We have a GPS, electronic charts, and an autopilot.
We stocked up on tons of food before we left.
It's usually calm enough to eat.
We have 5 truck batteries on board, an AC outlet system, 10 sq ft of solar panels, and a generator.

It's not that it's a bad name, we named it ourselves. It's just I don't want people going and finding our blog and trolling it, etc.
was it scary?
Nah. Not really. Not for me at least, I'm used to sailing.
You say you've been doing this most of your life, right?
Have you ever thought of bringing a volleyball on board?
Maybe naming it...and painting it's face...I know I would.

Dumb reference to the movie "cast away".
Did you see the Kraken, and did you fight it?

Yeah. I ripped its tentacles off and force-fed them to it.
It's nice to have knick-knacks bart!

I'll come too. Facepunch Trans-Pacific Voyage 2012.
We're all gonna die.
Holy shit OP
How expensive is it to do a trip like this? I assume you'd need a boat that can hold its own in ocean waters versus a boat designed to be kept within sight of the shoreline.
Not gonna lie, your family sounds rich as fuck to do a trip like this :v:
EDIT: I realize you said it cost about $4000 to do the trip, not including the sail boat cost.
I imagine if you rented your own boat it would probably be double that. Which is a small price to pay for a lifetime adventure.

It's not the size of the boat, its the Captain. People have crossed the Pacific in specially designed row boats.

Thanks I can finally go to the sea without getting eaten.

You guys would sink the boat before it's even built. :v:

How exactly do you autopilot a sail?

I've been trying to figure out a very basic budget, and, so far as I can tell, yes: you'd have to be pretty well-off to afford this trip. You gotta figure, not only would you have to buy the boat and supplies and all that trip-related mumbo jumbo, you'd also had to take time off work and still be able to pay all the bills back home while you were away.
That's a bit more cash than I've got squirreled away, to say the least, but good on them! I hope I'm wealthy enough to throw everything aside and go on big-ass adventures when I'm older!

You don't have to be rich to do it. In fact, there are lots of people called "Cruising bums".
I forgot to mention we are renting out our house while we're gone, so it brings in about $4,000 a month.
How exactly do you autopilot a sail?
I'd assume the sail is on an electric motor and it follows a predestined route using GPS and a fancy weather vane.

Built? I would be surprised if FP actually built a boat.

OvB is the swarthiest sea captain Facepunch has to offer. OvB, if you haven't already, make sure that you grow an appropriate beard before our voyage. Zeke, it's cool if you don't, because all I'd really expect from you is clever wisecracks about hoisting the sails.
