I crossed the south pacific in a 45ft sailboat. Ask me anything.
How exactly do you autopilot a sail?
You don't. The autopilot steers the rudder to keep it on course, us humans adjust the sails.
You don't have to be rich to do it. In fact, there are lots of people called "Cruising bums".
I forgot to mention we are renting out our house while we're gone, so it brings in about $4,000 a month.
how does it feel that some one slept in your bed
The thing I've always wondered is what you do when you enter a busy port? Do you just go in and find a dock somewhere or do you have to radio into some harbor office or something? Of course the bigger the ship the harder it is to dock. I know large cargo vessels and cruise ships require a port pilot to come aboard and dock it.

We'll have a farewell post prepared and a script set to autopost it if we don't make it in time.

Not that bad, since they wouldn't be the first other people to sleep in my bed. :smug:

Please tell me more about cruising bums, and please try to avoid any clever wisecracks about hoisting the sails.
I've been trying to figure out a very basic budget, and, so far as I can tell, yes: they'd have to be pretty well-off to afford this trip. You gotta figure, not only did they have to buy the boat and supplies and all that trip-related mumbo jumbo, they all also had to take time off work and still be able to pay all the bills back home while they were away.
That's a bit more cash than I've got squirreled away, to say the least, but good on them! I hope I'm wealthy enough to throw everything aside and go on big-ass adventures when I'm older!
There's plenty of ways to have similar adventure without requring you to cross the ocean. Honestly, it doesn't sound like its particarly more challenging to do versus any other kind of sailing. The difference is you are legit on a boat for 20 days at a time versus not. Most of the time spent in the boat is spent doing what you might to in an RV.
So basically, it sounds like this is pretty much "Ocean RV'ing". Which is still pretty awesome. I want to be able to see thousands of stars :(
One of my dream trips is to do a week or two long Kayak trip in Alaska or something. Or a big giant road trip around the country. I've done a 60 mile kayak trip in tenneesee and despite being swampy half the time it was definatly an experience I won't forget soon. The best part about it is that Kayaks are super cheap to maintain, you can rent them anywhere and if you want to buy them it'll just set you back about $1k or so.

Generally we enter the port, either anchor or tie up if there's a wharf or dock available, and if we came from a different country beforehand, we have to go to the port captain or police to get our papers/passports checked.

I suppose that's true, which means the biggest expense would be getting a boat. That's kind of where I'm stuck right now.

The thing that makes ocean going trips exiting to me is the danger potential. RV's don't sink and leave you stranded 3000 miles from civilization in all directions.

Cruising bums are basically people who live life cheap, live strictly on their boat, and don't spend much on food, electronics, fixing their boat, etc. I really don't know how to describe them.
Aw shit is sailing in real life like the movie Waterworld?
I'll come too
Gold members only. We have all the necessary training.
OP do you think turkey and mayonaise sandwhiches are nice
Gold members only. We have all the necessary training.
Yeah. Eat, sleep, repeat.

Okay lets set sail next year (I'll be Gold)

So there's still that whole, "buying a boat" thing to deal with, huh?
Well. I can deal with that. Forget fancy cars and nice houses, I want to live out of a boat. How much does it cost to keep your boat in port back home, per month?
OP do you think turkey and mayonaise sandwhiches are nice
sweeeet, agree from OP, yeah they are pretty nice

Used ones don't seem to be more than an average car. I'm sure they'll require some fixing before you wanna take it out on the high seas.

Well... It really depends on the marina and the location. I don't know how much it costs though. Sorry.
You're strong. I honestly couldn't stand being with my family for that long, and in such a small area.
Sounds like a good experience though, just be grateful for it and thank your parents.

Yeah, I've been browsing that site and wondering exactly how lavish a boat I would need.
I've decided: extremely lavish.
I want one of those double-hulled wide boats with gigantic party decks.
OP did you ever drink piss Bear Grylss style

You could have rented the Ocean Adventurer 7 but that's currently owned by Sea Shepherd. Seeing what happened to their last record breaking trimaran, it's probably going to "retire" as a Sea Shepherd vessel.

Ok I am so fucking happy right now. The boat that my girlfriend is on just called on the shortwave, they said they will arrive where I am tomorrow at noon. That means I won't be leaving for another few days, and I'll get to see my girl :buddy:
Her family is doing pretty much the same thing.

I actually know 5 boats as friends in the area I'm in, but there are probably 50 boats doing this.
