I think we need this specific amendment passed
[editline]16th December 2011[/editline]
fuck
8-21?
Well this sure is a beautiful insight on how well the us government doesn't represent its citizens.
In denial of the AMENDMENT, not the bill.
Think I'll play NightSky while I wait for the final vote on the bill.
8-21?
You had me excited there for a moment.
I notice there are a lot of poeple not voting at all. Maybe they don't care about the amendment-votes because they're voting no in the final verdict anyways.
I'm still mad at Berman thinking Al Gore made the internet. :suicide:
Wasn't someone saying Obama can veto the bill or something?
How does that all work again?
Wasn't someone saying Obama can veto the bill or something?

As I understand it, he can either veto it directly once it comes to his office, thusly it wont become law. He can also choose to pocket veto it, leaving it for several days and thus the same thing happens, except it can't be overriden like a normal veto can.
So if Brobama comes through, if the bill winds up on his desk, he can stop it and no more SOPA?

Yeah, though congress can override it with a 2/3 vote, unless he pocket vetos it. If he does that, it can't be overriden, even with a 2/3 majority. Though, if it gets overriden, the Supreme Court will most likely throw this out of the window so fast it'll disintegrate on the way out.

For like, the 5th fucking time, Congress can override a Presidential Veto.
As well as what the guy above me said.

Alright, thanks for the info.
You are a very knowledgeable fox.
How will SOPA affect people outside of the US?
How will SOPA affect people outside of the US?
As far as I understand, it wont.

What's to say other countries won't follow suit with similar laws since the big cheese has placed it?
How will SOPA affect people outside of the US?
It will make other countries think its a good idea, this is a matter for most members of the interwebs
Posting from university.
How long is this recess?

Plenty of countries have struck down filtering for ISPs and the like.

I think it'll be a few hours. Probably two. Don't hold me to that, though.

Yeah but if this bill passes, it might persuade some retards to use it as an example and retry to pass bills, laws, etc.

I sincerely doubt it, plenty of anti piracy laws have already been introduced and so on, countries in Europe usually also have a good eye on such things. Still, I am fairly certain this will get veto'd or thrown out by the SC, so I am not really worrying too much about it passing.
That, and the 'private right of action' stuff is, if I'm not mistaken, supposed to influence countries other than the US.

Fuck it, I'm skipping some classes later.
So... What's gone on since yesterday? Can I get a little overview?
Why not read? Everyone asks the same damned questions over and over without checking to see if it was answered like a page back, multiple times.
I think they're just talking about amendments to the bill right now. Then, after that's sorted, they'll vote on whether or not to pass the bill itself.
For those of you (In the UK) saying about how this sets a dangerous precedent...
Try visiting newzbin.
It's already here.

You're lucky. Australians have somewhat more retarded people who are trying to pass the ACMA, a national censorship program designed to filter ISPs for the government's needs (Caused quite the uproar, delayed till at least mid 2013 thank god) which bullshit politicians are trying to blacklist just about anything that peeves them. Refused classification movies/games, online poker sites, porn sites, euthanasia (Seriously what the fuck), Christian sites, and pretty much anything could be included on the list. I assure you this bill will pop up next year, and it will be our SOPA.
