Seems like its actually starting now
if they hate piracy so mush, why not just shut down the internet
if they hate piracy so mush, why not just shut down the internet
Not too far off from what they're doing, do be honest.
It's starting. Also, epic little side story. My professor is a total liberal bro, and he just gave me the key to the school's computer lab, telling me SOPA/PIPA are awful ideas, and telling me to miss my next two classes. I am now sitting here, in the dark, no proxies, on some new iMac, furiously tweeting and watching the committee. I feel like a ~1337 hack3R~
Yessss go chairman!!
Holy shit Ms. Lofgren

Ghosts. Those "balls of light" are dust, how does anyone not figure this out?
Suddenly balls of light... Then, hoc_input failure. ; _ ;
OH, I understand now. That's not an actual streaming, it's a livestream of the Biography channel.
Ghosts. Those "balls of light" are dust, how does anyone not figure this out?
"Wow, this dust particle looks like something paranormal! I wonder if Discovery will take a look at this. Hmm..." And then:
wow.
I'm being satirical of course, but I am infact in here, calling a bunch of reps.d Also, a science prof at my school is on our radio station ranting about SOPA and the administration has no qualms. The station has gotten ~80+ anti-SOPA texts and we've gotten #STOPSOPA trending locally.

Ms Lofgren, Hello, just a random internet user here. I’ve been watching the stream with eagle eyes since yesterday. I’m just a guy from one of a multitude of online communities. People from around the world have been watching the SOPA debate, not only US citizens, but citizens from a plethora of other nations. It is obvious why American citizens would choose to watch this debate. However, why would those hailing from other countries decide to watch the debate? The answer is simple: America is one of the most influential countries in the world. If America is to do something, then it is not a stretch to believe that other countries will follow. It is especially worrying when such a bill as SOPA is at stake here. I could not conjure the words to explain my hate for SOPA. I’ll have to do my best. To me, SOPA is a festering amalgamation of treason that blatantly violates human rights. It is disgusting that so many congressmen have had their pockets filled by corporations to support this bill. Now, I could go on with what is wrong with SOPA, but I shall do that later in this letter. Watching the stream was a painful experience. I mean that with all my essence. It was painful to watch the debate. I almost wanted to cry. It was that bad. It was so obvious that many of the congressmen had been bribed to support SOPA. That is not the part that hurt the most. The worst part was the sheer idiocy expressed by a majority of the congress. They had no idea how the internet worked. I found the ad hominem used by some of them to be downright awful. Yesterday, someone brought up the notion that the internet could be likened to uranium. It could be used for energy or weapons. He said that the internet could be used for good or for bad things like pornography. I’m going to have to stop right here and address this alone. I’m a teenage male, and like many other people my age I look at porn. That’s a shocker. Objectively, there is nothing wrong with porn. I’m not going to ramble on about pornography for too long, but if he thinks pornography is one of the biggest blights on the internet, then we have a problem. Straying away from talk of pornography, I’d like to get back to the sheer ignorance displayed by congress. However, before this can be done, I would like to praise you. Watching the stream yesterday was an incredibly nauseating experience. I could not believe the hypocrisy and idiocy displayed by congress. There came a glimmer of hope. That glimmer of hope was you. You objected to various parts of this bill. You brought to the table letters sent in to you by various experts on the architecture of the internet. You took the time to think things through for yourself. You did what was right. You did what the others didn’t. You took into consideration all the letters sent in to you by hundreds upon hundreds of people. The founding fathers may be rolling over in their graves because of the actions of other members of congress, but they are smiling because of you. The most important thing that you did was sadly being a representative for your people. I can guarantee you that thousands of people sent in letters to their congressmen only to be ignored. The popular internet browser, Mozilla Firefox, has millions of users. They displayed on their site a message urging people to send letters to their congressmen. It doesn’t take a nuclear physicist to figure out that people did. Sadly, these people were ignored. I cannot thank you enough for what you have done for the internet as a whole. You brought facts to the table. I almost died of a mixture of laughter and tears when a congressman brought up child pornography on the internet. Why is this hilarious? It is because that the only place that you would find that abhorrent filth is on the deepweb. Now, what would people have to resort to using to visit some of the favorite sites if SOPA passed? Oh wait, they would have to possibly use the deepweb. Causing more people to use the deepweb seems a bit detrimental to the cause of fighting child pornography, since you’re throwing thousands of more people in the deepweb who might stumble upon it. SOPA would also do next to nothing with things like Silk Road. The only “bad” thing that SOPA aims to stop is piracy. On the subject of piracy, it is impossible to stop. If you were somehow able to stop every American from pirating, then we would still end up with bootleg versions of things in a different way. It would just cause more trafficking of bootlegged products in the long run. It’s silly to even attempt to stop piracy. The American people are not stupid. We are innovators and inventors. If someone wanted to come up with a new way to breathe life into piracy again, then they would able to. Now, yesterday a congressman brought up the misconception of a small business making a movie, book, or song and it being ruined thanks to piracy. They obviously have no idea how things spread on the internet. Things can become sensational on the internet thanks to them being spread on sites like facebook, reddit, and youtube. All of these sites would be harmed greatly by SOPA. Take the terrible song “Friday” for example. It became a “hit” in its own way thanks to youtube. Millions of people viewed it and it spread by wildfire. If anything, a product being spread like that is a good thing. It is highly unlikely that something would spread with this much success on a site like The Pirate Bay. People have the misconception that pirates are a loss of sale. The fact of the matter is that pirates wouldn’t pay for a product anyways. If your product explodes on TPB, then I can guarantee that it will do the same on Reddit ten thousand fold. I agree that piracy is bad, but the government is going at it the wrong way and bending to the will of media corporations. Another “point” that was repeatedly brought up was “jobs.” This is a pathetic excuse. A few thousand “jobs” in the media business hold no ground against the millions of jobs on the internet that would be lost. It is silly that congress would choose to harm many features on the internet which they even use. By passing SOPA congress would be hurting Google. I can say without a doubt that many of the people in congress use Gmail. Wikipedia could face heavy fire under this bill as well. All the sites that we have come to love on the internet would be in trouble. This bill is a catastrophe. I cannot take the “jobs” excuse seriously when so many more would be lost thanks to this bill. It sickens me that America, a beacon of freedom and personal liberties to the rest of the world, will not be able to freely express itself under the SOPA bill on popular sites like facebook. Simply recording a video of yourself singing your favorite song and uploading it to youtube could put you in serious legal trouble. How can America, which parades its freedoms, allow this to happen if one cannot even freely exercise their freedoms of speech and expression on the internet. SOPA is not even being reported on by major news corporation. It has had next to no coverage by the media. How could such a blatant violation of human rights be passing before our very eyes with almost all of America oblivious? By the time that the majority of Americans figure this out, I fear it will be too late. I commend you for doing your best to fight for the freedom of those everywhere. Your resolve to fight for what is truly right is heartwarming. You are a true American. I have the upmost and sincerest respect for you. You chose what is right over popular opinion in congress. Even if this abomination passes, we of the internet will look back at you. You fought for us. I cannot thank you enough for all that you have done in the last two days alone. For the remaining duration of this debate, know that we Facepunchers, Redditers, Facebookers, 4chan users, Youtubers, and all of the people of the internet will be right behind you. Good Luck, Matthew
Wow, you're a quick writer. Nice.
Reading the EFF Live Tweets What just happened: They are going to meet up next year to continue all of this instead of their attempted push through
Reading the EFF Live Tweets What just happened: They are going to meet up next year to continue all of this instead of their attempted push through
They knew that would happen anyways, they said that many times already.
Reading the EFF Live Tweets What just happened: They are going to meet up next year to continue all of this instead of their attempted push through
Now we have time to let he government know how much we detest this bill.
Wow what it's not gonna be discussed again 'til next year? Oh wow that's cool
