This threads title is shit. "Fate of the internet" should be "Fate of Congress".
We already know SOPA is stupid.
well, we all know what cancer is, why raise awareness right? also something completely different: Is it just me, or is this act just to give more power to the bigger corporations? Government my ass, today its the fat cats who control the world, so I guess they'll only show us what they want us to see, like TV or Radio or Newspapers. Or maybe I'm being paranoid
I don't get why people keep spamming to get ME to contact my local senator/congress representative. I'm fucking Danish, i have none!? What can i do? They want a good life and don't give a shit about us. This is one of their attempts to achieve such.
So if that's true, then we're fucked and there's nothing we can do about it?
There is plenty we can do about it. We elect these officials. People need to do research and kick out leaders that support and/or sponsor this bill. Then someone needs to step up that will pass an amendment to protect the internet so they can't try this shit again. [editline]18th January 2012[/editline]
Why isn't Facepunch blacking out like the rest of the cool sites?
Because it's not run in the US and it is somewhat preaching to the choir although I agree that it is good to raise awareness. [editline]18th January 2012[/editline] My question is why isn't facebook or youtube participating? I feel like these bills are going to end up screwing them over just as badly and they have the power to make quite the influence
Damn, I didn't even realize that Wikipedia was blacked out because I have NoScript on my browser. I feel like I've cheated.

i haven't really been able to keep up with this as much as i should have, but for the sake of augument, Lets say, if this does get fully passed everyone says yes and everything. what would it effect? or rather, how big would the effects be? and the other thing i want to know is (again because i havn't been able to keep up with this with a lack of internet) would this be like, say China's internet per say? (sorry for spelling mistakes, writing from a ps3 is a bitch)
I was wondering if anyone would see this. Guess they haven't. the Humble Bundle guys went dark with some java (or is it WebGL?) script. www.humblebundle.com
Wolfire (people who made Overgrowth) also went dark, using that same thing.
Will SOPA allow them to shut down websites hosted outside of the US?
Thought someone might find this cool or interesting, I liked what he said. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BIRKkfglPmg&feature=g-u-u&context=G23726acFUAAAAAAAKAA
I'm not sure if the message is coming across too clearly..
Damn, I didn't even realize that Wikipedia was blacked out because I have NoScript on my browser. I feel like I've cheated.
Don't feel like that. They just did it so you can see the SOPA message. They even tell you how to disable the blackout thing. And that's what every website should do.
I'm not sure if the message is coming across too clearly..
Someone should tell that kid that Obama opposes the bill
Well, there was a piece aired on the CBS nightly news (With Tom Brokaw) that discussed SOPA. For all of two and a half minutes. Still, these protests have raised enough awareness that that happened. And it probably won't matter. Because of that Child Pornography bill.
I'm not sure if the message is coming across too clearly..
What do you mean, haven't you heard? Everything the Government does is Obama's fault, even if he's against it.
It was interesting seeing all the blackouts today. I hope nearly everyone knows about this threat now.
Someone should tell that kid that Obama opposes the bill
I would but I usually avoid contacting him in any way after he became extremely over-protective of his girlfriend and threatened me...causing her to break up with him. I don't really know why I'm still "friends" with him. Maybe so I can laugh at stuff like that. [editline]18th January 2012[/editline] also, I live in Alabama, so that will give you an idea of why so many people liked it.
I know this is an odd place to start posting, but hey, I've been a long-time lurker here at facepunch and I think it's time for me to start! Have you guys called your senators/congresspeople to voice your feelings about the bill? I just did and it felt great. Wikipedia's front page makes it easy to find out their numbers. I called a bunch from my home state of California, reaching 3 interns who said they would let the respective senators and congresspeople know about my opposition to the bills (undoubtedly they have been busily keeping tallies and answering phones non-stop due to the internet blackout today, poor souls), and actually reached one congressman in person who replied that he was opposed to both SOPA/PIPA (nice!) It's a lot harder to ignore a live phone call than it is to ignore a signed petition or email, so I strongly encourage you all to support internet freedom by calling sometime. I was on YouTube, and I found out how to make Sopa.
I was on YouTube, and I found out how to make Sopa.
Ingredients: 1 cup BLOCK YOUTUBE 2 cups BLOCK PORN sites
Ingredients: 1 cup BLOCK YOUTUBE 2 cups BLOCK PORN sites
And cook at 450 protest until nice and soft
We can all complain about SOPA and yell at our congressmen, but truth is, we're screwed either way. Congress usually decides on things without caring what the citizens say, and they're going to do it again. There's a reason their approval rate is almost 10%. Common sense isn't common there, the votes depend on who proposed/opposes them and who controls the house.
If this passes I will lose the last little bit of faith I have left in humanity.

SOPA protests are apparently taking place on streets in New York City, though I have no proof of this other than some scrolling text at the bottom of a newscast, so it may be smaller scale than that initially sounds.

I wish I could do a lot more, but I am from Austria. Any idea on how to help in this fight?
