Apart from these concepts here, but yeah
None of these concepts are new. Space elevators and a launcher have been tossed around for a long time.
All the payload cannons remind me of
Would be neat if eezo was an actual element.
I remember reading somewhere that anything launched through the Verne Gun would be flattened to at least half its size.

in real life. No, really, there's a company called Orbital Outfitters spearheaded by a NASA doctor who lost his wife in the Columbia incident and the designer of the spacesuits from the movie Armageddon. Their goal is not only to create the safety feature/extreme sport of the future, but to do so in style.
The artist's work:

Divers would go through every stage of reentry: maneuvering in orbit, accelerating to nearly Mach four in the upper atmosphere, decelerating to 120 MPH and becoming a fireball, free-falling for a solid seven minutes, and then gently landing. Amazingly, this is all still less than what a fighter pilot goes through in terms of G-forces (I'm guessing that's because it's in a straight line).
This is the annotated sketch of the actual suit.

The forces involved are a bit... extreme o_O
Old news, but nevertheless remains some of the coolest I've heard.
OP should include Project Valkyrie.
He had that in another thread, as far as I know. He's basicly the king of futuristic space stuff in GD :v:
And OP, you should also consider solutions like spaceplanes :v:
[editline]04:03PM[/editline]
(not all of the new spaceplane designs are rockets )

Did you know there are people living in space right now?

Pretty spaceships :downs:

Did it in other threads, it's not for surface to orbit.
That is, unless the plants can survive a gamma ray flare as bright as a supernova.
*applause* isn't someone a genious
Yeah, I'm stupid for raising the thought of people currently living hundreds of kilometres above your head right this second.
Also, good job spelling genius.

I envy them :frown:
But, seriously, LEO is not that badass.
The Moon, maybe. Mars is cool too.

Gotta start somewhere.
Gotta start somewhere.
We've had technology to go to Mars since the 80's, even prior to that.

LEO would be more badass if we were up there on a larger scale.

You called?
Seriously, now, being a solid, rigid object, it wouldn't really be orbiting. It would eventually drift and crash.
I thought of space elevators on civilization 4 and i always thought they were for people.\
Did you know there are people living in space right now?
I was thinking... Does it really count as space when they're so close there's atmospheric drag?
I mean, the fucking resupply shuttle has to push it just a wee bit upward every mission. Otherwise it would just fall and burn.

Hmm.
I dunno. How about "the edge of space"?
wouldn't space debris just bomb down that station
OP is pretty much hung up on how bad rockets are and for some reason has repeated orgasms over the Valkyrie even though it's never existed and is hugely impractical.

That's going to happen no matter where you put the station unless you put it outside of Earth's gravity well, which, we currently don't have the time or money to do. Or the technology to do it well.

Well, if you put it in high orbit you won't have drag. Just natural orbital decay but that is to be expected.
Yeah, I'm stupid for raising the thought of people currently living hundreds of kilometres above your head right this second.
Well done, but guess what, we already knew that.

Sometimes you need to be reminded of some things, as food for thought.
YOU ARE ON A ROCK FLOATING THROUGH SPACE
