Just listened to it, and it really does sound like everyone but thom had no input and just turned up to record it
[editline]23rd February 2013[/editline]
Not that that's a bad thing. It sounds pretty good
band shoulda been called "Thom Yorke's Atoms for Peace" :v:
Yeah I can't say I don't enjoy it but people like Flea generally have a noticeable impact on stuff and I didn't feel him at all here
hmm, kind of obsessed with the nick cave record, just such a lush album. haven't heard a single thing by them, kind of ashamed i haven't.
I think i'll work backwards through their catalogue. :v:
Listen to Dig Lazarus Dig first
Also I feel like Atoms for Peace will generally translate better live in regards to the other band members.
Listen to Dig Lazarus Dig first.
Yeah kind of the idea of going backwards!
just listened to it, fantastic record. VERY different to the new one though, so I kind of get why a couple folk weren't digging push the sky away.
Nick Cave has a great voice, it's like a more punkish Leonard Cohen. :v:
He's a dirty old man though
Dig Lazarus Dig sold so high in aus, we're proud of our nick even if he doesn't live here now

Haven't listened to it completely yet, but from what I've heard its pretty good.
I won't compare it to his other stuff because i'm bad at that
The next day is a pretty rockin album. Mostly guitar based, if not entirely, but a lot of the tracks are heavy rockers. Tasteful brass here and there which is nice, track 2 especially. It's also quite nostalgic, which is quite ironic considering the title of the album being so forward looking. Then again, irony is something that is really to be expected from Bowie. There are a lot of references to past albums - I know the guardian review said it was a big callback to the Lodger, but I hear some Scary Monsters in there and even some krautrock trilogy stuff in the last track.
Overall though, there are no songs that really call out to be remembered as the same class stuff like Sound and Vision or Life on Mars (which are personal favourites) - The stars are out tonight is probably the most catchy. Having said that, if things continue in this fashion for future albums, we might be onto another string of classics from older Bowie, I remain hopeful
Overall, its a great album - not a classic, but it's tight and sounds like Bowie. And with 10 years since his last release, that's more than enough to please. I like it and I'm probably gonna buy it and you should too!
Just as a point of comparison I read in a review of it that it's more comparable to the stars are out tonight - definitely true. Upbeat album. Love is Lost is maybe my favourite

should try
should try
I'm not familiar enough with his other stuff so I don't want to go around making big statements, mostly just his kraut trilogy and Hunky Dory and it sounds like neither of them particularly, and it doesnt sound glam either
if I had to chalk it up to something, maybe the Lodger and Station to Station most of all, but it seems to take influence from all of his albums in little chunks and turn it into something different

yeah since the 90s he's steered far away from his glam stuff.
you heard Heathen?
[editline]1st March 2013[/editline]
it's kind of Eno-esque actually.
New Boris album in 3 days.
Hype.
SHIT WHAT
I forgot
Vinyl only release tho.
They've said it's gonna be more experimental, which means it should be pretty different to the last 3
Maybe I'll wait to pick it up until May when I see them. Gonna see them four times in one week...
I'll have to hope they do a Birmingham show again this year. I missed their UK shows last year
Vinyl only release tho.
vinyl transfers that are good are worthwhile.
if the band wanted it to be heard digitally they would have given you a 24bit flac download. its against the band to not listen to their vinyl. its against everything they stand for.

i've lost the will to care about the format, if they intended me to hear an album on cassette, I'd still get myself a cassette recording and if not, buy the cassette and make my own digital recording.
I'm not against the band releasing records only on LP, it's their preferred format and I know full well that people sometimes put a lot of effort in transferring analogue audio to digital formats (don't care if it's 24bit either).

This sounds very pompous
