It's not. For YEARS this has been brought up on forums at least 40,000 times, and each time you get a rally of people crying about freedom of speech and all of that bullshit.
So, in summary: American government thinks they will be able to censor the internet, the bill will never pass, communities are throwing fits about how America is loosing its already non-existent freedom, etc. etc.
Oh no, I meant when is the hearing or whatever going on, I know it's today but is there a time frame?
This is bad. Even non-US folks like me would suffer, if any site could get shut down by the US government or some big media company at will. I really wish I could sign the petition.
I'm glad y'all are so optimistic about it not getting passed though!
A friend sent me this:
http://www.change.org/petitions/stop-the-internet-control-bill-now
It's another petition, and I'm pretty sure it's for the same bill. May as well sign both if you can!
Oh look, this again. Sent the letter as always, but it'd be nice if the politicians would stop trying this stuff in the first place.
One of the few good things about the U.S. is the lack of censorship. I seriously hope that this is not passed.

We still shouldn't completely ignore it though. If we ignore it, less people would be there to oppose it. Therefore allowing that type of thing to actually pass.

Our government already forced non US based websites to give up their domains via contacting ICANN, even though the sites were outside US jurisdiction. The sad part is that because a lot of the main companies that control this stuff are US based, there's no real decentralized system for managing this, one subpoena to ICANN means the US government can take control of any .com domain.
I don't see what's so bad about censorship. Not only does it ensure that police can do their jobs effectively, it protects everyone else too. The only bad thing I can see about it is ████████████████ ████████ or maybe ██████ ████ ████████ ██████ ██████████ ████████.

Well, one benefit is protecting crucial information during wartime, but that doesn't happen very often.

I fixed your post for you. Thanks for cooperating!

I agree. We should totally [DATA EXPUNGED]
This won't be maybe passed, it shall NOT PASS!
I mean come on, the shit in that bill is so outrageous you might think they are joking.
But if against all odds it does pass, even though I am not american, I will be in shock. I mean shit, this bill breaks so many freedoms that even a generic facebook user could be sued and fined.
And god forbid it spreads to other countries.
A question to Americans, how come you have such people in power that are even allowed to suggest such laws?

Oh, and to protect undercover law enforcement agents.
What exactly gave them this the idea to create this specific bill in the first place? Was it some nonsense along the lines of "protecting our children from the internet"?

wouldn't put it past them
but it's probably the RIAA/MPAA whining at the government over piracy like they always do
I find it ironic where they said it was wrong to censor the internet in China, but they have a bill to do just that. Large companies seem to act like a bunch of little kids crying over the smallest thing.

People said the same thing when the Patriot Act was proposed.
Sent my token letters to my...Republican representatives.
Well, that was a waste of time. Fuck my state...
People said the same thing when the Patriot Act was proposed.
Speaking of the Patriot Act, many people still don't "get" that they're watching us either way. Every site you go on, every thing you download, etc. can easily be accessed. American ISP's, by law, have to store your search records for about 10 years (at least).
It won't pass.
It won't pass.
If people keep thinking that way, and do nothing, it probably will.
FUCK THE POLICE I DO WHAT I WANT
I am a bit uneducated when it comes to some parts of government, but how can they legally pass these bills with no one voting on them/endorsing them besides people in seats of power? its bullshit and total crap.
If people keep thinking that way, and do nothing, it probably will.
Freedom-fighter bullshit won't work. Look at what's going on in New York and the other "occupy" movements going on. Old women are getting pepper sprayed, yet you think a few people signing a petition will help. The government has, and will always do whatever the fuck it wants. "We the people" is a thing of the past. It's now "us the government" and "us the corporation."
Everyone assumes it's welfare programs, homeless, joblessness, cheap Chinese goods, Japanese cars, etc. that's fucking up America, wrong. America's biggest enemy is its own government.

No it's not the government itself. It's what's influencing the government. This sense of hyper-capitalism that's fueling major corporations is seeping into everything in the country, and it's killing it. Economically and socially.
AKA Take Your Freedom Day
Won't be long until postboxes are government monitored for "obscenity prevention purposes" and waste pipes are analysed individually for "health reasons" to check if we have been having fun in the "wrong way" over the weekend/all week by consuming "controlled" substances which are "evil" and "kill"
So are we doomed yet?
Goodbye freedom of speech.
don't forget freedom of action and ownership of ones own body too
