I don't even have a professional position like those people and even I have trouble dealing with friends who want me to promote their stuff on the rare occasion.

In all honesty if someone came up to me and told me they think this is a non-issue, while I wouldn't agree with them, I could see where they'd be coming from.

All of this is really unfortunate because I always felt that games like Depression Quest and Fez seemed like legitimately okay games that definitely fit a niche after I played them. I feel that if Fish and Quinn had never done any of the stuff they did, the games would have people looking at them without a bias as a result of the drama surrounding the authors.

Although it's nothing really life threatening or anything, the whole debacle has shown even further that gaming journalists are willing to mislead consumers on another level where there isn't even that large of a monetary gain to encourage the journalist. The cronyism involved in the situation also affects the ability of indie developers to compete in the market, as there is a strong connection between a relationship with a gaming journalist, and the coverage that the game receives, which is very important in determining the potential sales a game could generate. So yeah, it's not like it's something too major, but it does affect indie developers trying to make a living and the consumers who want a quality product and not to be misled.
