Man, I got into a kick about 2 months ago and read a bunch of batman stuff. Long Halloween was soo good. Trying to get into some Marvel now and I'm gonna check out the new Moon Knight and Ghost Rider comics.
Should I put a "what not to read" section in the op?
Should I put a "what not to read" section in the op?
Probably not, it's much easier to recommend an issue run or collection than to say not to read a certain thing.
Some non-recommendations are more preferential (for instance, I don't read books illustrated by Greg Land because I hate his art). Other ones are footnotes in greater recommendation lists (for instance, /co/'s Deadpool list includes a "don't read Daniel Way's stuff" note at the bottom).
If you want to go back to 1939 and start reading with Detective Comics #27 that's definitely possible. Comixology has a good number of the old issues availible digitally; if you want them in print, look for the Batman Archives series.
Although trying to get into Batman from the beginning is admirable, there's a lot of stuff and fluff in that 75-year body of work. I recommend looking up the DC Entertainment Essential Graphic Novels and Chronology (the 2014 edition literally just came out, but the 2013 one should be fine) - it's a free ebook that lists some of the best story arcs and graphic novels. Plus, it includes a "Backlist and Suggested Reading Order" of 107 Batman comics to read. If you can't get a copy of it, I'd be happy to scan mine for you.
I'd recommend skipping the first 40 years or so and jumping to the 80s with something like Year One. Alternatively, you could start in the New 52 - in 2011, DC did a reboot on their series, starting every comic over from #1. Batman, Detective Comics, The Dark Knight, Batman & Robin, and Batman, Inc. were the new Bat-series. They do require some knowledge of previous comics, but were designed to be more-or-less new reader friendly.
Personally I wouldn't worry too much about reading everything in order - most of my comic-reading has been done by grabbing something at the library that looked cool. You can just look up who a character is if you don't know who they are or want to learn more.

If you want more recommendations, ask /co/ and/or /r/comicbooks, they have a much larger userbase than this thread
Oh thanks a lot! This really helped me!
I read this comic once from DarkHorse cant remember it's name though. Basically it was about local dogs and a stray cat who were paranormal investigators for the local pet community. Anyone know the name?
Edit: Ah looking at Some Jerk's post now I remember, Beasts of Burden.
Is there anyone who has the copy of "Batman - Four of a kind" ?
Or knows where I could possibly get it?

If you liked Y, you should read Saga if you haven't already. They are still making issues though, it isn't complete.

Good to see there's somebody else who has read this. I recently bought animal rites from amazon. Worth every penny. I also have the most recent one shot. Outside of those I haven't gotten around to checking out the other stories in this series.
last issue of all star western is in august. pretty sad, since asw was probably top 5 of the new 52 series.
So yesterday was Wednesday. Did anybody pick up anything good?
There's a Doctor Who comic bundle thing going on at Humble Bundle.

Wonder Woman
Rocket Girl
Deadpool
Been reading the Amazing Spiderman Omnibus volume one.
I'm lead to suspect that Steve Ditko had more a hand in creating Spiderman more so than Stan Lee. There's just something funky and borderline psychedelic about Ditko's art that he seems more like the true visionary behind Spiderman, like he really understands the character more than anyone else.
Not to belittle Stan Lee's contribution though.
Also got Fantastic Four Omnibus volume 1&2. Still need to get John Byrne's Fantastic Four Omnibus as well.
So I'm all caught up on this current deadpool run. Pretty good read thus far.
So Days of Future Past did things VERY differently from the comic-book version, but I don't care because nearly every change was for the better. Changing out Kitty Pryde for Wolverine as the time-traveler meant that the story could focus more on the young Charles and his buddies rather than introducing Kitty as the comic did. Plus, shifting the assassin victim from Kelly to Trask made the sentinels' involvement much more direct and streamlined, which was nice.
Really my only complaint re: adaptation was that Future Wolverine didn't wear his awesome jacket.

Now I need to read up on Apocalypse because I know nothing about that blue-lipped dude.
Avatar comics
I like that they're answering some questions and giving us some time to see the Avatar gang kinda grow up -it's very subtle, but you can notice how their appearance changes just slightly over the course of the comics, which makes sense since the latest one, the Rift, happens 2-3 years after the end of the show.
Speaking of the Rift, that's the newest one, and it's certainly focusing a lot on Toph. I don't mind that, she's my favorite character, but considering we've heard that Season 3 of Korra will also have a lot of focus on Lin, I wonder what the reason behind that choice is...
Oh, and I did not like the Search because of that freaking stupid red herring that [sp]Zuko wasn't Ozai's son.[/sp] It was so stupid because if it was true, it nullified pretty much all of [sp]Zuko's character arc[/sp] and took out [sp]some of the complexity the show by going "thanks for all the hard work, Zuko, but you know what, Ozai wasn't really your dad, so you don't need to feel like you had a part in that. I guess madness runs in the family!"[/sp]
As for Wednesday hauls, got the newest issue on that Winter Soldier five-issue series. Can't wait to read it. Also reading the newest Inhuman series, pretty fun considering I don't know shizz about the Inhumans.

Whoo! Super happy today. Got Uncanny Xmen omnibus volume 2, Spiderman by Roger Stern omnibus, and the Fantastic Four by John Byrne omnibus volume 1&2.
By the way, John Byrne is my favorite writer/artist. Which is why I'm excited for his Fantastic Four omnibus. He also contributed to Spiderman, Hulk, and Xmen. Especially Xmen with the Dark Phoenix saga and Days of Future Past. Chris Claremont definitely is the most notable contributor to the Xmen mythos, but I think John Byrne + Claremont is what really made the comic shine. No wonder DC snatched Byrne up to do the post Crisis reboot of Superman. It's like everything Byrne touches turns into gold. Sorry for the fanyboyism.
Also purchased the Wolverine Omnibus and am super pumped for that too.
What are some good Captain America runs? I plan on collecting everything up to Captain America #214, but what's good after that?
