Get a move on then.
i watched an episode of my little pony and it was just another children's show to me.
i don't understand what makes it stand out so much.
I can't speak for anyone else but I like a few different things about it:
-The writing and voice acting, which are hard to do well, are almost always really sharp.
-The animation is funny as hell.
-It's funny as hell. There's a ton of gags that are clearly aimed at the parents of the kids watching more than the kids themselves--they live in "Equestria," there's a tree named "Bloomberg," they have a pony version of Anna Wintour, there's an owl named Owloysius, etc etc. It doesn't make any effort to downplay how ridiculous and surreal a society of ponies is either, and there's a ton of weird-as-shit stuff that comes out of it--horses sleeping in beds, applauding by stomping their hooves on the ground, pouring drinks by holding bottles in their mouths, etc. It's not as weird as Adventure Time, but it's up there. There's a scene where a pony sits in a hot tub too long and gets pruney hooves. There's an episode where a pony has a total mental breakdown because nobody comes to her party, and it's a liiittle more fucked up than you'd expect.
-All the main characters are really likable. With most cartoons there's usually an annoying character or two where you're like "oh great not [xxxx] again" but all the ponies are pretty funny (unless you have no soul). The more episodes I watched the harder it was to pick a favorite character, they all own.
-The show really loves to subvert your expectations. For example the main character, Twilight Sparkle, is usually portrayed as the Sensible One, and the other ponies come to her for advice pretty frequently. Except a lot of the time she gives really horrible advice that just ruins everything. There's an episode where two groups are about to go to war, and one of the ponies shows up at the last minute and sings a song about sharing. But everyone hates the song and they fight anyway. Stuff like that.
-Lastly, this is more of a reason for me to like the idea of the show than to watch it per se, but from a feminist viewpoint it's great. The six pony characters run the gamut from hella tomboyish to hella fem, and they're all diversely strong characters--athletes, scholars, small business owners, etc, whose plot arcs are about THEM and rarely driven by the male characters. And yeah it might seem kind of insignificant in the context of Pony Land but it's teaching little girls that they can be who they want to be and accomplish whatever they set their minds to, and that's a hell of a lot better than most half-assed "for girls" stuff that tells them they should be a princess so that a rich handsome boy will marry them. Or whatever. So politically it's doing a great job as well.
Yeah, it can be really saccharine, and there's a lot of hearts and shit on it. That put me off initially, but after a few episodes you sort of gradually get used to it and the positive stuff I just laid out starts to shine through. I'm pretty sure that's why so many people say they got more and more hooked with each episode. I don't think it's the best thing ever, and I wouldn't be heartbroken if it didn't get renewed for another season, but ultimately it's pretty damn smart and subversive for a cartoon based on such a frilly girly franchise like My Little Pony. That's evident in the huge crossover appeal it's had. And I think that's pretty worthy of respect.
A pony thread that didn't get rated more dumbs than winners?
What's going on here.
Also, the other thing about MLP is I'm pretty sure it wouldn't be so popular if so many people didn't have such a violently negative reaction to it. It's like Boxxy--the people going "OMG THIS IS SO ANNOYING STOP IT" probably did more to make it popular than the people who actually liked it at first.
whole thing
hey thanks for writing that whole thing. i don't really have anything to say in return, but i feel like i should say something.
You're welcome! I wrote an earlier version on my iPhone this morning which took like 15 minutes, and in the meantime FP logged me out and I lost it and got mad. But then I got to write it over on the computer and articulate it better, so that works out I guess.

Same with anything remotely considered bad really. Bieber is pretty much on level with shitty pop artists from the '90s, but we didn't have popular message boards and online video sharing back then.

I honestly thought you were mildly trolling the whole pony thing when I first heard you made a song about MLP, but this is the best "why MLP is OK for [me as a late/post-teenage guy]" post I've ever seen.
where the fuck were you when GMF was raiding the shit out of shit

And then suddendly hooves everywhere which reminds me of this:

Also that image still got its original name.

Of course since it also attracts normal people, it's got a larger fan base than other shows.

F the rage. I enjoyed it. Thank you TH89. Thank you.
in th89/bronies defense:
lauren faust.
end of story.
you guys remember powerpuff girls, right? that show fucking owned. that was all lauren faust. foster's home, kids next door, etc. are all pretty rad shows (except foster's got really stale due to boring subject matter) and they were mostly developed by faust, too, but mlp is especially really nice because it's her child, pretty much.
i'm not a bronie by any means. i don't give a shit about television but i absolutely adore lauren faust. she's a genius when it comes to development of shows and makes crazy good animations (remember iron giant?). i get all giddy every time i see her name. she's the best, thus mlp can't be all bad. it's like beiber; he's a genuinely good artist but his fanbase make him look like a jerk. mlp is the same exact way
[editline]16th July 2011[/editline]
i'm kind of wondering if the studios she works with has something to do with anime studio (the software). either way i'd like to know how they do their animation. everything comes off really fluent. we're no longer in the 12 fps = cartoon animation stages that needed to be drawn out every frame. 30 frames per second animations are no longer an issue and tweening is used almost constantly. i've seen quite a few shows use a lot of tweening with animations and it's really visible in MLP and foster's home. it's very clean and very pleasant to look at, and it generally can make things look a lot funnier in the end which is always a nice touch but it's starting to get stale because everything is starting to go to that stage and nothing is really original looking any more animation wise
Do want!
And think of how many good Gmod videos we will see from these!
This is a good day.
