I have never read a good fanfic of anything.
Hey guys just wanted to say Trixie is one of if not the best pony. I mean just LOOK at her HORN. it's HUGE [editline]17th July 2011[/editline] also hottest pony
I have never read a good fanfic of anything.
fan fiction inherently lends itself to unoriginal combined with the literary equivalent of breaking character there are some instances where i can enjoy what is essentially a fan fiction(Nightfall in Middle Earth by Blind Guardian and that Animal Crossing fan fiction), but it's extremely rare. also i'm more or less ok with people liking MLP but i have to emphasize that fandoms are awful and nobody is amused when "General Fluttershy" enters a TF2 server and says things like "facehoof" also it's just a really disturbing fandom no tv show should become such a large part of anyone's life.
nor should video games but hey every man has their thing
really any work of art except bjork
I'm sorry but I can't resist
I can't speak for anyone else but I like a few different things about it: -The writing and voice acting, which are hard to do well, are almost always really sharp.
I agree some of the writing is pretty good, but really only for a kids show. It's not nearly as sharp as something like Dexter. The voice acting annoys me, but I guess they got ponies down pretty well.
-The animation is funny as hell.
I don't think it's anywhere near as good as something like spongebob. (I tried to find an example, but literally every spongebob video on youtube is some "music video" to linkin park or something. hopefully you know spongebob.) I don't just mean spongebob, there are plenty of cartoons with great animation, that's part of being a cartoon in general. Still, it is a good thing for a show to have.
-It's funny as hell. There's a ton of gags that are clearly aimed at the parents of the kids watching more than the kids themselves--they live in "Equestria," there's a tree named "Bloomberg," they have a pony version of Anna Wintour, there's an owl named Owloysius, etc etc. It doesn't make any effort to downplay how ridiculous and surreal a society of ponies is either, and there's a ton of weird-as-shit stuff that comes out of it--horses sleeping in beds, applauding by stomping their hooves on the ground, pouring drinks by holding bottles in their mouths, etc. It's not as weird as Adventure Time, but it's up there. There's a scene where a pony sits in a hot tub too long and gets pruney hooves. There's an episode where a pony has a total mental breakdown because nobody comes to her party, and it's a liiittle more fucked up than you'd expect.
I actually saw the last of your examples, and while I admit it was sort of funny, it was still a very predictable style of humor. Yes there are jokes in there for parents, and yes there are some funny pony-related things, but it still feels like a kids show. Like I said earlier, it seems like a waste to me to watch a full episode of a show for just a few good jokes.
-All the main characters are really likable. With most cartoons there's usually an annoying character or two where you're like "oh great not [xxxx] again" but all the ponies are pretty funny (unless you have no soul). The more episodes I watched the harder it was to pick a favorite character, they all own.
I must have no soul or something, because I really don't like very many characters. Pinky pie is way too annoying for me, twilight feels like a really flat character with nothing to her, uhhh... the one who has the "amazing" hair and seems very rich really annoys me as a character, and the southern one annoys me as well. I like rainbow dash and the yellow one.
-The show really loves to subvert your expectations. For example the main character, Twilight Sparkle, is usually portrayed as the Sensible One, and the other ponies come to her for advice pretty frequently. Except a lot of the time she gives really horrible advice that just ruins everything. There's an episode where two groups are about to go to war, and one of the ponies shows up at the last minute and sings a song about sharing. But everyone hates the song and they fight anyway. Stuff like that.
I feel like this is also pretty predictable, even though it's against your expectations. In a lot of kids shows they sort of set up these situations that you know will go wrong, even though the characters are just trying to make things work. It's sort of a staple of cartoons.
-Lastly, this is more of a reason for me to like the idea of the show than to watch it per se, but from a feminist viewpoint it's great. The six pony characters run the gamut from hella tomboyish to hella fem, and they're all diversely strong characters--athletes, scholars, small business owners, etc, whose plot arcs are about THEM and rarely driven by the male characters. And yeah it might seem kind of insignificant in the context of Pony Land but it's teaching little girls that they can be who they want to be and accomplish whatever they set their minds to, and that's a hell of a lot better than most half-assed "for girls" stuff that tells them they should be a princess so that a rich handsome boy will marry them. Or whatever. So politically it's doing a great job as well.
This I do fully agree with. I don't see why you'd watch the show because of that, but I do think it's nice for little girls to get shows like this to teach them while they grow up. I hate when people argue point by point like this and divide up a quote, sorry. I just really don't see why this show is so appealing. I get that there are some positive qualities to it, but why not watch any of the endless amounts of other shows on TV? Then you don't have to deal with the fluffy bullshit, all the jokes are directed at your demographic, and most other people can understand why you like the show as well.
i will never be ok with the 30 year old man wired interviewed who said that MLP taught him more about friendship than 30 years of life did
This is getting quite off topic. I like the show. If others don't, fine, they don't. We don't need lots of pages of discussion about how this person likes it and this person doesn't.

there are two kinds of people, people who like MLP and are creepy and deserve to be insulted, and people who don't like it when people pick on MLP if you are not one of these people and you like MLP then you are irrelevant to my interests
I have never read a good fanfic of anything.
i remember really enjoying one named the circle of friends
I got sucked into one... can't stop reading it now.
And just a side note, I recently tried to watch some shows like Spongebob, ed edd and eddy, angry beavers, rugrats, etc. As amazing as those shows were when I was younger, they just aren't that funny anymore, and to me MLP is no exception. They were mainly designed as shows for kids to appreciate, and as sad as it is that I can no longer get the same amount of enjoyment out of an episode of spongebob, it's pretty much true.
This is pretty much it. If you're not much of a fan of late 90's cartoons, you probably won't like the show as much. The reason I watch it is because when I was a kid in the 90's, I watched a lot of cartoons, and I absolutely loved them to death. This show's creator(Lauren Faust) played an important role in that industry back then. Oh well, I don't mind being a child at heart. [editline]17th July 2011[/editline] Side note, I read fanfics to make fun of them. Much better when you read them in a group. Though Fallout: Equestria is pretty damn good. I listened to the audiobook version(yes, we have people that actually love the fanfic enough to make one) and it really lured me in. I'd say 90% of the stuff he writes is original, since he barely mentions any of the show's characters. A lot of writers, musicians, and artists in the community use MLP as a jumping platform to practice their skills, so they can one day make their own original creations, outside of ponies.
