Well breeding working dogs has worked quite well.
Breeding dogs for their looks, however, has not.
One of mine was an adoption, but too early. Her mother had had like 3 other litters and didn't want to care for the puppies, so she was adopted out early and didn't get any attention from her mother or her siblings. She has some listening issues now, and doesn't like to listen, but we love her.
My other we found all soggy walking down the middle of the road one day. He took to us immediately, and we saw that he had his fur rubbed off his neck where someone kept a collar on him waaayyy too tight, so we decided not to try and find his original owners. That, and he was traumatized of the outdoors and water, so we think he was left out in the elements. He has shitloads of medical problems, is extremely allergic to everything under the sun, and had a stroke once. He's a lovable idiot. An expensive one.
And my third dog was abused by his first owners, who gave him to my friend, but he didn't get much attention from them. We took him in when they needed to get rid of him. He's very protective of us- to the point that he'll try to bite people that he thinks are a thread, particularly men. But he's the sweetest dog, and because of how he was abused he listens immediately and behaves very well.
These are the types of dogs people should be looking for, the ones that could use homes and caring, patient families. Pedigree dogs unfortunately were bred just for show and status, and as we can all see, it has major affects on the dogs. To continue breeding these animals the way we do, it's dangerous and harmful. There's nothing wrong with a stray or a mix or a working dog, or what have you. Rich people buying status dogs who care nothing for their health or lives.
i'm not a dog buff, but the best cats are mongrels. tough as tanks, they are, like my stray one.
jesus, that lady at 6:30.
i mean, wow.
"oh man, im so burdened by healthy puppies that dont have ridges. they need to be put to sleep immediately".
just fucking wow
I thought it was common knowledge that you weren't supposed to breed dogs with father to daughter and son to mother?

"it was inappropriate for you to confront that pageant winner because her dog(that she will inevitably breed for top dollar) has a serious hereditary health condition!"
What are pedigree dogs?
certified pure-bred. mostly victims of forced incest.
I've never been into the dog show scene, but as a hunter I do have a lot of experience through other hunters with pedigree dogs. it's not pretty stuff, out of a litter of a dozen you typically only have 4 or 5 dogs tops that don't die from either birth defects or being put down because they "weren't good enough". the ones that do survive the first few weeks are almost always subjected to extreme and inhumane "training," and then when it's time for them to go out on a hunt they're always starved for days before the big event.
I imagine it's even worse with show dogs. hunters are just breeding for behavioral patterns, show dogs are bred for behavioral patterns, odor, beauty, and all sorts of other things.
I don't like dogs. But I liked this video.
Check out the background at 46:40

my dog is a pure bred Fresno Dirt Dingo.
I hate dogs like pugs and other animals bred for peoples amusements, pugs can barely fucking breath.
We should be breeding dogs to be stronger and smarter. Not cuter and with desirable traits for us.
That is if we did any breeding at all.
I haven't finished the video, so I'm not sure if it goes into this, but this problem is even worse in Japan. There isn't an established system for adopting dogs that have already had owners. It's seen as unclean to do so, so almost all disowned dogs and cats are put down.
Sickening.
The small skull and heart disease issue is pretty common across many many breeds. I used to have a Gordon Setter with a small skull, it's not just traumatic for the animal to have seizures all the time, but it changes them, they become very short tempered and prone to bite over even the smallest things, and he became increasingly ill tempered to the point that we would have to warn people not to go near him, the his heart stopped beating one day. Gordons in general often have severe heart problems which manifests itself as a heavy gasping and panting all the time because they can't get enough oxygen in their blood.
This wasn't a pedigree dog either, it was a hunting dog, so you can imagine how much worse the pedigree dogs are, the hunting and predigree Gordon Setters look like entirely different breeds.
Holy shit, that posh old bag who claimed she would prefer they put down a dog just because it doesn't have a visible ridge on its back meaning it doesn't comply with Kennel club standards need to pull that diamond encrusted dick out of her ass.
Sheesh son, the royals have been inbreeding for generations. Why are dogs inbreeding such a big issue?
Makes me even more glad i got a rescue collie cross.
Sheesh son, the royals have been inbreeding for generations. Why are dogs inbreeding such a big issue?
Dogs have shorter generations, and the aggressiveness of the inbreeding is on a level that is simply incomparable to that of royalty.
Not to mention the fact that they're breeding for specific physiological traits without any regard for the health of the dogs.
That one breed's skull is so small that its brain can no longer fit inside of it. That's just fucked beyond belief.
You can't really force animals to inbreed, since it's something that they'll do willingly. They don't have the taboo against it like humans do. Put a male dog in with his daughter, his sister, his mother, and three unrelated female dogs. He's going to breed whichever bitch comes into heat first. The same applies to any animal.
Inbreeding is a viable breeding method, but it needs to be done carefully. It can either magnify desirable traits, or it can make undesirable traits more prominent. However, constant inbreeding can and will lead to an unhealthy animal.
As an example, my parents breed goats. They were given a male goat and were told to breed test him because he "had a very good pedigree". When we finally got the pedigree, he was so inbred that he was probably his own brother. It was a complete five generation pedigree of brother to sister breedings on both sides. Not only did he die before he turned two, the vast majority of his offspring did to. On the other side of the coin, they bred their one male to a number of his daughters/half sisters. The end result were youngsters that were bigger, fast growing, and are over all very healthy.
Now, what the people in the video are doing is just bull shit. There's no reason to euthanize an animal because it doesn't meet breed standard. Spay/neuter it and sell it as pet quality.
Wow those pedigree dogs really are mutants.
Compared to what they used to look they are but a shell of their former selves.
