BURN THE HERETIC
I mean nah it's still good it's just abdrew is tripping over all these loose ends.
I know this is probably heresy or something, but am I the only one that thinks Homestuck has gone downhill?
I mean its not bad by any means, I still love it, but it just doesn't seem as good as it once was any more. I dont know if anyone else here feels the same way, or if its just me.
I personally believe that the quality of the storytelling/recent story quality has railroaded downhill since Gamzee went insane.
I hardly ever actively "check" for updates anymore, I just wait until someone tells me there's been an update, or the group announcement before I check. In fact, most fan adventures entice me more now than the actual MSPA itself.

it's a lot more serious than it used to be. it's still goofy and there's that distinct "homestuck" presence, but it definately is a lot more serious especially with how things have been progressing recently, that being death, people doing pirouettes off the deep end, and more death

The thing is though that Andrew went from "oh hey classic homestuck" to "WHOA LOOK AT ME I'M SO DARK AND EDGY LOOK CHARACTERS ARE DYING" in literally 4/5 panels. He should have eased into it. Plus, I still feel that the whole Crazy Gamzee thing still feels a bit cheap.
and i posted this without finishing what i was trying to say
i prefer the goofiness and i think you'd agree with me on this one, ive been rereading the first couple acts of homestuck and i enjoy them a lot more than the newer acts, however that doesn't mean i am not looking forward to seeing what happens
all in all some people like the old tone of homestuck and some like the new tone
i dont think i really presented my point here but w/e
[editline]29th May 2011[/editline]
oh and then my automerge was broken
yeah i agree with you completely zombii, hussie has kind of messed with the overall feel of hs recently
It's certainly improve since Andrew was randomly killing off characters. I think it's going to get better, we still got 2 acts ahead so let's see what happens.

Eh I agree with you, I think it's gone downhill in storytelling due to the fact that to me it feels like it's just faffing about until the huge amounts of faffing around make some sort of development in the plot, IE the whole broken disc fiasco.
It's fairly obvious that this whole "Doc Scratch wraps it up" thing is Hussie wrapping up act 5.2 in a faster way than he originally intended, and I am okay with this.

"We can't waste any time!"
"Well that's just what we've been doing isn't it, wasting time?"
Also, I kinda think the trolls were a bit much. I like them and all, in fact Terezi is one of my favorite characters in the whole thing, but adding 12 new main characters was too much for Andrew to handle.
It just seems like he took WAY too much attention away from the four kids. Now you get more troll updates than kid updates, its very annoying. I used to think Rose and Jade were cool characters, now they are so sidelined, I honestly don't care anymore. I have no interest in whatever Jade is up to anymore, because he decided to explain it, and then never talk about it again, because god forbid we don't focus on the trolls for a little while. Then we hear nothing from Rose for a while, and when we finally do hear from her, she just goes "grimdark" and then dies. I felt nothing when I found out she was dead. Certainly doesnt help that you hear it second hand in a "recap". I mean he just jumps around from plot-line to plot-line without establishing ANYTHING. It just ends on a cliffhanger and then "lets see what *TOTALLY UNRELATED CHARACTER* is up to!" then repeat ad nauseum.
Ugh, the whole story just feels like such a mess now. Sorry if I'm ranting. :frown:
I always hate when these conversations come up, makes me wonder if Homestuck is actually shit and if I should never have liked it in the first place.
I always hate when these conversations come up, makes me wonder if I should never have liked Homestuck in the first place.
You totally should like it, acts 1-4 were the greatest stuff ever. Shit just went downhill after that. Its still good, just not as good.
I always hate when these conversations come up, makes me wonder if Homestuck is actually shit and if I should never have liked it in the first place.
The conversations wouldn't even occur if it weren't at least somewhat good, so you're still safe.
makes me wonder if Homestuck is actually shit and if I should never have liked it in the first place.
You're a bad person. These thoughts should not be crossing a sane person's mind.
All im going to say is Im going to read it to the end. I love its art style and the characters. so for better or worse im sticking with hussie and giving him all the support i can
I always hate when these conversations come up, makes me wonder if Homestuck is actually shit and if I should never have liked it in the first place.
Honestly if you like it you shouldn't stop liking it because people are discussing it's negative traits.
Hussie definitely fucked up with how many trolls there were, there was no way he'd be able to efficiently manage them all, if he'd stuck with just the patron trolls or maybe half the amount there originally was it'd have been far, far better, but as it is now they've been plotculled down to a good amount.
Ugh, the whole story just feels like such a mess now. Sorry if I'm ranting. :frown:
Sorry if this sounds pretentious, but coming from a guy who has watched this..."fandom" or whatever for longer than he read the comic (I only started at a friend on /co/'s insistence, but I've seen people arguing about it and been trolling them since the beginning):
1) Someone has always thought the story was a mess. The reasons change (too much user input leader to "lol so randum!" stuff, not enough user input leading to too much plot, too many characters, etc.), but that's a constant.
2) Everyone making these complaints is reading serially.
3) Almost no one "catching up" or going over the archives complains about the story.
The problem, as I see it, is that the story is running multiple plotlines- your standard Hero's Journey, and then one of every type of basic plot out there (Quest and Adventure are definite, you just had a Pursuit, Rescue was frequent at the beginning, Escape is dubious but was presented as the main troll plot at one point, Revenge and Rivalry are duh, Riddle was the majority of the shit in each kid's respective land, Transformation/Metamorphosis/Maturation/Love/Forbidden Love have been constants since the trolls, Vriska is a Wretched Excess...I could probably take up a good 50 pages just listing the variants of all of this shit) but temporally displaced, ala almost every modern story (and moreso than most.) Throw in the fact that you're dealing with something meant to be read archived first and serially second, and what appears like a basic plot structure to everyone else:

...looks to you guys like either a vast pit of boring or RAMP OF INFINITE EXCITEMENT depending on where shit's at.
So ramping back from the pretentiousness a bit, if you aren't digging it right now, take a month off. Read a book for a while instead. Come back in around 100 pages from wherever you left and catch up running, and then see if it's still shit.
I mean, it might be, but you're not ingesting it in a way conducive to making that judgement accurately. What you're doing now is like watching Pulp Fiction at 6 fps. Of course it seems muddy/messy/strange.
Yeah but the thing is reading it serial-style should be the #1 thing he tailors the story for since it's a serial webcomic.
I mean it'd be all fine and dandy for the archive style if he released updates in gigantic chunks or act-by-act, but as it is now it's a serial and should be paced like it.
Thing is, I have been reading the comic serially since Act 2. It seemed fine then.
I don't think its so much about how its taking things slowly, just that the comic is trying to juggle a million different things at once.
I dunno, maybe that's what you're trying to say. I hate to say it this way, but its 1 in the morning and I'm finding it difficult to read that, but it just because my brain is almost completely shut off.
I need sleep :frown:
edit: aw shit, I'm a page king. Sorry, this is a really shitty page king.
I think it's fine are you people not true fans?!!?!?!?

Like I said, I still love it. It just seems messier, and, to me, it lacks a certain charm the older acts had.
Well acts 1-4 were mostly centered completely around the kids and their wackier, lighter hearted antics.
The Trolls had a much darker humor and were generally more serious, and act 5.2 had the two settings kind of clash and it worked in some ways and didn't in others.
The archival reader always has the luxury of moving on to the next page, regardless of how he reacts to certain events, and thus can be more impassive about it. That internal cacophony isn't given time to build, and if there are reservations about a string of events, whether due to shocking revelations, or questions over the narrative merit of something, or really any form of dissatisfaction, all he has to do is keep clicking to see how it all fits together, and can make a more complete judgment with hindsight.
[Cue long, omitted explanation of the same shit you're all doing now that you did however long ago when Fef and Kan died.]
Reading the same events in the archive is quite different. Very little of that inner monologue takes shape. And while the events are still shocking, and the reader may raise his eyebrows a mile high, he then simply lowers them and keeps reading.
But like I've said, I don't think one way of reading is necessarily better than the other. Both have plusses, and obviously I choose to make this serially, and I play off plenty of in the moment reactions. But I tend consider the archival experience more, because when all is said and done, this thing has to sit on a server for years to come, waiting for new people to find it.
I'm trying to tell you, man, you're hung up on one of the bigger crests as this shit nears peak with no way of going forward except to wait. It'll look cleaner in retrospect.
It's certainly improve since Andrew was randomly killing off characters. I think it's going to get better, we still got 2 acts ahead so let's see what happens.
It was hardly "random". Take a look at every character that died (Kanaya doesn't count) and ask your self what do they have in common. The answer? They all did nothing worth mentioning up until the moment before they died. They had no purpose, so they got killed.
It probably would've been smarter to start with 5 or 6 Trolls instead of 12. Sure the astrology angle would be impossible to cover and the class system would be much smaller, but those are both trivial matters when it comes down to plot progression.
That's true of basically everything on the internet Xeno.
