It isn't a meaningful death if you don't feel bad that the character got cut down.
It's not that I feel bad and want him revived, I just think there could be more to the character, and it was a shame he got fucked off before he could get some more exposition.

Same could be said for Nepeta Equius Feferi Eridan Dad Mom and Grandpa. I'm sure I'm forgetting some but there are a lot of characters who's exposition was lacking, to put it lightly.

The problem with the character deaths isn't that they die. That's fine, there's no reason why you should say he can't do that. In fact, it'd get kinda boring if he went on this long without having somebody die.
The real problem is that the afterlife is essentially just a trash bin for characters that have served their intended purpose (Alt. Future Dave, Erdian) or throwaway characters (Tavros, Nepeta) and it seems unlikely that it will ever have any real, visible significance unless John really did die and will spend the next part of the story trying to find a means of escape.
Fact of the matter is, the is a lot that could be done with the afterlife, but it's unlikely that any of these possible scenarios will actually happen. More likely is that it will remain what it is now: a trash bin.
