A classmate of mine committed suicide today because of bullying

My school is possibly the worst when it comes to gay acceptance. There's only a handful of people (besides my friends, obviously) that I know respect homosexuals.
I've gotten in trouble several times for defending gay rights and preventing bullying if you've seen my posts in other LGBT-related threads.

I like how Zeke remains ambiguous in his stance.
I put up with this bullying shit constantly. not because of sexual preferences, but because people are generalized dicks, especially at school
Gays don't deserve any of the shit other people throw at them.

Would you like me not to? Okay, here comes the viewpoints train
Anyone who says the following phrases is an idiot:
- "Suicide is selfish"
- "Suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem"
You're probably wondering why those phrases are idiotic. It's a very simple reason: they are always uttered by people who are not suicidal and have never been suicidal. People who have no right speaking to the mindset of someone who is.
"But what makes you qualified to do just that, Zeke?" is what you may be asking. Good question! It may surprise (or in the case of MaverickIB, delight) you to learn that I had a rather lengthy period of my life where I was suicidal and actually attempted it once.
For anyone who has never had any type of mental problem before, imagine the worst pain of your life. You're probably thinking of a broken bone or maybe you got stabbed or something. And yeah, those are terrible. But they're understandable. Your mind knows where the pain is coming from and why. Nerve endings are sending pain signals to the brain which is interpreting it as "jeeze pal, you should get [injury location here] checked out soon". That's how physical pain works. Mental pain is different. (I'll speak only to depression here, but many people have other issues (I did) that I won't be getting into) Instead of it being a centralized thing, it's more of your mind itself being engulfed by _____ (I don't have a word for it). A religious person might interpret it something to the effect of their soul being injured instead of their body. A facepuncher will draw a blank because it really is something that doesn't have english words to describe.
In addition to the fact that it fucking sucks and completely takes your life away from you, it actively prevents you from trying to get rid of it. It's easy to say "just go to a shrink" but there are numerous factors at play that make this a challenge:
- Depression steals your motivation to do anything beyond the bare minimum needed to survive and function at a minimal level. (Eat, sleep, drink, shit, shower)
- Western and Asian societies (read: the majority of the world) stigmatize people with mental health problems.
- Because it is unlike anything you've ever felt before, it's impossible not to believe that your situation is unique and you end up feeling like nobody will be able to help you.
This runs nicely into why the phrase "permanent solution to a temporary problem" is idiotic. To someone who is suicidal, it does not feel temporary. By nature of the condition it's nearly impossible to believe otherwise. This goes for depression developed by bullying, by a shitty job, or just randomly. (I'm going to say that bullying makes it worse because it means that you have that many more people out there who have no interest in helping you) Now that you know why that phrase is dumb (and you'll stop using it), let's look at the other one:
"It's selfish". And to that I ask, is it selfish to wish to die if you're suffering from chronic physical pain? I think most facepunchers here are for euthanasia in those kinds of situations, right? So why should this be different? We've already established that depression:
- is extremely painful
- gives the illusion of permanence
so would it not be selfish to expect someone in this situation to remain alive just so you don't have to feel bad? Aren't people entitled to be relieved of their pain if they so choose? Hopefully now you'll stop using this phrase, as well.
There's my post take it or leave it
Natural ice right there, man.
Bullying is fucking sick, it doesn't matter who is involved or why, I had a pretty rough time in primary school and I thought about laying across some traintracks a few times. I was 10.
Children make me sick.

I hate hearing about someone so young wanting to die just because other people can't keep their mouth shut
And as always, I bet the school ignored everything that was happening
Fuck now I feel bad

This oh god this.
The only thing worse than getting bullied is when you take it to higher authority and they do nothing.
One time the teacher (fucking moronic bitch) called my parents in for an interview and said I deserved to be bullied because I was smarter than all the other fuckwit kids.
God damn I'm glad I'm out of that town.
a few weeks ago a girl committed suicide about 100 m from the trainstation I was at, though not in line of sight. she went the same education I do, just one class below.
overwhelming for the families and friends
This is really really awful, but suicide is one of the most selfish things a person can do. He had a boyfriend, and surely other friends whom enjoyed his company. He had a mother and father. At a low point in my life I've always thought about this as a way to stop me from contemplating suicide. Is it really worth throwing it all away? You're not helping anyone; you're hurting those close to you, not to mention yourself (since you'd be dead and all.) He must have been a pretty desperate person to not be able to think it through and decide that he'd be better off dead.
Poor soul. Let's be honest with ourselves here, fact of the matter is -- suicide is a quitters rejoice. They're only labeled stupid for committing the act itself, not because they are actually intellectually disturbed. It's the shame he will bring to his parents/family/siblings for years to come because he was selfish and took away someone that they loved. (Not to mention everyone always asking "lol didnt ur son/bro kill himself" etc. etc.)
I know and understand that the emotion and chemical imbalances that accompany the disorders that usually provoke an impending suicide, and I know it severely clouds your conscious logic and judgement. (But that doesn't mean it's not stupid of them to want to end their life)
Gays don't bother me unless they're "all up in my face" about their sexuality. If they go off and do their own thing, that's fine by me.
yeah because hetero sexuals aren't up in their face all the time or anything
you make me sick.
Poor guy.
:frown:
So he committed suicide instead of speaking to someone who could help.
Our generation is fucked up...

To cure the sickness you should administer a dose of vitamin ban

I shitpost and get hundreds of funnies, I goodpost and nobody reads
I'm wearing purple today. Just got called gay because of that. Shit sucks.
Homophobia is so deeply engrained into the human mind, it's sickening. There's no reason to dislike people who are different. Diversity is what keeps our lives entertaining. But 4000 people on the facebook event = wow. Good job. Also, RIP Drew. Nobody should be driven to take their own life.
A very close friend of mine killed himself a few years ago because of absolute vicious and violent anti-gay bullying, it got so bad, once he was hospitalised. The traumatic stress I felt from both losing a friend and being the unlucky bastard who found him really took its toll. I feel for the people around him.
If someone kills themselves as a result of bullying can the bullies be prosecuted? I don't know how US law works in this regard
I'm reading in alot of comments he didn't do it because of bullying? eh? Some of his, who claim to be friends, said he was never bullied..
Well, great. I was planning on going to school happy today :smith:

Because being hetero sexual is, you know, common thing? And, dare I say, statistically normal?
What I have to say on the topic. Well. Gays are going to always be hated by most of the society. That's just a fact, no matter how hard will you think 'oh god so wrong'. That's a form of self-defence for it. I think it has something to deal with instincts. Gays are abnormal for the society/tribe, they're dangerous as they don't actually help to make it bigger and stronger. They maybe aren't exactly 'dangerous', more like, they're 'useless' in terms of social biology. And there's nothing anyone can do to change it. The Law of Nature hates anomalies, while they're going to always be there. Like life and death.
If I would be gay and if someone would bully me I'd hit them hard.

Where's the hatred for sterile people?
How bigoted of you.
If these assholes are happy with their goddamn selves, I swear something needs to be done with them.
Either the social way, or the total Stalin way.
I don't understand it, people need to toughen up. Not that I'm saying bullying is a good thing, it's rather irritating. I was bullied, I didn't give two shits. It made my emotions do a plummet in emotional shit sometimes, but damned if I was going to commit suicide. The life I was given is a bliss. I can be thankful for it. At times I wish I didn't when I was in school. If you meet the wrong people it still can.
It's a terrible thing he had to commit suicide to get away from it.
