A classmate of mine committed suicide today because of bullying
I think it's silly how people believe their depression was/is worse than everyone else's.
I've been depressed too. Suicidal? No, because I'm not a little girl. I felt like shit and didn't have any motive to keep moving forward, but I was a smart enough individual to realize that I was depressed and life wasn't really as bad as I was perceiving it. With that in mind, I just kept forcing myself to get out of bed until it went away over time.
Depression sucks, yes, but it does not justify suicide. You can spew bullshit about how I don't understand what it's like and blah blah blah, but I do. Suicide is for the weak of heart, suicide is for the weak of mind.
This.
While I do miss my friends dearly, I still feel a little anger towards the fact they didn't try to push through and stay with the rest of us.
Poor guy... Rest his soul.
The OP should have paid more attention to what was happening to this chap and put more care into the individual.
Something could've helped that kid gain some confidence in himself.
homophobia is not restricted to bullying in schools, this kid was pretty much about to go through a life of homophobic intolerant retards
I doubt homophobia even had much to do with it, man. The fact is the kid was different and probably a bit of a loner, which made him an easy target. They probably didn't give a shit that he was gay, and neither does the rest of the world. Yeah, sure, there are dumb bigots out there, but they are the minority, and things are only improving. Look at how different the world has become for homosexuals since even just the 70's. It's a whole new place.
And even if the world were as cruel and intolerant as you're playing it to be, why would that make a difference? I might be mistaken, but it seems like most of the gay people in the world today probably decided that living under the strain of an occasional bigot is probably more rewarding than offing yourself in high school.
This is an amazing job of totally missing the point.
The whole purple thing is multi-faceted: it helps some of those grieving, and it helps other gay people in his position feel less alone and alienated.
It's not missing the point; it's what the OP posted. I'm sure he could've worded it better.
Shut up you massive prick it's not like everyone's the same, some people can take an almost intolerable amount of shit and others snap like tooth picks, just because you're fortunate enough to be the former does not mean the latter are dumb - chances are you've never went through the same crap this kid did, at least without deserving it.
I've actually been on both sides of the equation. I've bullied relentlessly and I've been bullied relentlessly. The fact that some people break almost instantaneously proves everything I've been saying, suicide is one way nature enforces natural selection on humans. You're saying it's perfectly okay to be mentally weak and fragile? I'm not saying people like that deserve to die, but when they commit suicide over something silly, you shouldn't attempt to justify their actions by telling everyone else that they simply don't understand.
Like BDA and myself said, depression may suck ass but it doesn't make you stupid. Any intelligent person would know that depression doesn't last forever, anyone that kills themselves because of a temporary problem like depression does not exactly fit the description of intelligence.
I like how in this thread everyone supporting gays yet in any other thread if its mentioned they would be showered with the optimistic rating.
Bullies are narrow minded assholes who have no self-esteem. Instead, it is replaced with showing the said fact off by assaulting others, physically or psychologically.
On a side note, we need more Zangief kids in schools.

Unintelligent? Not necessarily. Short-sighted, weak, and unstable? Definitely. There are exceptions, but as a rule I tend to view suicides as unforgivable and irrevocable displays of over-dramatization. The wheel is constantly turning, and sometimes you just end up on the bottom. When everything goes to shit, all you can do is put your head down and weather the storm until you're in a position to make things better.
I mourn the kid's death, but more than that I regret that he wasn't able to cope with the common difficulties of life. If he'd had proper help and guidance he might have learned how.

This is serious shit, though. Nobody "rates a gaybow" in real life.
Anyone can get bullied in school for being different, no exceptions.

It's interesting though. Is it the intelligent mind that causes you to commit suicide or is it the subhuman mind?

That's weird, in my school there is this gay dude and everyone loves him.

People's inner most deepest thoughts can tell people to do ridiculous things. Once they are too overpowering to overcome, they are capable of taking over part of your mindset.
I hate when people are classed as being "depressed"... makes me sick to my stomach.

Listen to yourself you massive prick, "natural selection" "Mentally weak" "Fragile" literally stop talking you have no idea what this kid went through because you went through the same depression every other teen goes through, it doesn't mean you're a veteran of mental trauma. As you said depression doesn't make you stupid but damn man it seemed to have worked a treat on you!

Feelings and thoughts can tell you such different things and still be so hard to separate. It's strange.
And what do you mean by classed as being depressed, like diagnosed?

Maverick is making a point that is worthy to think about though I'm not sure if I agree, or like the perspective.
That's weird, in my school there is this gay dude and everyone loves him.
There were a few openly gay folk in my school. The first one to come out got his share of shit initially, but once people realized that he was comfortable with himself and didn't care what other people had to say about it, the teasing stopped pretty quickly. Bullies don't really give a shit about what makes somebody different, they just leech off of the insecurities of other people in order to try and secure a place in the social hierarchy. Eliminating or effectively masking those insecurities leaves them with no ammunition, but reacting to their dumb games just forces a positive feedback loop.
Bullying requires participation from all parties. Do your best to ignore the stupid people doing stupid things and know that their focus will eventually shift elsewhere.
Yes because the kid killed himself because of natural selection and because he was mentally weak and fragile. It's not even worth considering because it's appalling that you even try to find a way to gun yourself ahead of someone that was driven to suicide and claim you're so much better cause you're alive.
People are different and situations are different and culture among humanity has advanced past stupid primitive bollocks like that and to sum it up as natural selection is the stupidest thing I have ever heard of.

Not necessarily, as in "That guy is suffering from depression" is different from "He is just depressed".
The latter is the one that I can't stand.

No offense, but you sound like you think really highly of yourself so I doubt you've ever been in a situation as bad as a truly depressed person. Not saying suicide is acceptable, but you need to see it from their point of view, to these people it looks like there is no other escape.
Not necessarily, as in "That guy is suffering from depression" is different from "He is just depressed".

Ah yeah, I agree though I never really hear that.
What an idiot.
If you're different, you are looked down upon.
Yet, it's us
Sucks though for the OP, but I can't imagine how serious the bullying must had been since he ended up offing himself.
Gays don't bother me unless they're "all up in my face" about their sexuality. If they go off and do their own thing, that's fine by me.
As opposed to straight men who never talk constantly about sex and objectifying women. Don't tell me that isn't a homophobic view.
I don't respect him for commiting suicide nor do I feel bad for him. There are so many other things you can do to make things easier for yourself. To end your life because of a few assholes isn't worth it. We all have our own problems and we work through them. That's life. Get used to it.
[editline]23rd March 2011[/editline]
And before anyone calls me a heartless bastard or says I don't know suicide first hand, my brother attempted to end his life several times. And I still think the same way.

While this may be correct for some bullies, it isn't the case universally.
When I was a bully in elementary school, I did it because it was fun and exciting. Yes, I was a cruel and sadistic child, but I simply thought it was fun to play with people's emotions and try to evoke certain reactions from them. I was as confident as children get, had no self-esteem issues, did well in school, all that jazz. I was just an asshole.
Most bullies do it just because they are assholes.
Everyone who thinks homophobia is involved in this is being ridiculous. Bullies work by finding something you're sensitive about and targeting it. They most likely had no problem with gay people, they just knew the kid was sensitive about being gay so they targeted it. If he was fat, they would have targeted that. Hell, they might have even targeted him being a jew if he was one, even though they don't have any antisemitic beliefs.
Bullies find your weakness and exploit it. If the kid didn't wear his heart on his sleeve and simply said "Yeah, I'm gay. Sue me," then they would have left him alone.
Bullying people because they're gay makes no sense when there are plenty of people you can bully for being religious fanatics.
Um...I don't think that would be good reason either...
I get bullied all the time. I'm pretty sure no one notices. Not even the Teachers, hell half the time they defend them so there isn't really any hope.
Suicide prevention is a joke.
