Nobody knows, it can happen now, or it can not happen at all. Probably the latter. [editline]31st October 2010[/editline]
[img_thumb]http://www.astronomynotes.com/evolutn/redgiant.gif[/img_thumb] better shows how screwed Earth would be
By the it happens we will be able to leave the solar system for another one.
lol @ people thinking anything less than 100 years. serious i can't believe how stupid some of you are. I can see the human race lasting at least 10,000 more (we've already lasted over 50,000 years in our modern form)
About 5-7 Billion years. [img_thumb]http://www.space.com/images/h_in_sun_redgiant_03.gif[/img_thumb]
By that time, i bet we would be able to live on the sun itself
You can actually predict this. When it happens it happens.
hundreds of years, for lacking of resources. first, society will split in 2: who got clean water and supplies, and who doesn't. obviously the scale will be 1 on 1'000'000. let's consider there will be 20+billions people in the world. massive riots will occur, and bang, end of the civilization. beginning of the ancient -strong rule the weak- way.
About 5-7 Billion years. [img_thumb]http://www.space.com/images/h_in_sun_redgiant_03.gif[/img_thumb]
Wouldn't it be less than that? I mean. Its not just going to pop one day and be that big. I'd guess based on that diagram alone...under a hundred million years I think. I'm not sure. But if the heat doubled during the days we'd be pretty fucked.
When my son launches all of our missiles,oh dear :ohdear:
couple hundread of years when there's almost no space to convert to our needs and major conflict begins over land and resources.
When Facepunch dies.
1 year, 1 mouth, 25 days +or- about a week, so says the rock!
I don't see the end coming any time soon We keep moving on, as we have always done, and we've gone through so much shit that it's miraculous

Never. We will colonise new planets, make even more scientific progress, and live forever!
2060 according to Sir Issac Newton.
There will always be civilisation.
I wouldn't care if this was the way I was dying. I would just stare and start laughing, most likely.
When we learn to send humans to other planets there will be a colonization age all over again.
This thread reminded me of something... I saw in some documentary some time ago (can't remenber the name), that there is a certain percentage per year of a nuclear war hapening. When that percentage is analysed over a long period, the percentage of a nuclear war hapening rises exponentially. Like if there is a 1% chance of that hapening per year, in a period of 100 years that chance becomes 100%. So in a period of 100 years there will be at least one nuclear war. I bellieve that this theory could be (and already has been aplied) to know periods of time where certain events will hapen. It's just a matter doing the math...
Tomorrow
What kind of silly question is this? What makes you think civilization will collapse any time soon? Civilization seems more stable now than at any previous point in history.

2060 according to Sir Issac Newton.
newtons a big fag
How can you apply a percentage to something like nuclear war?
That I don't know. must have something with the near nuclear wars during the cold war or the geo-politics state of affairs or something.
When I find out how to breed

Then include the variable of how stupid we'd really have to be...
I'm not sure it's a variable, it appears to have remained constant as I look at history
In a fuckton of years. No need to worry.
