I did think over this.
and how do you manage these problems?
Yeah, but you do realize that alpha radiation is the most ionizing?
It also has the shortest range of all radiation and does not have the penetrating power to go through the layer of dead skin. That is why alpha is only dangerous if an alpha emitting radiation source is ingested.
Those are fighting words
Still true, though
Damn quantum physics always causing problems
You obviously don't know what your talking about.
lemme get this straight. youve soaked in loads of information on nuclear physics by the age of 15, and yet you still haven't understood the use of your and you're?
for that reason, i'm also out.
I did think over this.
Can't say you thought over this unless you explain how. So tell me, Mr. junior nuclear physicist, how do you solve those problems I present to you?
I KNOW! WE CAN DRAW POWER FROM THE UNIVERSE ITSELF! IT MIGHT JUST WORK!
and how do you manage these problems?
First of all, I am not building this reactor full scale. I'm thinking more like a miniature reactor. Like the one that 15 year old built in Michigan.
Yeah, but you do realize that alpha radiation is the most ionizing?
Yes, but the discussion wasn't even originally about alpha particles.
First of all, I am not building this reactor full scale. I'm thinking more like a miniature reactor. Like the one that 15 year old built in Michigan.
It still needs cooling
And can that power a city like you stated in your goals?
It still needs cooling
And can that power a city like you stated in your goals?
Long-term goals :v:
And why does 2 thirds of the people in this thread think a 14 year old could not build a reactor? Look at the 15 year old that built the miniature nuclear reactor!
First of all, I am not building this reactor full scale. I'm thinking more like a miniature reactor. Like the one that 15 year old built in Michigan.
Good luck accomplishing what thousands of scientists around the world have tried to accomplish - making a nuclear reactor small. Didn't you even wonder WHY the reactors are so large? It's so they can build as thick a concrete wall around the core as possible to prevent any radiation escaping. Not to mention the challenges of building everything small scale. If one thing is out of places, enjoy your gaping hole in the garden or where ever you choose to attempt this.
i don't know about you guys but i think this thread is fucking comedy gold
i mean the 15 year old thinks he can run a nuclear reactor
does nobody see how funny this is?
And why does 2 quarters of the people in this thread think a 14 year old could not build a reactor? Look at the 15 year old that built the miniature nuclear reactor!
Yeah in collaboration with much more experienced people. People who probably knew how to use your and you're properly.
And why does 2 quarters of the people in this thread think a 14 year old could not build a reactor? Look at the 15 year old that built the miniature nuclear reactor!
2 quarters is a half. :downs:
You fail to grasp basic maths, how are you going to do this?
First of all, I am not building this reactor full scale. I'm thinking more like a miniature reactor. Like the one that 15 year old built in Michigan.
Oh, that guy. His reactor had no containment whatsoever. Except his house basement, I guess.
And why does 2 quarters of the people in this thread think a 14 year old could not build a reactor? Look at the 15 year old that built the miniature nuclear reactor!
Because the design of a commercial reactor costs hundreds of millions of dollars and requires hundreds of people in every field designing (and testing) the structure, electrical systems, mechanical systems, plumbing, security, ventilation, safety systems etc etc etc
All of which you can't legally do if you're not certified
Many of you misunderstood what I meant in the goals, the "Powering a city" goal is a long term goal, read the document then post. I even says I will first build a prototype reactor.
This seems a bit... extreme.
Then again, that's what we said about the plane and the nuclear bomb. Good luck, OP.
your children won't be very thankful for what you do.
he wont be able to have any
Oh, that guy. His reactor had no containment whatsoever
Why is he calling it a fusion reactor?
Edit:
OH!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fusor
@op Here you have a tutorial!
Best of luck on your attempts OP
Like the great cave once said :
"Throw science at a wall and see what sticks."
OP, do you realize that a gram of Thorium is about 800€?
Oh, that guy. His reactor had no containment whatsoever. Except his house basement, I guess.
That guy specifically says fusion, not fission. The only dangers with fusion are the escape of superheated plasma into the environment which will pretty much melt the skin off your flesh instantly. That's why fusion reactors need supermagnetic fields to prevent the plasma touching the walls.

Hahah, I remember that phone thread.
OP it's okay, we all had dreams like this at your age.
Then education happened and we figured, there are better and more 'sure' ways to make money
Not saying that it wouldn't make money if you actually did manage to get a full scale reactor going but to get there you'd need a lot more than what you have now
This idea doesnt have a chance
