Nice try. Dont forgot all the other stuff that happened on the chat too.
I was feeling artistic so I cracked open the ol' paint box and this is what I came up with. (WARNING LOTS OF PICS)
Refinished Thompson furniture

And my AK was looking too shiny and new so I roughened her up a bit and painted on some "rust" and "dirt"

It was actually really easy, the weathering method I use only took about ten minutes for all the mags, excluding drying time. I used the same technique on the grip and guards. Before the weathering it was a solid coat of olive drab, the weathering gives it that dirty, uneven look which the pictures make seem more like poor coverage on the olive.
The method I used to weather it was very simple, and uses paint rather than actual dirt, so it won't rub off or clog up internals. I can go over the technique step-by-step if anyone cares.
@ossumsauce: Thanks! I actually bought this AK for a Stalker loadout, and figured a matte black straight-from-the-factory gun would look really out of place. This is the first airsoft gun I've painted, so I wasn't sure what to expect, but it turned out very nicely, and the technique is extremely simple so should be easily replicable with other guns.
Please do so.
Well, now I've got two KWA guns. My H&K USP, and my Km4 cqb- no pictures of my M4, but I do have some of my USP.

I don't know why, but some of these AKs look a little overdone to me. When I get mine I'm probably just going to let it whether through normal use and since I'm going for a more modern and professional Russian look a beat up old AK would look a little dumb.

kinda agree

You'd be surprised. Russian weapons are issued and re-issued as long as they still work, and get pretty beat up as a result. The paint used on the 74 is also cheaper and poorer than what was used on the old AKMs, it wears down much more quickly.
That said, I'm going for a more Stalker/African mercenary look, so a dirty, rusty, scratched-up gun fits.
Please do so.
Already did, post #501:
It's really easy, you just need to have the right materials. Basically I took a tan acrylic paint (specifically, Vallejo Model Color Khaki, which is about $3 a bottle, although any acrylic khaki-type paint will do), thinned it to somewhere between 1:5 and 1:10 with water, and then applied it all over the magazine (one side at a time) with a paintbrush. I kept the magazine level to dry, so the paint would form pools instead of running all over. The paint pooling produces a realistic mottling effect, but because it's just one layer it looks very fake, so there's one more step. I waited for the paint to fully dry, then took a paper towel, balled it up, added some water to make it damp, and vigorously scrubbed the magazines with it. It buffs off much of the paint, giving it a more random, built-up look, and leaves the paint intact in the recesses (in this case, in the ribbing along the front of the magazines), so the weathering is strongest in the crevices where dirt and mud would naturally build up.
So, in summary, apply thinned paint all over, wait for it to dry, scrub with a damp cloth or paper towel. Done. Piece of cake.
Let me know if you have any questions.
I think non weathered weapons look better, but each to their own I suppose
A well-worn AK looks great to me, but any other gun weathered, not so much.
I was originally going to let mine weather itself, but the paint CYMA used is so thick I think it would have taken the rest of my life for it to weather.
I used some threads on red alliance as examples for weathering. Lots of good stuff there
I think, personally, the best way of weathering guns is just to use it and abuse it a little, not to the extent that you're throwing it at walls, but just enough to give it some wear naturally.
I've only used my M14 once a month for 3 or 4 months, and it has some quite nice wear on it. The stock has a fair few scratches on it and it's been stood on a few times and dropped in the dirt, the metal parts are all worn on the edges, and the plastic barrel cover is as pristine as it was when it came out of the package for some reason. I'd take some pictures to show the wear on it if i can find a decent camera.
Anyway, my scope mount arrived finally:

That stock is be-a-utiful
Heck the whole gun is. But please, get another strap. Leather would be the business.
I'm planning on painting my ak in a similar way, but will let it weather naturally as I play games.

The strap i have is the one it came with, a leather strap is on my shopping list.
I'm surprised that one hasn't snapped yet considering how thin it is and how heavy the gun is.
What scope mount did you buy?

Well in South Ossetia some VDV troops did have beat up AKs and these were the professional units, not conscripts.

But then these guys have brand new looking AKs.

Well, not even AKs work forever, sometimes they have to issue new weapons.
or refurbish them !!!
Yeah, I'm not saying every Russian gun is a beat-up POS, but they tend to hang on to worn-down rifles without external maintenance much longer than the US Army. So it's entirely plausible for a Russian rifle to be pretty scratched, dirty, weathered, etc.
Edit: I wonder where exactly that picture was taken, I drove through the South Ossetia region of Georgia a few times.
the US actually just leaves all their small arms overseas because it's cheaper to make new ones than ship them back.
Sounds..uh..smart
