Tilda Swinton has confirmed she's playing The Ancient One in Doctor Strange

All hope for AoU's redemption has been lost.
I'm ready once again to open a debate about how much Age of Ultron sucked balls, but maybe time must run its course a bit longer
Why does it always seem that whenever Joss Whedon releases a movie that people aren't super taken with, he immediately goes on damage control and blames the studio for ruining everything in post, but then when asked to release a director's cut, he refuses?
He's only made one bad movie though? He only wrote Alien Resurrection and even then the suggestions he got from the producers (at least one, anyway) were given because the producers hoped it would ruin the movie.
He's only made one bad movie though? He only wrote Alien Resurrection and even then the suggestions he got from the producers (at least one, anyway) were given because the producers hoped it would ruin the movie.
Why would a producer hope his own movie to be ruined?
Whedon had to rewrite the script in a way that would bring back the Ripley character, a task he found difficult. The idea of cloning was suggested by producers David Giler and Walter Hill, who opposed the production of Alien: Resurrection, as they thought it would ruin the franchise.
I can't find a YouTube link to it, but the actual quote of Walter Hill saying he wanted to kill the franchise is in the making of doc in the Anthology.
That doesn't explain why, to me.
I mean, if you're a producer for a movie, you're invested in it. You do your best to make it succeed, regardless of what it is because you're invested in it.

So, it was both of their ideas at some level.
He's only made one bad movie though? He only wrote Alien Resurrection and even then the suggestions he got from the producers (at least one, anyway) were given because the producers hoped it would ruin the movie.
He has the same tendency for TV shows. Whatever bad happens it's always the studios fault.
He has the same tendency for TV shows. Whatever bad happens it's always the studios fault.
So that's why Firefly and Dollhouse went off the air
Whedon just needs to take a chill pill. It feels like he's constantly trying to live up to some imaginary standard as "the god of geeks" or whatever, and whenever he falls short of that vague, imaginary line, he throws a huge hissyfit about how it's everyone's fault but his.
Like, I feel like someone needs to sit him down and let his head deflate a bit, explain to him that not everything he makes is gonna be pure gold and acknowledging/learning from mistakes is the only way he'll ever grow as an artist.
I love the majority of things he's made (Cabin in the Woods and Doctor Horrible especially), but it's like "oh no, everyone isn't heaping endless praise on my strong female character who is super tough and perfect but also cries in one scene, better abandon this sinking ship and lock everyone else below deck."
He's a really talented guy for the most part, but he needs to take a deep breath and stop being so [sp]sensitive.[/sp]
Cabin in the Woods
Isn't that one of the Joss Whedon things that people accredit to Joss Whedon when it was really mostly someone else, in this case Drew Goddard?
(Can we talk for a second how Goddard got fucked in the ass? Signed to do Daredevil for Marvel, happily jumped ship to do Sinister Six and then found himself back on the ship he jumped from when Sony borrowed Spider-Man to Marvel, with Marvel just going 'oh, you want to do Spider-Man? that's nice, remember when you left Daredevil? we still do')
That doesn't explain why, to me.

Unless your name is secretly Max Bialystock.
This is it. I did my best to avoid ALL Ant-Man spoilers. In 6 hours I'll be watching this mamma jamma of a movie.
I mean, I like a lot of Whedon stuff, but god damn do you get tired of certain things after a while, especially his persona. I have the same problem (but more exaggerated) with the current Doctor Who showrunner, he acts like he's super clever, but the story lines just come off as asspulled and bullshit.
New X-Men movie looks interesting

Pfshahahahahha... I'm sorry but Apocalypse looks ridiculous. Like a cheap rubberhead alien put in the costume from Stargate that was painted blue.

I'm sure the actual film will make him look better than the production photos there.

He looks a bit like Ivan Ooze but I won't hold my breath. I thought Quicksilver looked stupid before DOFP and I really liked him in the movie.

He was cool in DoFP but that doesn't change that his costume DID look stupid and impractical there.

I can't believe they went through with Psylockes leotard design, especially when she's currently got a way more conservative one currently.
Someone took a shot at fixing Apocalypse

From EW
>"X-Men: Apocalypse" is set in 1982.
>Apocalypse is the first mutant, who is awakened by the events of "X-Men: Days of Future Past" changing the timeline. He finds the world in turmoil and decides to cull the majority of Earth's population, humans and mutants alike, so that the survivors can build a better world. Apocalypse regards himself as the creator of Humanity and makes no distinction between humans and mutants.
>Storm is Apocalypse's first Horseman and loyal follower. He finds her living as a pickpocket in Cairo and gives her new purpose.
>Archangel is found in a fight club in Berlin, where he is on display as a sideshow freak.
>Psylocke is found in Russia, acting as a spy for Caliban, a mutant broker who bargains to assist Apocalypse in his efforts.
>Magneto has given up his mutant supremacy worldviews and is living a quiet life with a new wife in a small village in Poland where people are unaware that he's a mutant. However, once his powers are discovered and his wife is murdered by the townspeople, Magneto falls into despair and is recruited by Apocalypse.
>Mystique is operating on her, rescuing young mutants from human persecution, among them Nightcrawler. Upon learning of Magneto joining forces with Apocalypse, she returns to the Xavier Institute for Gifted Youngsters to recruit Charles Xavier to help her, bringing Nightcrawler alone.
>Xavier has found a group of students including Cyclops, Havok, Jean Grey, Jubilee and Quicksilver, but is only teaching them to hide their powers so they can integrate themselves to human society. Apocalypse's emergence is what forces him to teach them to fight and eventually become the X-Men.
>There'll be three pivotal love subplots in the movie: Scott and Jean, Mystique and Magneto and Xavier and Moira McTaggert.
>The young mutants are polar opposites of their future counterparts: Cyclops is a troublemaking "bad boy", Jean is insecure and unable to control her powers, Storm is a mutant supremacist and Nightcrawler is a wisecracking trickster.
>Nightcrawler is the comic relief.
>Cyclops, Jean, Storm and Nightcrawler are the movie's central characters.
>There'll be massive action scenes with "widespread destruction" brought by Apocalypse.
>Concept art confirms a fight between Cyclops and Jean against Storm.
>Singer views this as the final chapter of the trilogy chronicling the birth of the X-Men, and could be his last "X-Men" movie as the director.
A whole bunch of wacky stuff.
It's good to know the Bryan Singer still doesn't give the slightest shit about anything from the comics.

I stopped caring about that long ago. At least he does a good job - in his own way.

Where'd you rank it alongside the rest of the MCU?

I thought that would be a given? Was there a high chance of this not happening? :v:
Where'd you rank it alongside the rest of the MCU?
I guess it's 5 in my Top Five MCU movies.
Which are Winter Soldier > Guardians > Avengers > Iron Man > Ant Man.
Iron Man > Ant Man?
I kind of expected it to beat that, that's kind of dimming my expectations a bit.
Saw Ant-Man a few hours ago, went in with no expectations after feeling a bit empty during Avengers 2. Really, really enjoyable. Standalone enough where it didn't feel like setup for Avengers 3, like a Guardians of the Galaxy vibe. Paul Rudd plays Scott Lang as he should--comically--and it works really well. Ant-Man definitely established itself as a standalone Marvel film series.
Gonna tag the rest of this as spoilers.
[sp]I REALLY enjoyed the subtle exploration of the strangeness (after Scott purposely damages his modulator(is that the word?)). They played it off as a death sentence, but what it really did was introduce a really strange part of the Marvel universe. I was really thrilled that they actually went through with it, sending Scott into what effectively was the fourth dimension. It was short enough of a sequence where it could be used to build tension, but also pave the way for some really strange shit that we'll hopefully see in Doctor Strange's film (or even before!). Personally, I feel like it'll be important in the future of the MCU, because they've now laid the groundwork and we know that they aren't afraid to delve into dimensional stuff. Pretty based, IMO.
I would say the only problem is Corey Stoll. He feels like (and portrays) a trope of a villain, like his only motivation is that he can't get over Frank Pym's rejection(?) of him, and so he plans on selling the Yellowjacket suit to Hydra (and apparently SHIELD didn't hear about this at all even though he was trying to market his technology?). Just didn't seem totally coherent. Regardless, the action and whatnot still manages to suck you in. Like, the stakes are obviously pretty big if that technology gets out, and that serves to build up the entire film. It's not impossibly big like Ultron, it's just the right size for the film (har har). Yellowjacket and Ant-Man fight sequence was really great though. Theater was roaring with laughter at the right times.
Also worth noting that most of the film plays like an Oceans film, maybe even a more comical Mission Impossible. Really was a nice shift away from the heavy-handed superhero trope mold that Age of Ultron found itself inescapably asphyxiated by. It's like Guardians in that it's a very unique (and highly sensitive) concept, but they really pulled it off. I haven't read any of the Ant-Man comics, but now I'm pretty interested. Good on Marvel for executing this film well.[/sp]
If you're looking for a rating relative to the entire MCU, I'd say mine goes:
1. Guardians of the Galaxy
2. Avengers
3/4. Ant-Man
4/3. Captain America: The Winter Soldier
5. Iron Man
Two post-credits scenes by the way, stay all the way through. Won't say anything about them, but they're both really worthwhile.
Addendum:
I'm not terribly into comics, but I'm really into film, so my ratings are based off of how much I enjoyed each film as such. Not really measuring it by how well they brought my favorite characters to life, but rather, how well the film itself is executed. Ant-Man was as good as Winter Soldier to me, but feel free to disagree.
