We're not talking critically
The fact is they're massive money spinners. It's the last part which the audience has already invested in. Even if the attitude is "I've wasted about 6 hours of my life on this, I mayswell see how it ends". It's the last time to see this universe on screen. It's the big sword clashing action finale which will no doubt be in all the trailers. It's the best part of the book on screen. It will bring in an audience like a mother fucker.
What will be the money maker of 2015? That's a far more interesting debate. I'm quite surprised people are saying Age of Ultron will smash Star Wars VII (by a huge margin). When Harrison ford can sustain a minor ankle injury and end up all over the news. Then throw in Batman VS Superman, Bond, Hunger Games finale and Minions. It's gonna be one of the biggest years for the industry ever. It'll be quite interesting to see how it all pans out.
the first hobbit film got 303 million, the second one got 258 million.
and, from the same year: django with 162 million, TASM with 262 million, the hunger games with 408 million, and of course the avengers with 623 million.
captain america TWS got 256 million. i doubt that the next hobbit film will get much more than that, especially with that 40 million drop from the first to the second movie
Current list of 2015 sequels and predicted blockbusters
Avengers: Age of Ultron, Star Wars VII, Terminator: Genesis, Jurassic World, Fast and the Furious 7, Minions, Ant-Man, Bond 24, Hunger Games, Mockingjay Part 2, Mission Impossible V, Kung Fu Panda 3, Spongebob 2, Hotel Transylvania 2, Assassin's Creed, Ted 2, The Fantastic Four, Mad Max: Fury Road, Taken 3, Magic Mike XX, The Bourne Legacy 2 and to end it all with shit, Alvinand the CGImunks 4
Expectations at minimum, but I expect around 8-10 billion or more is expected from the box office revenue of 2015. Thus '2015: A Money Odyssey'
I expect I'll be spending around 150-200 on movie tickets and beverage for 2015 at the theater
so many of those are either unneeded sequels or unneeded spinoffs

Jurassic World and Terminator: Genesis are actually reboots/sequels (combined) which basically create a new movie, but with a whole differant cast (notable exception being Arnold returning as the Terminator in T:G) and same plot device as the previous films. Jurassic World is basically Jurassic Park but with Chris Pratt, while Terminator: Genesis will take the plots from both the first and 2nd movies into a new time travel film with Arnold.

you could totally add a laugh track after almost every single one of johnny cage's lines and it wouldn't feel out of place

The concept of that story is so fucking cool, and they could lead it to World War Hulk being an Avengers movie or something.
yes
especially if this film series is going to 2028
we need at least one more hulk film, and with ruffalo in it planet hulk would be a perfect line to adapt especially if guardians does well (and based on the trailers/marketing, i can't see it not raping the august box office).

As much as I like the hulk, I don't think he translated into movies pretty well. Watching a giant green berserker wreck shit can be fun, but 90+ minutes of it can get old and repetitive really fast.
that's why they need to make the hulk smarter. most of his good and more well known stories have him talking for a reason
Marvel should release more feature-length cartoons like DC does. Batman has a ton of really well made animated adaptations of his comic books, stuff that couldn't possibly work in movie form. The Dark Knight Returns is really good, so was Under the Red Hood.
Similar things for Hulk's storylines would work great, especially since it really allows the animators and writers to go balls-deep insane and do almost whatever they want, although I'd assume marvel is a bit more limited on that side of things due to being owned by Disney.
