There was a post somewhere where somebody had modified tcomms to where all talk was basically Jojo's "your next line is". That was pretty fun to read.
That was me, [sp]Dio[/sp]. [t]http://i.imgur.com/P1SxDHf.png[/t]
I don't know why but I was expecting this video This game looks interesting tho, I wonder what happened to the original developer and what he did with it after the code got stolen.
Goonstation is lovely and I play on it regularly, I'm a mentor (think a help hotline for game mechanics). The community is really quite pleasant, and it's at this point way better optimized than most other codebases. Pretty much the only time it lags is if somebody does some insane shit or bombs literally the entire station. Anybody who tells you it's objectively bad because "hyuk hyuk goons" is a chump. I don't even think it's that far knitted into the average SA culture at this point. EDIT: Also like the only ways to get in trouble are to be a horrid shit (see: racist/homophobic/etc), kill people for no reason, or metagame. This has an amazing effect of making everyone on r/ss13 call Goon a hugbox and makes the average idiot claim that the admins get 'triggered' when someone yells "I HATE NIGNOGS" or something over the comms those people get banned pretty much immediately its really funny too because other servers are way more anal about small details than goon, on goon you basically arent even expected to do your job, but you also arent expected to murder everyone. the depth of the gameplay and exploration/etc makes it ACTUALLY INTERESTING to do something other than kill people
I don't know if it's a hugbox, I don't play there and I never will, but I just want to point out that's exactly what someone in a hugbox would say.
My best traitor round was back on cog1 as a geneticist it was with the old genetics system, where getting good superpowers was kind of easier I got really lucky and got both X-Ray Vision and TK pretty early on then grabbed some weapons, a camera monitor and went out into space, where hopefully nobody would find me using the camera monitor and my powers, I could kill anybody on a security camera - which means anybody anywhere bludgeoning people to death using extinguishers, grabbing people and strangling them out of nowhere, activating grenades and putting them on random tables I sent the whole station into a wild panic and felt like a god, being everywhere and nowhere at the same time eventually people figured out that I wasn't a mere cloaker and started cutting the security cameras, effectively crippling the AI it's the most fun I ever had
I loved this guys EVE review
I am Chips Ahoy
I loved SS13. I almost never behave like an ass. But one day as the Chemist or Scientist I believe, on TG station I managed to make the most amazing bomb. A guy people suggested was the traitor was running along the hall that links the escape ship, medbay and the rest of the station. Of course the area was crowded as fuck. I activate the bomb and get permabanned. :joy:
I've always been surprised at the lack of decent successors to this game considering how long people have played it. Most die out pretty quickly in development. Love it when you can find an admin that can actually see the difference between having fun and griefing.
I think a lot of those projects grossly underestimate the amount of work it'd take. You won't be making this into a commercial game, because it's so niche you'll only get a small amount of players, or you rip out the charm and depth of it and don't ever replace SS13. Pretty much has to be a bunch of nerds that love it volunteering over years to make it. A lot of them also try to make it 3d or have a more realistic art style which I heavily disagree with. The art really complements the gameplay. The only issue with the current game is that it's written IIRC, and the engine itself is not really made to feel responsive, so it's just a laggy mess. Also I haven't really been able to find a server I really enjoy in awhile. I like lifeweb, but it's only up on weekends and it can be a huge pain in the ass to play because randy-kun likes to force you to keep a bunch of shit in spreadsheets. Also lifeweb rounds are usually veeeery long, which can suck because you die even easier than in spacestation 13. I used to really like paradise station because it was a pretty perfect mix between RP and fun. But the admins became really strict over time. Even if doing something like releasing the singularity will be very useful for your goals, you can still get in huge trouble. I blame tajarans.
One thing this review doesn't touch on is how absolutely long the rounds in this can get. It mentions they can slow to a crawl, but that's really an understatement. Round can be as short as a half hour or as long as 5 hours, and depending on what you did that shift, having the shuttle come mid-experimentation can be pretty heartbreaking when you know you'll have to do it all over again. That said, this game does a lot that no other game can really do. It offers a groundbreaking simulation of what it's like to release a bunch of sociopaths onto a cramped tin can in space, and the results can be pretty damn funny. I recall with fondness the round in which I, a lonesome chemist, pumped my body full of regenerative chemicals and drifted space, constantly dying and healing through the damage until I came face to face with god himself who saw fit to bless me with an atomic basketball, which I then used to erase roughly 45% of the station with a chaos dunk. It was a good round.
Holy shit, I remember that. I was the mime who wandered into the holodeck, seen you shouting and screaming while hearing over the radio how everyone's panicking and trying to get off the station. I just stood there, closed my eyes and accepted my fate. I died like I lived, quickly and silently.
I activate the bomb and get permabanned. :joy:
this is what always put me off from trying this game. people always talk about how they do something clever or interesting and then get banned or punished when it pays off. that kind of highly anal atmosphere on top of the already new-player-unfriendliness doesn't sound very fun

It's bannable usually but they won't catch you unless you're VERY suspicious. Also not all servers are super shit. I don't think there are really any that walk the middle line unfortunately, they're generally either super lax or really strict.
Adminhelp beforehand telling them that you're new and "player name here" will be teaching you how to play if you don't want to get banned for this shit.
The chance is pretty low to be caught especially if you're just like two geneticists or scientists but yeah, if you know the admins especially this is probably a good idea too.
I am Chips Ahoy
Were you the clown on goonstation like 5 years ago? I haven't played much since then but I was always playing as Jesus Christ, also a clown
this is what always put me off from trying this game. people always talk about how they do something clever or interesting and then get banned or punished when it pays off. that kind of highly anal atmosphere on top of the already new-player-unfriendliness doesn't sound very fun
Honestly, if you're afraid of getting banned you really shouldn't be. I'd suggest trying out the Goon server where you're only gonna get banned for deliberately (as opposed to accidentally) killing an innocent, overtly racist jokes or metagaming. Pretty much anything else is permitted, so you ARE allowed to fuck up badly. It helps if you check the wiki but only security requires to be an experienced player (and security are whitelisted and are more akin to mallcops, really).

I found an old screenshot and turns out what REALLY happened was the admin at the time decided to just give me temp-admin for the round and said "Do as you damn well please". The result was something like this: [t]http://i.imgur.com/NbRzoup.png[/t] a side note: a few weeks later, I got a second opportunity. After completing a difficult set of objectives while turned into a chimpanzee, I came into possession of "the original B-Ball". Then this happened. [t]http://i.imgur.com/p2Vhvk5.png[/t]
I haven't played this game in for like 6 years, started getting kicked by some shitty multi-box detection algorithm on goon station, kept getting it reversed than I would get banned again so I gave up. One of the best memories I had was when I got kidnapped by a murderous clown as the bar tender when the station started falling apart and people where dying. It was like a climax of a Hollywood film where one of the party members comes out as evil during a critical moment. After he gave a long speech about the deeds he had committed and me being his final art piece I managed to break free in a life or death struggle when he made a mistake, I took the scalpel he had and stabbed out his eyes and knocked him unconscious. I emerged from a room to find a broken station and almost everyone dead.
I don't know if it's a hugbox, I don't play there and I never will, but I just want to point out that's exactly what someone in a hugbox would say.
my god you really ARE a chump like i'm really sorry that's just hoo wow good GOSH good GOLLY GOD DANG i am at a loss for words anyway I love this game as a whole, but the atmosphere and mechanics depth of goon (and also the fact it runs smoother nowadays than even a self-run tg instance on a powerful computer/good connection) is why i've been so hooked, along with the community that isn't populated with people who 24/7 act as if they have something to prove by being edgy dorks edit: i think a lot of the misperceptions of goon's culture are based off of how it used to be a long time ago, nowadays it's far less deliberately rude, less of the shitcurity stuff, etc.

So much has changed in SS13 that I find it kind of hard to play outside of Goon. I feel as though a lot of servers miss out on what I enjoyed about the game (the station collapsing into chaos due to the plans of antagonists and the players) and either go full-Hitler banned for metagaming for running in the halls and thus never allow the collapse to happen, or just have absolute chaos out from the very start of the game.
Getting banned is part of the SS13 experience. Also heavy rp is the best to be a shitter on.
I miss painting the halls brown with my own feces. Why did they have to go and remove poo? :(
I miss painting the halls brown with my own feces. Why did they have to go and remove poo? :(
I remember a virologist antag made some fucked up virus that made everybody explosively shit themselves and puke everywhere. The station was ruined.

the first time i played this game i chose clown and got welded into a locker and spaced [editline]2nd October 2016[/editline] my favorite memory of this game is when a friend and i went spess exploring. we abandoned the mining station and found many of the secret places out in the space surrounding goonstation, from zombie stations to secret pirate radio stations. there's a lot of cool shit you can find there. we found an abandoned station that had a space yeti on it which pretty much instantly killed us both, though. next round, we were prepared. i had spawned as a traitor miner but abandoned both positions to explore the expanse. i used my traitorbux to buy a laser sword. we went back to that yeti station and i murdered him and stole his infinitoast. after pilfering spess for all of its gold, i returned to the space station decked out in ghost goggles and the clothes of the warden from superjail to find most people had been killed and the last remaining traitor was about to win. as i had "abandoned the cause", i was no longer considered a traitor. we met face to face in the escape hall. i was the last remaining hope of the station, and i was determined to save everyone. he shot me in the face with an energy gun and i quickly died.
My best non-traitor round happened really recently, like a few weeks ago Still can't believe how it all went down Started off as a normal genetics grinding round, but about 10 minutes in some madman managed to acquire a plutonium core and chaos dunked the station Most people seemed to not really care for some reason and went about their jobs I packed my shit and ran for the closest available pod bay, as I was getting close to it I could see fire and powerful explosions behind me, which luckily never reached or managed to knock me out Me and the other survivors decided to spend our time on the space diner instead There were about 10 of us in total, just standing there chilling with Shitty Bill and other diner regulars About 5 minutes later, I got bored and decided to head back to the station and started walking towards my pod Not even 5 seconds after I started walking away, three traitor pipebombs exploded on the diner, leaving only me and a mechanic alive I found out my pod got hijacked and none of the other pods were unlocked, but luckily the surviving mechanic managed to get the diner teleporter running and got us to Escape, which was somehow mostly unharmed after the dunk Little did we know there was a Obsidian Crowned c-sabered murderous traitor on the station who killed everybody on sight While he was slaughtering other survivors, I managed to get into the medical part of the Escape Shuttle, which the kind AI bolted down for me Eventually I was alone in the shuttle with the traitor, who couldn't get inside my little room For a while, it was just awkward silence and me contemplating how lucky I was to still be alive About 3 seconds before the shuttle arrived at centcom, the Obsidian Crown finally took the traitor's life, robbing him of one of his traitor objectives I was the only one who survived the entire ordeal, it was fantastic
space station 13 can be summed up in one image [t]http://img.pandawhale.com/post-38275-Community-Troy-walks-in-on-dis-GIxB.gif[/t]
