Goon station, where you'll only get banned if what you did wasn't funny :v:
Like my main gimmick when I was a bartender was lacing drinks with stuff that MIGHT kill you, like a drink that froze you and teleported you around the station, or outside the station. I always warned people that my drinks were laced with stuff, but people drank them anyway because hilarity could ensue, like teleporting into an area you're not supposed to be.
Also even if it's outdated, I do recommend watching these as he explains jobs and the general atmosphere of the game pretty well:

Do we still really need/want a non BYOND version of the game when it runs so smooth now?

I still don't really like BYOND
wish someone would actually kickstart a SS13 clone, or at least do it with a larger team
previous attempts all seemed like on-the-side hobby projects, not full-time investments

BYOND will one day die. Not in the near future, but eventually interest in developing for the platform will die out. And it's pretty limiting as it stands.
One dream is if it was moved over to a more stable engine.
its all fun and games till you enter maintenance tunnels to find three stalker-meme spouting russian vdv next to a campfire playing on accordions and trombones
Opposite. Goonstation is an underpopulated labyrinth of machinery that's either way too fast or way too slow. The fact that it's run by goons is also a big minus. And this is coming from someone who started on goonstation.
are you high or something?
I'm a coder on goonstation and I'm not a member of SA

we are ok with people placing incredibly poisonous chemicals in glasses because people aren't forced to drink them. People have fun toying with their own lives and that makes the game fun IMO.
The fastest round of ss13 I ever played was I was a warden and immediately went to the bar to order a shot of whiskey. The bar was ominously quiet and empty, while I was chatting with the bartender I became paralysed. Before I could manage calling for help or getting someone's attention I was dragged into the back room and mutilated. It was a changling round, and I had fallen victim a whopping 2 minutes in.
One of the most entertaining rounds I had was from a few years ago where by stroke of luck I was a traitor clown. But fuck objectives, I decided instead to start my own cult dedicated to the worship of the HONKmother. Building a fortress in the middle of the corridor in front of the kitchen counter I soon found myself with a small gathering of loyal followers. Of course things soon descended into chaos as sec didn't take kindly to my secession from the rest of the station and we were attacked on all fronts, especially after throwing a banana bomb into the corridor out of boredom just to see what would happen. Still, was fine while it lasted and after making my last stand I used the camo projector to disguise myself as a banana until finally someone finished me with a toolbox to the head.
What you see below is the aftermath of this.

The best thing about goon is that if there is a nuke round you're free to unbolt the nuke and mail it to engineering to be placed into the crusher. On other stations you can get banned for that
the server this review had plenty of footage from, vg, is currently going through 3 times the players (100+) and no one remembers how to turn the panic bunker on
my byond is broken and i can't see this hell [del]on earth[/del] in space but god bless

Apparently the guy got banned for some minor shit and one of the admins was trying to keep him banned because of the video.

Amazing.
my god you really ARE a chump
like i'm really sorry that's just
hoo wow good GOSH good GOLLY GOD DANG i am at a loss for words
anyway I love this game as a whole, but the atmosphere and mechanics depth of goon (and also the fact it runs smoother nowadays than even a self-run tg instance on a powerful computer/good connection) is why i've been so hooked, along with the community that isn't populated with people who 24/7 act as if they have something to prove by being edgy dorks
edit: i think a lot of the misperceptions of goon's culture are based off of how it used to be a long time ago, nowadays it's far less deliberately rude, less of the shitcurity stuff, etc.
i'm sorry????
im at a loss for words too mate, why are you acting like such a dick
Goon has been keeping upwards of 70 players lately, which is a bit insane but can still be fun given the rules are more lenient.

my god the grey tide must be horrifying
CM currently has 150 players which is far too many IMO
CM currently has 150 players which is far too many IMO
It's all fun and mass marine slaughter until two fuckers hide in space and one clever bastard rests on the gore-ridden hangar floor playing dead, resulting in a neverending round after the Xenos murdered everyone else.
First time trying this game and was on CM. I saw as a Ghost how the last organized group of 14 marines, commander included, welded themselves up in the station's bridge while the aliens took over the station.
Then as they held out, the commander got in contact with the rest of the individual survivors through radio (either locked themselves up in prison cells, hid in small rooms etc), and gave them the mission to run and escape with the emergency shuttles. While those survivors did that, the commander and his crew would distract the aliens and sacrifice themselves. And that's exactly what happened, those 14 marines fought the aliens once the door got breached and killed most of em except the queen and some drones. By the time they all died, the shuttle was sealed and with 8 marines inside. By the time the queen arrived, it was too late for her to have enough time to breach the shuttle's door.
Pretty good for a first impression
this is what always put me off from trying this game. people always talk about how they do something clever or interesting and then get banned or punished when it pays off. that kind of highly anal atmosphere on top of the already new-player-unfriendliness doesn't sound very fun
wouldn't calling bombing a crowd (if you're not an antagonist) interesting
if you don't punish stuff like that you get shitters who want to be the next cuban pete every single round

What the hell? Y'know I've heard /vg/station can be fun but this seems like a cancerous attitude if this sort of thing flies.
I haven't touched SS13 in a few months but is CM worth a try? I hear a lot of bad press about people criticising it because some admins are more interested in enforcing rules than allowing people to have fun (like banning people for running away from a self destructing predator or blowing up a bunch of aliens by shooting a fuel tank) but at the same time it looks like an entertaining gamemode.

Security and AI rounds are just you getting screamed at unnecessarily for the length of it.

On the old NoX Station we allowed people to have fun if they could justify it. People would turn on a shitty security officer if they couldn't shoot straight and just leave them stripped naked. Clowns were allowed to do anything to anyone, and people could do anything to the clown.
We kinda "knew" if you were just there to create a shit show though, but if you asked for permission before hand, like handing out funny pills or making the captain retarded, we would usually grant it for laughs.
If a station is too serious then that creates a shit magnet for trolls to blow up the station.
Am I the only person who enjoys playing AI and sec?
AI can be fun depending on what kind of round it is. Seems like most often it's "AI pls open the door". I don't play sec that much, but goonstation has the detective which is fun to play.

Killed a Syndie and took his ID to their shuttle once. Fed their nuke to Lord Singuloth. Boy were they pissed.

TBF most admins I have ran into are fucking cancer incarnate.
AtomiCal has the right of things. The entire game is filled with various gags and to try and make a round too serious is just asking for shit to go down.
once toad and i created 5 plates of chips, each poisoned with the intention of killing 5 crew members
however, all of the chips were eaten by one guy, who promptly got extremely fat and would not stop farting
fast forward 10 minutes, and an entire separate player-built station is ablaze because fat fart man farted onto a lit welder and caught fire, igniting the gas already in there, setting at least 15 other players on fire
I kind of want to try this now.
I kind of want to try this now.
Game has a really steep learning curve which throws a lot of people off of it. If you can get past that you'll do fine.
...unless you play security.
I don't get this point either
sec is the only role where I can actually taze the fuck out of badmen and throw them into prison, most likely ruining their entire round
doing that as a vigilante assistant you'll likely end up behind bars yourself
