As the video mentioned, reading the wiki of the respective station you're playing on is a must for any new player. Keep it open for learning about how to make a certain drink/how to build things/etc.

tbh though that's mostly because 90% of sec players are terrible.

I enjoy my AI rounds but people are so annoying.
"AI OPEN YOUR DOOR"
"No"
"AI IS ROGUE"
"My law says that I can't harm Humans and letting you in to modify my laws would be harming Hum-"
"AI IS ROGUE AI IS ROGUE AI IS ROGUE"
Inaction clauses are so dumb though
When I'm Asimov AI I open doors to pretty much anywhere except armory and even then I sometimes do because doing so isn't necessarily causing harm to anyone. Asimov laws are pretty bad for the AI.
Goon got rid of the inaction clause and AI is so much saner with it.

We had a round like that last night. Some shitter assistant tried to blather about the AI being rogue to which it just replied "I always saw myself as more of a salmon color really" it was pretty funny. We laughed, it laughed, it activated the self-destruct, we stopped laughing, it kept laughing... Then we all died.
Reminds me of the time I used to run a relatively lax server, and I kept playing as a captain named Dwight D. Eisenhower, and around the Mayan "Doomsday" of 2012 a massive virus outbreak happened and I had to abandon a guy on the station for the sake of quarantine.
Then the HoS came out of one of the emergency closets near evac, and beat me to death. Good times, and it was a constant thing like he was a traitor.

Goon's law 2 alleviates that since it makes you follow chain of command
Am I the only person who enjoys playing AI and sec?
I love AI, especially because the laws are pretty much intentionally written to be flawed it provides lots of room to be a complete cunt or a really nice AI. It's one thing sadly tho that keeps me off of goonstation, the way the camera works is just suck a pain in the ass unless they changed it
Hate sec tho, ACAB.
I always come back to ss13 because of how much fun it is to see chaos and non sense things happening like this:

I can sorta see why that /vg/station madmin got so upset at Lord Mandalore's video. SS13 is one of those niche games that is enormously susceptible to the Eternal September phenomenon. Mostly every round depends on a moderately-sized crew of people who (mostly) know what they're doing to ensure that the station keeps running long enough for the interesting chaos to happen. A flood of mildly-interested newbies into every server strains both the station and the server itself.
Of course, this doesn't excuse this guy's "NORMIES GET OUT REEEEE" response, but it does mostly justify the "dude what the hell" responses from the rest of the /vg/ general.

Considering /vg/ made the art judging by context, it's more like even they're befuddled by the sudden admin drama. He did ask the admins about recording footage and all.
Besides, while it's frustrating to get greytide, for the skilled players it's pretty much a new wave of naive fresh meat.

Believe it or not, some players enjoy having rounds without an unending tide of shitters and noobs occupying all the jobs. Imagine wanting to be a Janitor or a Security Officer when there's fifty Assistants, and one in five of them is just looking to meme on people. Imagine wanting to be a Scientist or Quartermaster when Mining is occupied by people who need help getting their internals on.
For a griffhugging shitler, Eternal Greytide is nothing but fun. For someone who wants to make a spessfort, or get their designated end-game job products made, or [del]erotically[/del] roleplay a chaplain or mime, it's going to be more annoying than anything else.
So, did you guys know gloves in SS13 use a Simons Coefficient variable in their code? That's such a detail you wouldn't think a game would do would you? Just shows how much depth they put into it.
Am I the only person who enjoys playing AI and sec?
Security is fun when it doesn't collapse and all the players are experienced in it slightly. Having that right amount of competent team mates can make it more fun. IE it makes the round slightly less free of shit heads who want to cause trouble 4nr, and ruin other players rounds, and it gives the antags more creative ways of trying to do mass slaughter. Though some players are able to abuse mechanics to such a great extent that they'll do nothing or ghost when they're not an antag.
My best memory from a multiplayer game has to be this one time in ss13.
I like to play a disgruntled medical borg who wants to main and kill everyone around him, but he can't due to his laws. (This has gotten me killed so many times, despite me correctly stating my laws)
Anyways, I'm doing my thing when a man in full syndicate gear approaches me. He presents his ID and proves to me he's the roboticist. He emags me and removes my laws. He tells me to quietly kill as many people as I could, but if he was questioned he'd rat me out. I told him I'd rat him out too. We had an understanding and went our separate ways.
So I'm tricking all these people to follow me into the maintenance tunnels and then either killing them with one of my weapons, or just blowing them out of the airlock.
Eventually I hear over the intercom that my pal the roboticist has gone nuts and it killing people in the break room.
I zip over to the room to help my buddy out when the escape shuttle is called. I ignore it and head to him.
I find him standing on a table surrounded by bodies. I tell him about my body count and he's surprised but he's like "well cool dude. Lets get to the escape shuttle, we're gonna be the only survivors." SO me and him book it, stunning and murdering anyone who gets in out way. He gets injured, and I'm pretty damaged by all this fighting, but we make it.
We're then greeted by a group of syndies, one of whom has the same ID as the roboticist.
That one orders me to kill the real roboticist, and I have no choice but to comply.
I tell him through my robotic tears that he was the only organic I wanted to spare. He just said "I know bro" as I launched him into space.
Before I can think of a way to get revenge, the syndies start talking about how they are going to get the nuke codes or something, when a fucking assistant shows up with a bomb and blows us all the fuck up. The round ended soon after.

I haven't touched SS13 in a few months but is CM worth a try? I hear a lot of bad press about people criticising it because some admins are more interested in enforcing rules than allowing people to have fun (like banning people for running away from a self destructing predator or blowing up a bunch of aliens by shooting a fuel tank) but at the same time it looks like an entertaining gamemode.
The rules of Colonial Marines are straightforward. Don't kill other marines for no reason, roleplay that you have no prior knowledge of the aliens, don't do things outside your jobs capabilities (like a marine performing surgery), etc.
However, there are a lot of unwritten rules like the ones you mentioned that give Colonial Marines a bad rep.
Are some of them stupid? Yes. Will you get banned for breaking these unwritten rules? No, just a warning at worst. Can you call the admins cancer/Hitler/xeno-loving-cucks in OOC after the fact? Of course; because your insults are probably true.
I have been playing CM for about a month and have not been banned from it. It is a very fun gamemode that brings out the combat element of SS13 that I never felt I was getting in other servers. The medium RP is just right, you don't have to roleplay blinking, but you can't spout memes in regular conversation. In the end, you have plenty of time for human massacring or alien genocide fun. Please give it a try!

Pretty much because it wasn't much of a game for awhile, more like a science sim. Also explains why byond was a great choice for the original creators at the time imo, byond simplifies a lot of things like not requiring you to write any networking code, which hurts responsiveness and performance, but for sims and roleplay games that are made with byond, shit doesn't matter.
like just look at this old 2006 screenshot of the station

whole lotta science and atmos stuff, ain't no shitcurity or antags yet. Reading through any server's code is pretty interesting
does anybody happen to have a picture of the old donut station? that's when I first played it and it'd be nice to see again

I recall it having an escape shuttle and the very bottom of the map
I've always wanted to actually play this but playing on US servers is painful and I'd rather hang myself by the balls on a skyscraper before I enter a russian server.

Really? I think it pretty much plays the same, lots of servers I've played on wound up being european without me noticing because it's shit either way.
Yeah, biggest issue is the server taking its sweet time to process shit and lag in general. Ping is like the last problem you'll ever notice.

It seems like an incredibly petty thing to be upset about.
Everyone started out rough in this game, if people would live after this mindset the servers would die when old players started getting bored. Everyone has to start at the shitler level mind you.

there's always one bruce "so robust i shit toolboxes" willis assistant who kills the entire syndicate force with a bomb he made from objects in the break room and an emitter which he tore out of the floor with his hands
never underestimate a greyshirter

I can understand why you feel this way, and I mostly agree with what you're saying. However, your reasoning and the solutions you present don't really work.
Every server, from Goon to Citadel to /vg/station, needs a fresh influx of new players. Slapping a big fat password on the server would effectively kill the server, because there'd be few to no new players coming in. However, that doesn't mean that a huge amount of new players is inherently a good thing. A tide of newbies does nothing but overwhelm the older players (who would otherwise most likely embrace them), strain the server's resources, and change the community -- either to something fitting the new players (i.e. many more memes and shenanigans) or something that actively hurts new players. That's the entire reason why people refer to Eternal September as a thing.
This problem has already sorted itself out, really. /vg/station's population has sunk back to manageable levels, and the new players have already either moved on to the next game or settled in to their own servers.
I'd say that this whole thing was handled about as well as it could have been, really. Does that mean that it was fun to be on the server while this shit was happening? Not really. Does that mean that it's stupid and petty to worry about this kind of stuff? Heck no.
[sp]The real tragedy is that the general on /vg/ is now (even more) infested with waifushit, but that's probably unrelated. God, I hope it's unrelated.[/sp]
Will he do a review about Lifeweb.
