Had lots of fun seshing this dude's steep ass fucking driveway. It's literally almost 90 degrees, I don't know how he pulls into it. But I skated it like a bank and did a boneless 180 revert and it was tight. Then I found a sign about as high as my neck and tried to do a caveman 180 off of it and onto the sidewalk. The closest I got was landing it and sliding out, but I still had fun and made some friends.
Sign I'm talking about:

I remember the old longboarding thread, went looking for it the other day but realised it had been locked...
Anyway, I originally bought a cheap shitty skateboard from Argos years ago but could barely use it because of its shittness. From that I decided to dive in and around 3 years ago me and a few friends all bought longboards to use (more inclined to go out if others are doing it too kinda thing), and I bought myself a Mindless Maverick - must have been about £100, can't remember exactly.
The only problem is that long boarding in England isn't the easiest thing considering the amount of hills pretty much everywhere, and where I only really use it in summer I still don't feel greatly comfortable bombing down them when there may be cars appearing out of side roads.
I didn't actually use it much during my second year unfortunately, but I went out and bought some new shoes and a skate tool to make sure everything was still working a few months ago so I now go out on it every now and again, especially if it's a warm sunny day and I just feel like cruising.
Tl;Dr; Longboards are fun in summer :v:
Cruising is great, especially when it's super warm and you just get a breeze on your face
I ollied over a skateboard on it's side today, yaaay

I think I'm going to buy my friends old 8.125 unanbomber deck, I'm sick of my pencil thin current one

First post.
Finally I have more motivation to skateboard.I haven't skateboarded since go skate day. My setup is
Real skateboard 8.0
Independent trucks
Bones reds
Street formula bones
Grizzly grip
I tried skateboarding once.
Fell over a lot, twisted ankles and wrists - had a goofy stance so I suppose that didn't help.
I then snapped my board by fucking up an ollie and for some reason landing in the middle of the board with my feet together - I don't know either.
I then tried out Powerisers and was the first person on the Pro-Jump (Sellers) forum to ever break a leg (Besides the guy who tried to jump across an alleyway and ended up hitting the upper side of a truck cab)
Yup, sports isn't for me.
With skateboarding you're always gonna get injuries, you just need to keep getting up and trying again
i get upset because i really want to go to the park almost every night (mostly because the weather is really nice lately) but i know i have to take a break every once and a while otherwise i spend 90% of my time just rubbing my legs in pain trying to build up the energy to try something again lol

also does anyone have tips for getting your kickflips nice and clean? in a game of skate, playing on flat i can land a kickflip but its mostly just me awkwardly twisting the board and landing on it right as it hits the ground. ive been trying to bring the board up with me so that i can catch it midair and kickflip over/out of things but idk i figure you nerds might have tips on how to bring your board up with you when kickflipping
I've never broken a board before it seems really hard to do even with cheap walmart boards. I have skated for 3 years on and off and I can ollie, 180 ollie, nollie, heelflip, and 180 + 360 shuv it. My town sucks because it's just bumpy flat roads that haven't been paved in 15 years.

I did until my board snapped - couldn't be assed buying a new one.

I don't live in a town.
However I'm moving to Glasgow within the week.
I may try and get myself fit again and delve back into skateboarding.
Longboarding is fun, but all you gotta do is stand on a board. I prefer to skate because it gives you satisfaction because you know you're getting better and can do things you never did before. I'll never forget my first kickflip.
This is actually pretty far from true, longboarding has a bunch of static tricks like side switching, riding backwards, handstands, the angel of death etc. that you can integrate into more dynamic stuff like sliding tricks. I've seen a ton of extremely skilled longboarders who can do some insane stuff with a pair of slide gloves.
You can also ollie on a longboard, depending on its size. I've pretty much mastered it because I got bored of riding generally. It's probably a lot harder on a longboard.
And hey, who said standing on a board isn't fun? Longboarding to me is one of the most viscerally entertaining things if you have a nice slow incline with a smooth road, maybe some people to chill and ride with too. Riding over the same old slopes can get boring, yes, but that's all part of it - finding new places to ride. I've seen a lot more skateboarders get frustrated because they can't do the trick they want.
On the topic of skateboarding though, I want to get into it alongside my longboarding hobby, question for everyone who has a board: What do you recommend spending for your first board?
I want a good quality board that won't snap or warp easily, but I also don't wanna blow loads of cash on a board that's just as good as one for half the price? Thanks.
a bunch of static tricks like side switching, riding backwards, handstands, the angel of death etc.
What the fuck are those? Do you even skate? And riding backwards is called fakie.
Like I said I've never even snapped a walmart board but if your just talking about the board itself at the skateshops I went to good boards are usually $45-$50
What the fuck are those? Do you even skate? And riding backwards is called fakie.
wow lmao no I don't skate the whole thing was an elaborate ruse
And afaik they're pretty much exclusively longboarding tricks, or at least the angel of death is, I don't know many others because I only have a few friends who longboard

Why is longboarding so popular now? Especially in England, it makes me angry. I have no reason to be angry but I'm like "you fake skateboarders *shakes fist angrily" despite it not being that. Penny boarding however, what the fuck

Eh, dunno, it's certainly not popular around where I live, judging by silverfish longboarding forums it's definitely more of a thing further north.
Also, yeah penny boarding is a bit weird to me, especially with size 13 feet, it seems really sketchy.
It's better than all types of boarders get along though, what's the point in arguing over how long your piece of wood with wheels is, right? :v:
Pisses me off when people regard longboarding as 'fake' skateboarding though because they fail to realise they're different things for different people and it has a different culture completely.
I skateboard and I love it but I also like longboarding I just haven't gotten into it because I dont have a lot of money to spend on it and when I do I get skateboard stuff instead. I don't get all this hate between longboard vs skateboard they are for different environments. I want to get a penny board too those are so cool I want to get the nickle board because it's bigger though.

idk what its like in england but in america ive seen longboards get super popular recently mostly because it seems like a way for sheltered wealthy kids to feel like a part of the "urban skateboarding culture" without ever getting knocked out at a skatepark or spending a day riding around the city
[editline]28th August 2013[/editline]
not like i ahve a problem with longboarding and i realize it can take a lot of skill to do like, actual longboarding, not just riding it along the sidewalk to high school or whatever but yeah around here it seems like a lot of kids go buy longboards and try to use it as a little badge to put on their personality
Picked up skating about 3 months ago, I can't really do much, apart from messily attempt ollies and shuvits, but I'm still learning.
Here's my deck when I got it new: http://instagram.com/p/aJFHywFufX/#
Palace x Danny Brady deck (7.75in)
Thunder Polished Low Trucks
Independent ABEC 7 Bearings
Spitfire Cheapshots 53mm Wheels
Grizzly Griptape
Independent Bolts
Came to about £135, not too bad for decent hardware.
My area kinda sucks for skating though, the little amount of "skate parks" are really just built for BMX and shit like that, and are filled with assholes. I miss New York, everywhere is a skate park in New York :(
What the fuck are those? Do you even skate? And riding backwards is called fakie.
There are many legit tricks that can be done on longboards, like kick flips and varials. If you ever see someone do them on a longboard you'll have a new respect for longboarding.
I started skating a few months ago, i'm having a lot of fun taking my board to places where my friends who know a lot more about skating can show me stuff!
the siknastytriqz I can do
ollie, fakie ollie
fs shuvit, bs shuvit, fakie for both
fs 180, bs 180, fakie for both
manual for days
I can get the rotations for kick and heelflips, but I can't seem to land on the board.
8.25 Element
Independent trucks
Reds bearings
Blank (shop) wheels I scratched the logos off of.
from when I first bought it
Do not get a penny board.
Why? I rode both a penny board and a nickle pennyboard they're fun.
My collection so far - only one skateboard amongst them, but I plan on getting a more standard sized skate deck to bridge the gap between 'travel size' and longboard.

This is my board. It gets way better in the sun because it has paint that turns black in the sun and says funny stuff.

Yeah I know, I'm one of those people, but none of those tricks even exist.
Old yellow-ish wheels you've had forever are the best wheels
until you flatspot them and your whole life is ruined for the day
One of my wheels isn't spinning as it should. I want to take apart the bearing but I don't have any lube . Does anyone know of cheap good silicon based lube for bearings. Also I put my board together but I've never lubed a bearing is it as simple as just taking the shield off?
Yeah, just take the shield off and lube it. Either go to the skate shop and buy some lube for like, a dollar, or use sewing machine oil, silicone oil or some other machine oil. Don't use cooking oil or WD40 tho because you'll wreck your bearings.
Sometimes I lube my washers or get new washers. I think washers r gr8
