Graduating college in May, have sent out about 40 applications this past week When would you expect to hear back, closer to graduation?
Jesus christ, first job application led to an interview, first interview led to a job offer within the hour. I don't even know what to think, I knew I was doing well in the interview, but it went so smoothly I kind of forgot it was an interview, it devolved into more of a conversation on the topic and everything related to it. I am kind of in shock?
I have so many part time jobs related to media, I always get random calls from people who need my help. Doesn't matter if it's in the middle of the night. Yes, a very unbalanced and though work schedule, but I get payed enough. I've never been in a job interview before.
update on this: found an apartment. Perfect place, was able to get a private lease with someone for an amazing price. Have been moved in for about 2 weeks now, and I can say that living on my own for the first time is fucking weird. But I love it a lot. The freedom is great, and I think I'll be able to adjust to budgeting rather ok.
new update- thank god my now ex-gf isn't on the lease.
I sense a story coming up.
Does anyone have a plan that'll 100% work for future retirement by investing in Mutual funds/bonds?
a tip if you have a gf do not have her on the lease, if you do break up with and she on the lease and she moves out then you have to move out. I think its for us residents, idk about the rest of the world
So what do I do when my family is trying to screw me over? I have a Job but no car/drivers license and they're trying to throw me out from the looks of things. They're blaming me for causing their problems because I had dishes in my bedroom that I didn't tell them about. I've cleaned them out and they still outright refuse to talk to me, as if I destroyed something expensive. More background, My Dad also accused me of assault for holding him back when he was really freaking POed at me. As in, trying to charge into my bedroom and ransack it. He went and took pictures of his 'injuries' and said he had evidence in case he wanted to prosecute. He is also in denial about comments he made to me over the past 2 days. As in, calling me stupid and drunk while I was practicing driving and he was going "Stop" every 10 feet because he wanted to look at random things. Outright accusing me of lying about it now. I'm also being accused of theft of I dont know what. He smokes marijuana and I'm assuming that's what he is talking about since I do smoke. But I do not go as low as stealing from anyone. (He found a bowl in my room about a week ago. But didnt do any of this when he found it.) It's really affecting my work performance since he was going to give me the car I was practicing in. It's a constant struggle just to do anything. I'm stuck in such a rut and no matter what I do I can't get out. It's freaking me out and driving me to have panic attacks and crap. I literally feel like death whenever anything happens now. What can I do to turn this around at all?
It sounds like the only thing you can do is find a friend who can let you crash at their place, because imo your dad seems too far gone. What is the public transportation like in your area? How much in your savings do you have available? If your commute is not too far invest in an electric bike provided you can afford one in your budget. You're in a tough situation man, one I haven't been in and can't imagine being in. -- I'm still waiting on my loan request for my first semester of college in the spring. After two years since I graduated from HS and a lot of self discovery or rather rediscovery I know what I want to do. Two weeks since I sent in the loan request with my campus office, asked a friend and she said it typically takes one to two weeks for it to go through so I picked the perfect timing I guess in the last half of November. :v:

So unless your girlfriend is in high school that won't fly. But if you're already cool with breaking the rules, you could just stay there after she leaves. Nobody would know. It's just a technicality. They just want to know the total income of every adult living there so they know they're making money.

You say he has a girlfriend, what is she like? How long have they been together? People can change because of outside influence. I suspect she could have a hand in how he is thinking if he locks himself in his room with her all day. Women can be very manipulative. The car insurance, I'm in the same boat. I pay my car insurance but the car remains under my dads name. Use that as a bargaining chip if possible, what is his income like? Does he have the budget to pay the insurance on top of his current bills and financial obligations? Exploit that for as long as possible while you work at a license or some other form of transportation. Your father seems like he is in some kind of stressed situation, what is the conditions like in your household? If he is stressed his girlfriend could be negatively influencing him. Or perhaps he is going through something worse.
Anyone have any experience getting scholarships and such for technical schools in the us? Currently a highschool junior and starting to worry about not having my whole life planned out.
I know I'm a bit late on this here, but don't worry. I'm a college freshman, and trust me, you don't need to plan out the rest of your life while still a Junior. Now, depending on your state, there may or may not be state-funded academic scholarships available for use at 4-year or 2-year schools (technical schools) that you could shoot for, but just as well it doesn't hurt to apply for scholarships from organizations and individuals outside of those. Some may be more difficult than others (as some that provide larger scholarship amounts often are more competitive and have more intensive application processes), but others are often as simple as submitting an essay for a contest or simply sending in a short application letter. I got a $1000 (+$500 for my high school) scholarship from the local chapter of a nuclear advocacy group my senior year of high school for simply sending in an essay in a contest, and as a result that's $1000 I don't have to cover with other scholarships or out of pocket. So while yes, don't fret too much at this point, make sure to do your research ahead of time, and apply early and often. You may not get all that you apply to, but if your grades are good and you put in the time to apply, you're likely to get at least one, if not more.
What criteria are good for appraising universities? As of right now, I'm just doing local community college because it was a very cheap and local way to get my associates done, and I've known a lot of people who went through it and it worked out great. But now my family is considering a move to South Dakota, and I was even told that if I were to go there after finishing community college we'd essentially leave immediately after I get my associates. There's plenty of schools that offer what I'm interested (likely comp sci, linguistics, or perhaps economics. I'm working that out still) but I'm not entirely sure what to look for to decide if a school is good. Obviously there'll be a lot less choice up there than here, in dallas-fort worth texas. Assume money and financial aid are irrelevant.
God forbid, I hope my gf doesn't get on a lease and take my house.
Lads, i'm stuck in a rut. Me:20,"fulltime" job, work for an airline at the airport, okay pay, but not even close enough to move out of parents house. I'm hard working, interview well, take to anything very quickly, never planned on working in the airline industry. Basically no progression path at current job, where do i go now? I have management experience, love writing (no portfolio of work though), love making videos (youtube) love interacting with people, love doing voice acting and voice over(small portfolio #read 1 job), entrepreneurial mindset. I just have no idea what to do next, what can I do?
I hope to be ready to pick up my first rental property this time next year! Couldn't happen at a better time, either. We're on the brink of another massive housing market decline, so suitable investment properties will be in high supply, at very low prices. Great deals abound for the savvy shopper.
Why are you not libertarian?
This thread isn't really appropriate for that tbh tho ill respond and hopefully not get guillotined. But a huge amount of really savvy capitalists still wind up fairly liberal or mainstream conservative for long-term reasons regarding society. Giving up a little bit of your money to keep the machine going basically. I mean voting Trump would be in my rational immediate self-interest over Clinton but I didn't.
Why are you not libertarian?
A lot of libertarian concepts are generally agreeable, but the actual party platform and their representatives are totally ridiculous. Usually safer to just say you're socially liberal and fiscally conservative and leave it at that.
Why are you not libertarian?
Well, I find Libertarian ideology economically nonviable and generally flawed. Plus, it tends to come as a package deal with some proper loons as far as the politicians representing it go. That said, I'm not the harbdoiled radical leftist so many people on here seem to think I am. I may be very socially progressive, and that tends to dominate the bulk of conversation here on Facepunch, but I tend to be fairly centrist with economic and foreign policy. With a few exceptions, of course.
The way I present myself is pretty weird, being a full "seize the means of production" type libertarian socialist, but I mostly post and talk from a social democratic FDR/McGovern lens. I dunno I guess since I have to live in this society practicality makes me keep things palatable for most people. "The rich should pay slightly more taxes" is much easier to sell than "you should own your own workplace." (even if ronald reagan hilariously supported that while condemning socialism) so I've got the opposite issue
BDA, for your investment property keep in mind interest rates are likely to increase soon, the bond market has been going down recently
BDA, for your investment property keep in mind interest rates are likely to increase soon, the bond market has been going down recently
I actually wrote an article about that earlier today. Interest rates are already on the rise. Nationally, the average thirty year fixed rate has increased by half a percentage point in the last three weeks. Doesn't sound like much, but that effectively translates into a 5% decrease in buying power for current homebuyers, and that figure is showing no signs of slowing down. We will see rates continue to increase for a while, before eventually leveling off. We probably won't see rates as low as we have been enjoying for the past few years again for quite some time, unfortunately. :( However, we are on the brink of a major national shift in the housing market. All signs are pointing to a transition into another housing downturn, not unlike what we saw in 2008. We can expect 4-5 years of consistent housing decline. Even with higher mortgage interest rates, there will be an abundance of great investment opportunities for those willing to seek them out.
How long do you think it will be for the downturn to happen? From the vague economics stuff I know it could pretty much kick off at any time at this point, as there already many warning signs that presented themselves for 08. Which is a shame as things have been pretty good, family's home has already seen the value climb quite nicely in just a few years of ownership.

Which is a shame as things have been pretty good, family's home has already seen the value climb quite nicely in just a few years of ownership.
Technically, it could be said that it's already happening. Luxury markets have already begun declining in most areas. It's hard to say exactly when the ceiling will drop enough to affect average home in the average market, but the general estimate is within 3-6 months. It's hard to get much more specific than that, however. There are a lot of factors that could speed that up, or delay it. It's also hard to put your finger on the exact moment when things "officially" turn, as it is a gradual, wide-reaching process. The national housing market is composed of thousands of local markets, and they are all relatively independent of one another. Some markets will decline much sooner and much more quickly than others. Others may not decline at all. Only thing that's relatively certain is that it is coming. The pieces have been lining themselves up for years now. Property values have inflated faster than income, while the rate of homeowners has been steadily declining. Inventory growth is already slowing down, and rising mortgage rates are causing a decrease in buyer interest. There's just not enough momentum to keep up at this pace. We've reached an unsustainable peak. Interestingly, the decline in the rate of homeownership does not seem to be directly linked to property values, as the trend has proven true even in markets that have seen property value declines or slower growth than the national averages. If that is maintained even through the shift, it could have serious long-term implications.
We've reached an unsustainable peak.
If it leads to another economic downturn, prepare for society to become more radicalized. I think prepping might be a something to take seriously at the moment.

And historically, America has been very good at shrugging away radicalism for economic crises.
What are the best sites for comparing colleges, specifically based on their academic merit? I've applied to a few different schools based on recommendation from counselors and personal interest, and now I'm trying to figure out which I'll actually enroll into. Specifically, any thoughts on University of Texas-Dallas v.s. Southeast Missouri State University? I've been guaranteed a full-ride scholarship for the latter, and a partial for the former. Planning to major in CompSci/Cybersecurity.

Your academic and professional achievement will always matter more than your alma mater, no matter what you do. To answer your question, I found the forums at College Confidential to be extremely helpful. [editline]2nd December 2016[/editline] I'm serious, though. If you can graduate with a bachelor's degree and positive net worth, you are already more than a decade ahead of your peers. Go to Missouri, get a part-time job, and put whatever you can into a growth-oriented investment account. Take advantage of your low-risk situation. On that subject, a question for the financially-minded: what are your opinions on investing in leveraged ETFs? I'm prohibited from working with them at all by my current advisor and my workplace, but I'm considering switching when I leave in a few months to go in on these products.
So I'm thinking about pushing my holiday bonus into a share of Tesla, perhaps grabbing a couple more over the next month or two. Just getting interested in investment and I really believe that by 2020 and the finalization of the gigafactory would give me a solid return in my investment. Any opposition to the idea? Really interested in your guys's viewpoints. On a side note, any up and comers that might be interesting to put money into? I'd like to establish a diverse portfolio in the event that my primary investment tanks.
Trying to find a job lately has been pretty difficult. Not sure if it's simply because of how picky I've become of a job or just my resume. I've gotten only gotten 2 interviews so far from the 30 applications I've submitted in the area. I'm starting to feel like I'm running out of places to apply to. Any suggestions or something?

You'd be surprised what kind of opportunities open up when you cast your net a little wider around areas you aren't familiar with. I made a living digging graves for seven years before leaping into audits at a broker dealer halfway across the state. Just don't give up.
