tl;dr pinkamena is the depressed/insane version of pinkie, not much else to say. Check the mini storyline in the link I posted, that guy actually put some thought into developing the character instead of just going KILLKILLKILL. The artist is [url=http://crookedtrees.deviantart.com/gallery/?catpath=/]Crookedtrees[/url], who's a cool guy to talk to as an artist, but he's one of those wonky people that draws r34. Having said that, he knows how to keep his non-r34 stuff completely separated from his r34 most of the time.

I'm perfectly OK about people watching the show and generally enjoying it. But when people make mods involving ponies for games such as Skyrim and fantasize about fucking one of them, my stomach turns. I know it's a show for 8 year old girls, but i was watching Power Puff Girls up until i was 14.
EDIT: I used to watch cartoons, but when i turned 14, i just stopped watching them and lost interest. I still go for nostalgia from a few episodes of EE&E on youtube, but the fact that i've lost interest is both good and bad, Chowder is a shitty show, but Regular Show looks good.

I agree. The animation is very comforting, and fluid. AND reminds you that, hey, it's a cartoon.
If you've seen their other animated series, Wacky Video Game Jokes 4 Kidz, it's got human characters, but small kinks to remind you that what you're watching is a cartoon. And not a cartoon trying to be a drama.
Really these guys know how to make good, solid characters, and the pacing of that webseries flows just well.
But I'm not really liking these MLP vids in terms of humor. While still entertaining, I just don't find a lot of it to be funny. Guess it ain't my type of humor.

alright, here's the mini spiel:
marketed toward young kids, yes, though the design team actually pushed their boundaries a bit, and put out a pilot that wasn't all tea parties and rainbows, setting the tone for the rest of the series.
The reason all the older people get into it is the nostalgia factor of several things. the animation is well done and stylized, very reminiscent of the character designer's older works which we all remember well enough. Members of the animation/design team have collectively worked on the iron giant, samurai jack, dexter's lab, powerpuff girls, foster's home for imaginary friends, and more.
it is [i]literally[/i] the amalgamation of cartoon network's golden years.
As for actual story and stuff, yes it's still played out with a young audience in mind, but part of that boundary pushing is what Lauren Faust specifically wanted. She said it'd suck, as a young parent/babysitter/older sibling to have to sit with a younger kid and watch the kind of mindless girly TV everyone expects, so she puts in huge pop culture references, draws out a deeper layer to character development and stories (like with pinkie's thin mental boundary that can burst and send her into manic depression), and makes it genuinely entertaining to that demographic as well.
Granted most new cartoons now are literally mindless garbage, it wouldn't be hard to stand above the crowd, but if [i]any[/i] shows today did half as well as MLP did at actually bringing content on this level instead of just providing slapstick jokes and retarded acting for 20 minutes, it'd still blow all the other programming on cartoon network clean out of the water.
The best example of terrible shows in this day and age (which TH89 has also pointed out) would be Johnny Test, if you ask me. it's just a genderswapped dexter's lab without the good writing, and a whole bunch of additions that were probably voted in by a committee.

There are only a few good children's cartoons on basic cable.
It's gotten so bad cartoon network is starting to fill up with live action shows. Destroy Build Destroy, Dude, What Would Happen, etc. All unbelievably terrible.
