[t]https://i.imgur.com/fc7x9Wy.jpg[/t] My favorite wood SCR
that look almost exactly like those FN rifles that came sometime before the FAL.
I'm thinking of getting something I can hunt with. Should I buy a bolt/hunting rifle or just get another upper for my AR15 that shoots something like .300BLK or something to that extent? I was looking at some of the types of uppers and bullets you can stick in the AR15 platform (for science and fun) and I have to say the most entertaining ones from the looks of it has to be either 50 beowulf or 458 SOCOM, I mean both of those ammo types are stupidly expensive but whatever you shoot definitely isn't getting back up after you shoot it. Saw a video of a guy shooting a deer with 458 and the poor thing did 3 barrel rolls after he shot it.
Dont bother with 300blk unless youre gonna supress it.
Agreed. I like the round, but it's really only worth it with the can.
that look almost exactly like those FN rifles that came sometime before the FAL.
The SAFN-49?
Dont bother with 300blk unless youre gonna supress it.
That's my endgame for mine. 9" with a can
Wow, that's actually a really good deal
Fuck if I wasn't living at school and had a place for it and the money I'd buy that in a heartbeat.
I don't hunt so it may or may not be relevant: But isn't .300memeout supposed to be a better round for brush-hunting and the like when weighed against .223, yet still more affordable than more specialty rounds get? I eavesdropped on a couple guys at my local gunstore talking about it in that way, and I think maybe TFB? Seems like it'd be convenient in a few ways. So if that is what someone is interested in as opposed to shooting at targets, I could see why they might nab it, suppressed or no.

So I just got orders to Alaska, so pumped to shoot some moose and bear. I doubt 8mm would be good for Alaska, so should I get .338 Win Mag, .338 Lapua or 300 Win Mag?

After over a year of daily carry I decided to splurge on some stuff for my Glock 26. Ended up going on a ordering frenzy and got the extended mag release and slide lock, a set of the rubberized Talon grips after shooting a 26 with them. Ordered a set of the Trijicon HD night sights in green.I also picked up the ClipDraw and a Kydex trigger guard cover to test this season as it's getting warmer and IWB appendix with my normal kydex in jeans and tshirt isn't the most comfortable. Initial testing of the Clipdraw has proven fantastic, it slims the pistol down so much it doesn't print through my Levi 511's and a normal t-shirt. I also ordered a sheet of the same 3M rubber used on the Talon grips to cut some bits to put onto the clipdraw itself, as I found if my hands were soaking wet and I needed to rack the slide it was a bit slippery. So it'll be interesting to see how that goes.

But, my dad has used his .30-06 on two different caribou trips in Canada, too, which is a derivation of the 8mm. So, honestly, it would probably work okay, too. What's the honest liklihood you'll have a shot over 300 yards which the 8mm is quite capable of shooting?
.303 out of any Enfield with 200gr Speer bullets will take a bear and kicks like a pup.
Yeah, a 30-06 should kill bear or moose just fine, provided a decent load. I couldn't tell you what exactly you'd want, I'm not a hunter. As far as projectiles go though, I've heard good things about Sierra MatchKings.
I've sworn by Remington Core-lokt for my .30-06 and .308 for as long as I've hunted. I've killed five deer with 6 shots total out of both of my rifles using that ammo. .300 win mag really isn't much worse than .30-06 or 8mm though. At least if you use a regular hunting rifle with a normal weight to it from wooden furniture.

Go with a 30-06. It's one of the most versatile rounds in North America since it's had various loads developed for it through years. A hot loaded 30-06 with a heavy bullet is considered the lowest acceptable round for dangerous game like Brown bear and Grizzly bear and you can go lighter for deer.
matchkings and other competition HPBT aren't near the same as hunting HPBTs. they don't expand in the same way, as the HP in the match ones are made for better aerodynamic attributes, not expansion. gamekings are a better alternative then :) [editline]26th February 2017[/editline] so to put it in a perspective, a sierra matchking will be closer to a regular fmj than a sierra gameking in performance in meat/bones
Okay, gotcha. Like I said, I'm not a hunter. As you've probably noticed, I've got huge knowledge gaps in quite a few areas, and some of my knowledge is inaccurate. I've been a gun owner for less than a year, so I'm still learning.
Nah. He reserves that opinion for me. :v:

Not to change the conversation quickly, but I'm looking to buy a galil. Is there a better rifle?
Thanks for all the advice guys Well if I just keep using 8mm, it's coming out of a 1943 German K98 that's in good condition. But for hunting i would like a scope. So so I buy some reproduction WW2 era scope and put it on or do I buy a new modern rifle entirely with a modern scope? I think using old war guns is cool but I would like practicality on this one. But if I can avoid buying a new $600 rifle, I'd like that too.
Ultimately, it's up to you. Do you have any other rifles that would be suitable for hunting beyond your K98?
sure, original valmets/sakos are the best AK patterns around. but galils are 2nd best ;)
Well a galil in the US is like $800 (unless you want an overpriced new one), and a valmet is about tripple that cost. Buy the Zion rifle.

Can you mount it without an expensive mount or without taking it to a gunsmith?
