Finally, all my parts arrived for my new build.
If you are in the US, you should pretty much only be buying from the CMP when they are in stock. They sell good condition Garands for ~$700 or an overhauled one with a new walnut stock and Criterion barrel for ~$1000. I absolutely love mine.
For all the trouble and wait time on CMP guns I think I'd rather spend the extra money on a gun I can inspect in person before purchasing and receive immediately.
Here are some M16A1 surplus parts for you retro builders, on sale for $249.99: http://shop.tropgun.com/product.military-surplus-m16-a1-parts-kit-2407
That's not a bug out. It's just what I haul up the mountain so I can pretend to be a Green Beret while I shoot paper targets and if I accidentally shoot myself I have something to stuff the hole. I have a stocked trauma kit and a mounted fire extinguisher in my truck too. But I do carry a firearm everywhere I go anyway so I usually have that EDC kit pictured in my pocket. Again to treat a gun shot wound either self inflicted by my own folly or inflicted by me by their own folly if you get my drift. Also I keep an MRE and some water bottles and shit behind the seat. Buffalo chicken circa 2009 a classic. But I don't really have a bug-out kit or anything. Mostly due to lack of funds to pour a hundred dollars into something that will sit in the back seat for years.
My range bag is my hunting bag. So I generally keep a can of ammo, a day's lunch, a small first aid kit, a pair of channellocks, a multi tool, a knife sharpener, and a fixed bladed knife. I don't wear pouches or anything tacticool beyond just grabbing a standard coyote 5.11 bag. Along side it I keep a pair of ear phones in my trunk for when I plink, but nothing much more.
Just got my first semi-auto, an NPAP (AKM variant). I love it except for how it keeps jolting my earpro due to the cheek comb.
Guess what showed up in the mail today? [t]http://i.imgur.com/ig5JIRR.jpg[/t] [t]http://i.imgur.com/QjJxcjc.jpg[/t] Guess what didn't show up with it? Literally any paperwork, which means that if the store I got it from can't send me the transfer notice over the weekend I undoubtedly can't shoot this on Monday.
Nice. I'd go for the Stainless version, but the blued looks pretty good. Switch out the ugly hogue grip with a nice wood grip and it will be stylin'.
That's the plan, but all the wood grips I can find cost like $100.

Anybody know of electronic/noise canceling earplugs? Only pair I can find are these and they're pretty expensive. I hate shooting with earmuffs because they ruin my cheek weld, but plugs are irritating to use on indoor ranges because you won't be able to hear shit for the entire session since you can't just take them out briefly to talk. These look like the best of both worlds.
I use Howard Leights, but yeah, getting a good cheekweld with them is a pain in the butt. I'd like electronic ear plugs, but with tech, smaller = pricier.
but plugs
My friend I go to the range with uses these: https://www.amazon.com/Etymotic-Research-GunSport-High-Definition-Electronic/dp/B00J5P8OGS He swears by them, though I can't say personally. I've always used muffs.
msa sordin supreme pro-x are pretty low profile? i use those with 3m clearEARs behind them. really hope you guys don't go shooting indoors or under roof with mosins or shotguns or .357s using only plugs
How come? Can't hear shit through them indoors or out. I always use muffs regardless since I dont get cheek weld issues with them but still.
I ruined my lower today. :(
I ruined my lower today. :(
How did you manage this feat?
Jesus I could get a new gun for the price of the electronics you guys are linking. Mine were like $40.
Jesus I could get a new gun for the price of the electronics you guys are linking. Mine were like $40.
That's the big put-off for me. If I was dropping $200, I'd go pick up the Mossberg Cruiser at my LGS, have a new toy, and continue to deal with non-electronic muffs. :v:
I ruined my lower today. :(

How did you manage this feat?
heres my guess [t]http://i764.photobucket.com/albums/xx282/jaston87/Guns/LMTlowerbrokenear1.jpg[/t]
The fact that some lowers don't have an integrated trigger guard is retarded to me.
$350 for a A1 upper assembly minus bolt carrier sound reasonable? I never buy things like this online so I wouldn't even know. It sounds good to me but I'm used to paying +$150/$200 more for anything I buy at the store.
I'm milling out a lower. And when I was finishing up, I noticed that there was a hole next to the trigger hole. I don't remember accidentally milling it out. So right now it's just a paperweight.
can you guys help me out? i know basically nothing about guns and i need the advice of people who do. my dog was really interested in this mound of dead bamboo, and she has never done that before. she was trying to dig something up (probably some kind of animal), and i saw what looked like a pill bottle fly out. she had no interest in it but i sure did--it was full of bullets. the guy who lived in this house before us was apparently mentally ill. he yelled a lot and would shoot flaming arrows off of the porch, i think he had drug problems too. he used guns pretty regularly. i found an empty container for shotgun shells in my closet when we first moved in, and some kind of drug pipe, but we never found anything else until now. here is an album with more pictures: http://m.imgur.com/a/3wXq1 are these more shotgun shells? is it likely that there's more under there? is this a common thing or a crazy person thing? how likely is it that there are secret skeletons or something buried underground? also my dad is convinced that these will somehow explode if we aren't careful, is this possible? the warping is probably from them being burned (we burned the bamboo a little bit to help kill it). would they not have exploded then, if they even could?

Those look like full steel casings of some kind. Probably pistol cartridges, but it's hard to tell since the photo is zoomed in all the way in. Try pulling one or two out and photographing them, with something for scale. I very much doubt they'll go off, especially if the fire didn't cook them off. I wouldn't want to put them in a firearm, but they shouldn't go off.
my dad took them and is speeding off to some ammunition disposal place. he insisted that we had to get rid of them ASAP, even after he called the cops and they told him it wasn't a big deal
Yeah, he didn't need to panic. Ammo tends to be pretty stable. It has a shelf life, yeah, but it generally goes inert when it reaches the end of it, rather than becoming unstable like explosives. Besides, even if they did go off, they would basically be a firecrackers, albeit firecrackers that produce some metal fragments. The main reason ammo is deadly in a firearm is because the chamber and bolt face surround the casing, so the only opening for gas escape is through the barrel. In order for the expanding gasses to escape, they push against the rear of the projectile, forcing it down the barrel.
I've shot ammo from the '40s, whatever she shelf life of ammo is, it's really long.
